Listener comments!

  Wed. 7/27/11 12:06pm Cecile:

Duane!

The Billy Preston Unsung was amazing. And heartbreaking.
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:06pm Brass Knuckles:

What's the average age of a WFMU DJ? A lot of them have been around for decades.
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:06pm Handsome Harry:

Rad version of "Fool on the Hill."
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:09pm still b/p:

The Conti track was like music for when Rocky tryin' to be smooth and get busy at his pad. Lights low, raw eggs in stemware.
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:09pm BSI:

This version of Fool knocks McCartney's kidneys in the pudding.
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:12pm Sir Paul:

But I wrote the damn song! It wouldn't exist if it weren't for me!
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:12pm Duane:

Cecille: Yeah the BIlly Preston Story was sad. I actually have a friend who has a pretty crazy story about getting hit on by Preston in Central Park in '91..he was 14..Yikes!
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:14pm Cecile:

Wow. Hearing about Billy just makes the story of Sylvester even more amazing.

And man, people forget he had a great run on the charts.

A quick question - does anyone know if Ms. SImone knew of and approved of remixes to her music while she was alive?.
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:20pm Duane:

Cecille: Good question. THere are certainly a ton of SImone remixes out now
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:21pm don:

considering how often she reinterpreted the music of others, i'd assume she's ok with it?
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:23pm Duane:

I would think that the problems would be more on the side of publishing rather than her approval because she did so many cover tunes
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:25pm Cecile:

Can't really find out - Verve remixed came out while she was still alive but she may have been too ill to comment on it.

Half the writers think she would have loved it, others think she would have hated it, which I think is probably the best answer.
Wed. 7/27/11 12:25pm Brian in UK:

Hello all. The most boggling cover that Ms Simone did for me was Jonathan King's 'Everyones Gone to the Moon'.
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:26pm HotRod:

Nice show, Duane.
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:27pm Duane:

Thanks HotRod. Brian in UK; I was always partial to her cover of Hall & Oates "Rich Girl"
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:29pm don:

i'll have to look both those suggestions up! i am continually blown away by her version of "i shall be released"
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:30pm Cecile:

which, even with all the accolades they've gotten, MADE Hall and Oates' lives right there.\

Besides performing with the Temptations...
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:33pm Mike East:

My favorite has always been her cover of "Ain't got no/I got Life" from HAIR.
Wed. 7/27/11 12:34pm Brian in UK:

Cecile, just seen Point Blank (A Bout Portant) action packed does not do it justice. Same title as Lee Marvins. Throughly recommended. The director made the original version of The Next Three Days which hollywood nicked and remade.

Abandonned Luncheonette is a belting album & Daryl Hall's voice on Laughing Boy is great especially live in 1977.
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:36pm Cecile:

Thanks for the tip, Brian!
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:41pm Mike East:

Hey Brian, are you playlist hopping?
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:42pm T-Zero:

This Harlem mix is a great tension builder.
Wed. 7/27/11 12:43pm Brian in UK:

You bet. Following the Station Managers dictum who needs the music.
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:46pm Cecile:

WOW.
Bottega Veneta things are insanely lovely
Yes, there is that whole contrast aspect. :D
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:46pm Mike East:

hehe. Its two amazing shows they put up against each other, so I don't blame you. Each week its been a matter of who I listen to live and who I download later. This week, Duane wins my ears.
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:48pm Um:

Uhh
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:52pm J J:

Monkees song? That movie Head is brilliant in so many ways.
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:54pm Duane:

JJ: Yeah I remeber seeing that on Showtime one night when I was 14!! Pretty trippy!
Wed. 7/27/11 12:55pm Brian in UK:

What do you think Head refers to? It used to be a hippy.
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:59pm Cecile:

For some reason I just thought of Luke Sutherland from Long Fin Killie/Bows. THAT was a unique voice.
  Wed. 7/27/11 12:59pm J J:

I'm surprised Showtime would have shown that. I remember Showtime from my youth as basically being the channel to watch the latest Shannon Tweed or Eric Roberts movie.
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:00pm Duane:

Cecille: Luke was an awesome guy. I met him years ago. Longfin was unreal live!
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:01pm Cecile:

He seems like a supertalented guy. His novel got loads of praise.
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:03pm Duane:

JJ: They used to have a showtime late night movie series called "Showtime Vanguard". They would show Head, Tommy, Clockwork Orange, Iam Curious..this was like around '89. All decent films
Wed. 7/27/11 1:06pm Brian in UK:

There's a huge 6CD comp out recently from Ninja Tunes.
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:09pm J J:

Ahh, Didn't know Showtime did that. Late night, I'm sure.

