Playlist for This Is the Modern World with Trouble - October 15, 2009

Thursdays 9am - Noon on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

'morning trouble

Thu. 10/15/09 9:09am From: dale

good morning. frost on the punkin sounds picturesque, but it's just cold, grey and damp in the hudson valley.

Thu. 10/15/09 9:11am From: Pieter

Good morning Trouble! Gavin Bryars, great choice!

Thu. 10/15/09 9:11am From: chris

Now, this is just lovely. Love, Judy

Thu. 10/15/09 9:14am From: texas scott

this autumn hymn is really nice.

Thu. 10/15/09 9:16am From: trouble

good day all. hey dale This weekend is the high holy days of sheep and wool at rhinebeck. but the weather looks less than stellar

Thu. 10/15/09 9:16am From: Michele in London

Hey, I only discovered this cool station cos I was on Michael Shelleys show last Saturday and keep tunin' in now - you play such great music. LOVE this Gavin Bryars tune. Mellow, chilled, just lovely. X

Thu. 10/15/09 9:18am From: annie

it's always a great weekend trouble. the sheepherders are so used to this.. i've never been to that show, but i know many who participate..

Thu. 10/15/09 9:20am From: annie

there was a smaller gathering up here at stone and thistle farm for a shpherd's neighbouring.. the food was fantastic, bon fire, shearing, good company.. and it was blustery!

Thu. 10/15/09 9:25am From: Cheri Pi

Today's show is so cozy, perfect for a chilly, rainy Cincinnati day.

Thu. 10/15/09 9:28am From: Jennique

Quelle heure est-il?

C'est l'heure de Trouble.

Thu. 10/15/09 9:29am From: v k

mownin' trouble...your show makes/keeps me happy

Thu. 10/15/09 9:29am From: dale

i've never been to the wool event. i always go to the antique power event in the spring to see the steam engines do their thing and blacksmithing, but it's been hijacked by antique motorcycle folk (which is cool, too). at least you'll be under cover in the barns, no?

Thu. 10/15/09 9:36am From: annie

they used to have an event called sheep to shawl...

Thu. 10/15/09 9:37am From: trouble

dale, most of the animals and wool people are under cover, but the sheep dog trials and pumpkin chuckin' are out in the fields. we will just wear our wellies...

Thu. 10/15/09 9:37am From: trouble

sheep to shawl! i love that...

Thu. 10/15/09 9:38am From: Adrian in London

Listening live for a change and happy to be doing so. I covered sheep dog trials as a local newspaper reporter. They're quite good fun, if you like sheep. Or dogs.

Thu. 10/15/09 9:42am From: trouble

adrian i lived in london one summer in the late 80's and fell in love with sheep dog trials, as that was all that was on the tv, except for wimbledon, it seemed...

Thu. 10/15/09 9:43am From: Adrian in London

And snooker, surely?

Thu. 10/15/09 9:45am From: Chris from DC

All I saw last time I was there was cricket.

Thu. 10/15/09 9:47am From: Adrian in London

And how did you like it, Chris?

Thu. 10/15/09 9:48am From: dale

here's some neat sheepherding. you decide if it's fake or not:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2FX9rviEhw

Thu. 10/15/09 9:50am From: Chris

Adrian, it's pretty interesting but I didn't fully understand it.

Thu. 10/15/09 9:52am From: Adrian in London

The complexity of the arcane rules are part of the joy of cricket I'm afraid. Neil hannon has done an album about cricket under the name The Duckworth Lewis method, named after the chaps who came up with the system of working out how many runs were needed to win after a match was curtailed because of inclement weather.

Thu. 10/15/09 9:53am From: dc pat

and what's wrong with Wimbledon???

Thu. 10/15/09 9:55am From: Stuart Troutman

Thanks for choosing these Brian Wilson sessions. There are lots of fascinating moments from these tapes.

