Options Brian Turner: Playlist from March 27, 2012 Options

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

such a nice start...
  Tue. 3/27/12 3:08pm Cecile:

Brian, you are for such a treat next Tuesday.
Tue. 3/27/12 3:15pm Matt from Springfield:

Unintelligible at any speed alright. I only wish there was more "cowboyness" to that last one...

This one meanwhile sounds like a 90s childhood of video games and commercials.
  Tue. 3/27/12 3:17pm adam:

I didn't hear anything naughty
Tue. 3/27/12 3:18pm Matt from Springfield:

Ken of Newport Rich-tucky?
Mr. Mister and the Bangles!! OMG, clear my schedule!

The "Spirit in the Sky" ref must be Doctor and the Medics '86 version. I once saw that video on TV--damn that was strange.
  Tue. 3/27/12 3:19pm paula pc:

Brian, you don't sound like THIS type of AOR DJ, for what it's worth...
  Tue. 3/27/12 3:19pm still b/p:

More reverb!
Tue. 3/27/12 3:19pm Matt from Springfield:

Some mainstream rock station in '86 I assume.
Ticket call-ins where they broadcast the callers are hilarious!
  Tue. 3/27/12 3:20pm paula pc:

and 96Rock is not zactly AOR

Tue. 3/27/12 3:22pm Matt from Springfield:

Was it Jam Productions who did those high-pitched, very processed radio call letter jingles? In my childhood most radio stations still had those jingles.
  Tue. 3/27/12 3:24pm Slackel:

Lovin' it!!! This is why I listen to WFMU!
  Tue. 3/27/12 3:25pm Carmichael:

Hey BT, Cheri, G, paula pc, b/p, lu and other familiar and unfamiliar commenters!
  Tue. 3/27/12 3:32pm Cheri Pi:

Weird day, there was a shooting near our workplace, a woman took 3 bullets walking intothe local hospital. other than that; saw Jucifer last night, they were loud.
Tue. 3/27/12 3:32pm Dan from Toronto:

Lyrics for that Omega song we just heard, with the umlauts: http://www.gammapolis.de/cgi-bin/webcon.cgi?S=Song&Nr=404

  Tue. 3/27/12 3:35pm Real Women:

Mount Carmel hasn't looked very hard, that's all.
Tue. 3/27/12 3:37pm Matt from Springfield:

@Cheri: Man, what doesn't happen in Cinci? Lots of screwed up stuff seems to happen there.
  Tue. 3/27/12 3:37pm Cheri Pi:

They were amazing-Amber Valentine was totally channeling her inner Runhild Gammelsæter.

  Tue. 3/27/12 3:39pm lu:

@Carm -- where is that Häppy Höur? i'm ready!
  Tue. 3/27/12 3:40pm Cheri Pi:

Other Music stated authoritatively that Mount Carmel's latest "sets the new standard for Caucasian electric blues at this time. "
Avatar Tue. 3/27/12 3:42pm BT:

The price of used John Mayall records to go up
  Tue. 3/27/12 3:43pm slugluv1313:

WOW!!!!! LOVE/HATE that "Real Women" song -- such wonderfully/horribly sexist lyrics hahahaha!

Cheri Pi, that is terrible! at least the woman was going into a hospital! glad you are okay

Brian, THANK YOU for OMEGA! never heard of 'em -- being HUNGARIAN, i kinda see it as my *responsibility* to know about such things -- only Hungarian band i recall hearing anything about back then (early to mid-1970s) was Locomotive GT (i think they even showed up on one of those "late night" TV concert shows -- like "In Concert" or "Don Kirschner's Rock Concert"???)
  Tue. 3/27/12 3:43pm lu:

serving Löwenbräu!
  Tue. 3/27/12 3:44pm Cheri Pi:

I really want this new Flying Nun comp.
  Tue. 3/27/12 3:45pm Cecile:

me, too!
  Tue. 3/27/12 3:46pm Carmichael:

@lu: Well, first get on a plane and fly to Sacramento. Then drive to Midtown. Then walk in and order.
Tue. 3/27/12 3:46pm Matt from Springfield:

I need to get that Flying Nun comp too! I have "In Love With These Times" which covers around 1986-88, "Pink Flying Saucers Over The Southern Alps" for 1989-91, so now I need the early early stuff!
Tue. 3/27/12 3:48pm Matt from Springfield:

King Usniewicz & His Usniewicztones -- man, he TOTALLY rules with that name! I bow in his general direction!
Avatar Tue. 3/27/12 3:48pm BT:

Its a pretty solid 2LP comp.
Tue. 3/27/12 3:48pm Matt from Springfield:

King "oo-snezz" it sounded like he said..
  Tue. 3/27/12 3:49pm Carmichael:

This has a certain awful quality that I enjoy.
Tue. 3/27/12 3:50pm Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: I agree, it's probably this wonderfully awful garage sound that early punk channeled.
  Tue. 3/27/12 3:51pm G:

Usniewicztones, a Joe B fave last year. Hard to search for b/c it doesn't always get spelled the same on all playlists, wonder why.
Tue. 3/27/12 3:52pm Matt from Springfield:

@G: There's more Usniewicztones? I gotta check 'em out!!
  Tue. 3/27/12 3:55pm lu:

  Tue. 3/27/12 3:59pm JDELZ:

Is that Ga'an Starchild release available? Can't find anything about it online.
  Tue. 3/27/12 4:01pm Cecile:

I thought feedtime was next week?
  Tue. 3/27/12 4:03pm lu:

oh yeah -- feedtime...
  Tue. 3/27/12 4:04pm Cheri Pi:

I have a concept for a new tv show alled "Crate Daggers" it's the Hillbilly Handfishing of vinyl collecting.
  Tue. 3/27/12 4:04pm Carmichael:

Avatar Tue. 3/27/12 4:04pm BT:

Duh yes, sorry, Feedtime and Twerps next week, Jandek the week after!
Tue. 3/27/12 4:04pm Matt from Springfield:

WFMU consistently proves that there's nothing about found recordings you need to avoid.
Avatar Tue. 3/27/12 4:04pm BT:

  Tue. 3/27/12 4:06pm Cecile:

And, BTW BT, feedtime were amazing on Saturday.
  Tue. 3/27/12 4:07pm JDELZ:

Thanks lu. Looks like the release is NAAM, not Ga'an. Typo on the playlist? I didn't catch the beginning of the show.
  Tue. 3/27/12 4:07pm Cheri Pi:

Cecile-did the singer's voice get impossibly more raspy with age?
  Tue. 3/27/12 4:08pm Cheri Pi:

I hate this song.
  Tue. 3/27/12 4:08pm still b/p:

Local oldies DJ/shop owner donated 3000 records to thrift shop. If there's much of that load still there, I don't know if I have the requisite mojo-gogo for a paw-through session..
  Tue. 3/27/12 4:08pm lu:

  Tue. 3/27/12 4:09pm Cecile:

there were 2 singers, and both of them were appropriately raspy. Not more raspy - they had taken 20 years or so off. They were ridiculously tight. And the drummer has a tiny drum kit - like Phil Rudd's from AC/DC...
  Tue. 3/27/12 4:11pm Cheri Pi:

On my show we'll be mucking out stables for Mancini lps, fighting over copies of Bongo Madness and rinsing ourselves off in pig troughs; all the while pitting kin against kin.
  Tue. 3/27/12 4:12pm Cheri Pi:

Wow that sounds amazing-I hope I get to see them on this tour.
  Tue. 3/27/12 4:13pm glenn:

Tue. 3/27/12 4:14pm Matt from Springfield:

You say it, sister!
I don't know just what you're saying, but keep saying it!
  Tue. 3/27/12 4:14pm Cecile:

sweetest guys, completely blown away that there were 75-100 people there to see them. And some of them were there purposely, too!
Avatar Tue. 3/27/12 4:18pm BT:

Yes, Na'am...guh
  Tue. 3/27/12 4:18pm Cheri Pi:

Glenn-that guy is so whack! Or is he completely normal-I don't know anymore.
Tue. 3/27/12 4:20pm Matt from Springfield:

"For every sand castle, there is the same size hole in the ground. (Sedition Ensemble, 1981, Numbered Blues)." Pretty progressive, pretty long ago.
This was evidently cited in a paper called "Boyz N The Hood: A Colonial Analysis"...
  Tue. 3/27/12 4:20pm Cecile:

Glenn, I have that Meters record in one of the stills, ha, I paid $3 for it.
Tue. 3/27/12 4:23pm Matt from Springfield:

YES!! Jandek!! The mighty man in person!
  Tue. 3/27/12 4:23pm glenn:

it's a great documentary. alan zweig is truly obsessed.
  Tue. 3/27/12 4:27pm Mike East:

dang, missed Pat Metheny. I've got a pic of his studio setup set as my computer wall paper at home. It's pretty sick.
  Tue. 3/27/12 4:28pm Cecile:

Brian, the first four albums came out on Aberrant in Australia. Suction was the first to come out here on Rough Trade America. Then RT reissued the first three. Then feedtime put out Billy on AmRep in '96.
  Tue. 3/27/12 4:28pm Cheri Pi:

  Tue. 3/27/12 4:29pm andyg:

enjoying the broadcast very much today!
  Tue. 3/27/12 4:35pm glenn:

mike east, have you seen this?
  Tue. 3/27/12 4:36pm Rufus J Squirrel:

Where the hell can I find that Billy Dirt Cult?
  Tue. 3/27/12 4:40pm Carmichael:

Glenn, that's the most bizarre stringed instrument I've ever seen. At least Rick Nielson's guitar strings didn't cross over each other: http://www.guitargallows.com/bios/biophotos/Rick_Nielsen.jpg
  Tue. 3/27/12 4:41pm Mike East:

that's awesome, glenn. Thanks for the link.
  Tue. 3/27/12 4:41pm Cheri Pi:

  Tue. 3/27/12 4:52pm David Shortell:

Peter Wyngarde! I didn't know the star of "Department S" and "Jason King" recorded an album. Originally released by RCA Victor in 1970, I read.
Tue. 3/27/12 5:05pm Matt from Springfield:

Heading off for the Primavera? At least we'll be chock full of live sets before you head out.

Bill Zurat! Is he avail to fill in for you? He was one of my fav fill-ins for you last year!