What happened to that guy? The Long Fin Killie singer? Definitely one of those bands that people should rediscover.
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:10pm Cecile:

he's a writer now. Plays violin with Mogwai from time to time.
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:10pm Handsome Harry:

I have never grooved to America like I am now grooving to America. Groove on.
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:11pm jan:

that's all for America, please. Last night, I heard in a Desert on A horse with no name, and the tune played endlessly in my head.
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:17pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Hello all,
FYI...Great show @ Fort Greene Park ( Bklyn ) last night-Charles Bradley & Menahan Street Band. The sky's even opened up for his encore!
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:21pm Duane:

Kevinfrombayridge: I was on my way to that show and the skies opened up so i had to run home. I'm glad to hear it was a good show!
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:25pm Wild Neil:

Po Polsku!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:30pm Cecile:

hee, my mind is converting this languge into the words they soudn like in English. I just got the phrase "shake your mental ass."
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:31pm Cecile:

Also something about Khruschev and Enjoli.
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:34pm Cecile:

and the chorus here is "baker's dozen."
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:37pm Kedvretel:

Heh, hungarian sweets.
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:37pm Wild Neil:

Cecile-
Moja zona jest polka od Lublin y Podlaskie...czy Pani jest Polka?
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:38pm Cecile:

whuh?
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:41pm Wild Neil:

Never mind, I thought you knew Polish....sorry...
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:41pm Cecile:

No. Did I actually accidentally get a phrase right. A broken clock is right twice a day...
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:41pm Wild Neil:

Duane-
Got any discopolo?
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:42pm Kedvretel:

touring through eastern beards of far continents
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:44pm Duane:

Wild Neil: No didn't bring this week..but love that stuff.
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:46pm Krzy:

Nice polish-hungarian obscurities! Especially polish ones, crazy lyrics and unexpected context, which were placed, its rare to hear it in regular polish radio ;) thanks
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:48pm Duane:

Krzy: You're welcome. Thanx 4 listening!
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:49pm snake:

love the ursula duziak!!!!!
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:50pm Krzy:

yup, thanks a lot! and if you need some hints with translation, let me know, best!
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:56pm Cecile:

Karin Krog, wasn't she married to Archie Shepp?
  Wed. 7/27/11 1:58pm Nathan:

Joe Pass! :)
  Wed. 7/27/11 2:04pm Cecile:

I don't think that's right. I think Hedy Lamarr did nudie stuff in the 20s
  Wed. 7/27/11 2:05pm PMD:

Kielbasa and Pierogi!
  Wed. 7/27/11 2:07pm Krzy:

Sirius was hungarian group. And Jantar passed away in plain crush in 80s I guess..
  Wed. 7/27/11 2:08pm Duane:

Cecile: This is from the wikipedia site on Knef..Marina in Die Sünderin (The Sinner), in which she performed the first nude scene in German film history, in 1950. The nude scene caused one of the largest scandals in German filmmaking history up until that time. When the Roman Catholic Church protested vehemently she responded “I can't understand all that tumult - five years after Auschwitz!”
Krzy: Thanks
  Wed. 7/27/11 2:08pm Cecile:

Hrm. Hedy might have been in Austria. And what a great comeback!
  Wed. 7/27/11 2:09pm Krzy:

and btw. here is good blog for central-european (mostly polish) excavation, partially in english, plenty of good stuff, check it out: http://panmietek.blogspot.com/
  Wed. 7/27/11 2:11pm still b/p:

Hedy's swim and horse-chasing/streaking was in Ekstase, a Czech film in '33.
  Wed. 7/27/11 2:12pm Cecile:

thanks, sbp!
  Wed. 7/27/11 2:30pm Cecile:

Was it Christian Laettner and Danny Ferry? I'd be scared, too.
Wed. 7/27/11 2:34pm evan in montreal:

saw caetano in a soccer stadium in montevideo, uruguay last year. his first gig there in 20 years - sooo awesome.
Wed. 7/27/11 2:38pm José in Southeast Mexico:

No le pegue a la negra! Classic
  Wed. 7/27/11 2:39pm Duane:

Jose: Pour a lil something out for Arroyo today. What a Legend we loss today!
  Wed. 7/27/11 2:43pm vanessa:

en los años mil seis cientos...pouring a lil' aguardiente out for Sr. Arroyo would be most appropriate. RIP Joe Arroyo
  Wed. 7/27/11 2:47pm Handsome Harry:

That Greg Ginn And The Taylor Texas Corrugators tune was the bee's knees.
  Wed. 7/27/11 2:50pm Cecile:

wow, Rah Band vocalist is pretty unexcited. I've seen people happier when they've gotten teeth cleanings.
  Wed. 7/27/11 2:53pm Duane:

Cecille: I like to think of her as a lil robot doll. If your inflatable could sing about her lovemaking experience..that's how it would sound like!!
Wed. 7/27/11 2:56pm Robin The Fog:

Duane, that sounds hot! Think of some more stuff for us to imagine!
  Wed. 7/27/11 3:00pm Wild Neil:

Duane-
Thanks!!
  Thu. 7/28/11 2:06pm hemmel:

After Long Fin Killie, Luke formed BOWS, with a couple singles, 1 ep, and two albums (Blush and Cassidy). Takes the hints of trip-hop/electronic that was in Amelia, and went for it. Features Ruth Emond and Signe (Jomi Massage/Speaker Bite Me) singing (as well as Luke). After that, he was in Music A.M. with two others. Real quiet eletronica with Luke singing and playing guitar. Two albums and one ep there. He's in a band "We Can Love You" with Signe and the drummer from Speaker Bite Me, but there hasn't been much news there. He's also written three novels now. All great stuff.
