Caryn:
Hi all! That "arrested for sleeping at McD" story is making me nervous, since that's probably what I'm gonna be doing this weekend. Going out of town to listen to a concert and need to stay awake through the night at some fast food place until morning, when I can catch my train.
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:12pm
Matt from Springfield:
@Caryn: If it's open all night, and you buy something, they should oblige.

David from Charlotte:
I want to hear the Funky Flea Market show!
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:22pm
Caryn:
Today's music clips clearly have a more funk & soul thing going on.
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:22pm
Matt from Springfield:
Actually contrary to popular beliefs, Union Square has nothing to do with the unions nor The Union during the Civil War--it was formed at the "union" of Broadway and the Bowery: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Square_(New_York_City)
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:22pm
Terry in New Baltimore:
This is some of the best reporting I have heard on the occupy movement - with music too! Keep it up. I wish everyone could hear the voice of "the common man (or woman)" as you are bringing it.
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:23pm
Matt from Springfield:
Now, it just so happens that in the late 19th and early 20th century, the labor union rallies DID in fact assemble in Union Square frequently, but that probably had more to do with location than symbolism.
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:24pm
Matt from Springfield:
And Clay interviews!! Before Occupy most of his interviews in Manhattan seem to have been in and around Union Square.
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:25pm
Terry in New Baltimore:
Matt - is it true that Zuccoti park was originally an Italian menagerie where the animals had to sleep on cots?
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:25pm
Matt from Springfield:
Hi Terry! Clay was on the ground reporting OWS from its earliest days: check out the Archives on the Dusty Show with Clay Pigeon playlists link. And he has a bunch of other awesome shows as well.
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:26pm
Fredericks:
Your Occupy coverage inspired me to visit Occupy Madison. Much quieter than New York. The police are a lot mellower there too.
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:26pm
Matt from Springfield:
@Terry: In response to your question, that's another common misconception. Actually it was where "zucchini" was cooked "hot" and sold to passerby :)
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:27pm
kata:
aw, Clay bedroom tapes, sweet.
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:27pm
Terry in New Baltimore:
I've actually been a fan for years (and a WFMU donor!) - just newly awestruck by the quality of this show
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:28pm
Clay:
Hey. I've had Station Manager Ken and Fabio in here, shootin' the s--t. Good to see you!
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:30pm
Matt from Springfield:
"Work it all out for yourselves" repeatedly, with that 70s funk background!
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:31pm
Matt from Springfield:
Perfect half-hour tape flip, it's been a while. Usually it's been at 45 mins the past few shows.
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:32pm
Caryn:
@Matt: oh if only that was the origin of the name... The actual "named after owners' company director" story is just blah.
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:32pm
listener mark:
We love you Fabio | |
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:32pm

Thu. 3/29/12 6:33pm
Caryn:
@Matt: yes! Even if Fabio tried to say it really quietly.
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:34pm
Predictable Response:
Rick Santorum makes me wanna throw up. ZOMG.
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:35pm
Matt from Springfield:
@Caryn: But sweetly! :)
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:35pm
Clay:
Ken loves you, too. I asked him.
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:37pm
Caryn:
Sheesh, Santorum certainly makes me want to vomit way more than his totally warped JFK quotes do. You'd think he'd try not to badmouth the only Catholic president the US has ever had, but no.
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:39pm
Matt from Springfield:
Did you ask that guy what he believes was done "in the past" by OWS? To ferret out how much of what he heard was rumor and hearsay?

Matt, I handled that interview rather poorly. I don't always have my 'edge', unfortunately. They bested me.

|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:43pm
Matt from Springfield:
@Clay: You still showed a human edge, even to those who scoff at the Occupiers! I only wish you had gone further, but it's hard to think on my feet--I'm envious of your interviewing skill in general.
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:44pm
Clay:
Saw that, Chico. Cool, eh?

Mark G brooklyn:
Clay, your show has been adding an extra new dimension to WFMU over these past months. (Plus the years before, also great.) You have been doing really, really valuable work. I've listened to and supported 'FMU since about 1986. My modest $50 pledge this year was during Dusty. To me, what you've been doing, in focusing on Occupy, is both just so true to the spirit of the station, PLUS it's a very valuable addition to other journalism about OWS (D/N; Colin Moynihan) --SO DON'T STOP
|
Thu. 3/29/12 6:46pm

i read somewhere that joni mitchell was the only white person charles mingus talked to in the last 10 years of his life. i have no way of knowing if it's true or not.

A little silliness to wrap up the comments with! This is a great band! It has the modern "indie" sound but the production is SO incredibly outstanding! And the lyrics and vocal are intriguing. Will def check this band out!

Did you switch from tape to digital recorder during this episode? I like the tape sound, but I imagine digital is easier to edit. Thanks for covering OWS, the revolution will be tape recorded!
