Hi Dan! Last week, the listener hour guys were funny and nice and their show had a mind of its own. I heard some cherishable lyrics into one of their songs: "turning water into brine", and I felt at home!

Hi Kat...@Rick, glad they took good care of you guys.

Hey Dan, I just checked by to your playlist from your "sleazy" tribute, and that photo just melted me. Not from knowing him, but from being 12 in '78 and leaving U.K. The world continues to expand. Thanks for that wonderful show!

Is that like melting records? Because I love free speech!
|
Mon. 12/13/10 9:51pm
Dan B:
@EC, yeah it is a little like melting records. But Billy Joel's speech is not going to be stifled -- as if! -- but mine is going to be expressed, and a little catharsis achieved. Yay!

I recently found a major bummer of a CD in my collection, a wretched Robert Fripp side-band called "Sunday all over the World". It is heartbreakingly shitty I have already submitted a cassette I don't like, but would like to send this CD if I may.

Love covers so 180 opposite from the original, familiar version that you've no clue until told. Then it's "ooohhh...wow!" Listening from flyover land: Columbia, Missouri.

Hey, Third Reich & Roll is a great album! You can't go wrong with an album side titled Hitler Was a Vegetarian...I got an A in contemporary art history class for my paper on appropriation using that album as an example, my prof loved it and I let him keep the tape

Whats wrong with the "cassingle?" An overpriced hunk of plastic with a reduced amount of recording tape inside containing the same song once on both sides? What's the issue?

Two fun ones on Bloodshot Records' comp "Down to the Promised Land" - Waco Brothers "Baba O'Riley", The Unholy Trio's "Bring The Noise"
|
Mon. 12/13/10 10:49pm
Droll:
Transformative covers: I Want To Hold Your Hand (Sparks), Any cover by California Guitar Trio or Dokaka or Senor Coconut or Moog Cookbook, Tainted Love (Coil), (I Love You) And Don't Forget It (Quincy Jones), Slaughter on 10th Avenue (Mick Ronson), Like A Virgin (Royal Philharmonic Orchestra), Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now) (Van Halen, okay -- the band is transformed more than the song), Astronomy Domine (Voivod)
|
Mon. 12/13/10 10:49pm
blacktooth:
The steel drum band on youtube doing Joy Divisions "Transmission." Melvins covering Flippers "Way Of The World."
|
Mon. 12/13/10 10:51pm
Parq:
With all these Eno covers being mentioned, how about the flip side? Eno and Manzanera, with a great bunch of side musicians collectively known as 801 did a live album, ca. 1979, that begins with "Tomorrow Never Knows" and ends with "You Really Got Me". Loved it for three decades now.
|
Mon. 12/13/10 10:55pm
Ork:
Señor Coconut's 'Autobahn'
|
Mon. 12/13/10 10:57pm
Dan B:
@Parq, nice to see you around here again -- great suggestion, thanks. I'm going to be trying to string the covers along when/if I can -- i.e. Band A covering Band B, then Band B covering Band C, then Band C covering Band D, etc.
|
Mon. 12/13/10 10:58pm
Rick:
Hey Parq: I loved that lp and blurted it early on in the shinanigans. That was a fun spazzy blurr!
|
Mon. 12/13/10 11:04pm
Trevor:
The Hickoids: "Corn Foo Fighting"
|
Mon. 12/13/10 11:07pm
Droll:
Now I understand the goal: A covers B covers C etc. I'm So Lo Lonesome I Could Cry (Everly Brothers), Wake Up Little Suzy (Simon and Garfunkle), The Boxer (Dylan), All Along The Watchtower (Hendrix), Foxy Lady (Cure), Love Song (311)... oh what a fun show that's going to be!
|
Mon. 12/13/10 11:11pm
david ftrom ks:
,,,,,,,hey i met the Hickoids at the Colllege Motel in Lawrence Ks.in 1989,,They were a fine band to hear Live,,,,,very original,,,,,,
|
Mon. 12/13/10 11:14pm
Parq:
Phlo and Eddie didn't exactly cover "Kung Fu Fighting", but they song-checked it in a bit that included the line (approximate, from memory): "We may come from different places, do different things -- we may have nothing in common at all except one thing -- that song sucks."
|
Mon. 12/13/10 11:16pm
david from ks:
,,,,,,"Hard Korn",,,,,Hickoids First LP
|
Mon. 12/13/10 11:17pm

|
Mon. 12/13/10 11:18pm
Brian:
How much did the lift-off fundraiser make?
|
Mon. 12/13/10 11:23pm
Dan B:
@Brian, I think it came in to about $70K -- not bad, but a bit below the $180K goal to keep our budget on track.
|
Mon. 12/13/10 11:24pm
Dan B:
ANYONE WHO WANTS TO SEND IN RECORDS FOR THE RECORD SMASMASH SHOW: send em to me at three fifty eight Argyle road, brooklyn new york 11218.

slugluv1313:
joining in somewhat late in the discussion -- will you be smashing up JANDEK recordings by the truckload? or has that been done to death already?
|
Mon. 12/13/10 11:31pm
david from ks:
,,,,Dan B,,,,Good Show,,,,,
|
Mon. 12/13/10 11:32pm
Dan B:
@slugluv, oh good idea! I don't have any to contribute, but it's a perfect freeformization of the idea! who can spare a Jandek record? (Is that synonymous with owning one?)
|
Mon. 12/13/10 11:55pm
slugluv1313:
wasn't JANDEK selling his LPs by the BOXFUL at one point?
|
Mon. 12/13/10 11:58pm
Dan B:
Haha I think that's true. He's a world-traveler now!
|
Tue. 12/14/10 12:50am
slugluv1313:
ha ha! re: "world traveler" -- SOMEWHERE i still have the letter from "Corwood Industries" -- maybe from mid/late 1980s? -- something like, "No tour plans for JANDEK at this time" -- !