Thu. 10/15/09 9:57am From: Mischief

Love this song by the Cure, even digging this version. Good choice Trouble

Thu. 10/15/09 10:01am From: trouble

pat don't get your tennis shorts in a bunch. ..wimbledon is fab too, but not as many cute dogs and sheep

Thu. 10/15/09 10:04am From: v k

cricket - anyone read New Yorker article last fall about Robert Stanford's impact (to put it nicely) on cricket? amazing read. Especially closing paragraph. Gotta love New Yorker's method of story telling.

Thu. 10/15/09 10:06am From: Rob W

Trouble: "I'm just trying to make all those sounds that people normally take out of audiobooks."

Tell me about it... At least I didn't have to work on the Ivanka Trump book.

Thu. 10/15/09 10:07am From: Adrian in London

Netherland is a great book about cricket in New York, incidentally

Thu. 10/15/09 10:07am From: trouble

Thu. 10/15/09 10:31am From: dc pat

Thu. 10/15/09 10:37am From: GP

As a graphic designer with a deep typography fetish, I give thee mega-kudos. That's hella-old-school, as the brats of today might say.

Thu. 10/15/09 10:43am From: postmanpaul

hi annie!!! ha ha, thanks! my teacher was trained by her dad who was trained by eric gill.

Thu. 10/15/09 10:44am From: dc pat

GP: yeah, I thought it was "be coise and quiet" or something...

Thu. 10/15/09 10:44am From: annie

ok... i do like this song, so sue me..

Thu. 10/15/09 10:46am From: PMD

Hi all - been sort of listening, mostly working. Music dropped out for a while, but I"m back. Thanks Trouble!

Thu. 10/15/09 10:46am From: GP

Me too Annie.

Hey Stingy.....YOu get any new neighbors yet or you still have that building to yourself?

Thu. 10/15/09 10:48am From: postmanpaul

hi bsi! as a 'retired' graphic designer with an abnormal degree of fondness for the letter form, its tickling my fancy enormously!

Thu. 10/15/09 10:49am From: north guinea hills

Damn trouble, I remember dancing/dj to this mix back in college.... damn, i'm old!

Thu. 10/15/09 10:49am From: dc pat

Thu. 10/15/09 10:50am From: kham

Hi Trouble - in the habit of playing your show during my design foundations class again - perfect. my students are all trying to understand semiotics through photoshop...

Thu. 10/15/09 10:52am From: BSI

PMP: funny thing about that, way too many of us are "retired" these days... Feeling like the last dodo over here.

Thu. 10/15/09 10:52am From: postmanpaul

bsi...eric gill, as in gill sans!

Thu. 10/15/09 10:54am From: annie

great pat, i could use a little excitement!

Thu. 10/15/09 10:55am From: postmanpaul

yeah bsi, it seems that any pimp with an apple mac believes they are a graphic designer these days. apologies to serious pimps sans macs.

Thu. 10/15/09 10:58am From: GP

Trouble should update the playlist via Linotype and distribute mimeographed copies to all of all...ready all at once now...hold up to nose and sniff the ammonia.

Thu. 10/15/09 10:58am From: GP

"All of all" usually equals "all of us"

Thu. 10/15/09 11:00am From: postmanpaul

...also notwithstanding your students and your good self, kham!

Thu. 10/15/09 11:02am From: trs

Or maybe it's a non-linear continuum of graphic designers. Fashion? Food? Photography? .. Business? Or is it yes/no like Madelaine Kahn in History of the World Part I?

Thu. 10/15/09 11:04am From: fishmonkeystew

The Blob! I have a '50s version of this on my ipod. Too funny.

Thu. 10/15/09 11:04am From: kham

If you use the word semiotics in your next mic break you'll blow their iminds, trouble...

Thu. 10/15/09 11:05am From: dc pat

"whadaya mean you don't do it? Everybody does it. I do it all the time. I just did it and I'm ready to do it again."

Thu. 10/15/09 11:06am From: postmanpaul

gp - stet. i liked it the way it was in a dyslexicographical kind of way!

Thu. 10/15/09 11:07am From: Comicus

But we Romans are rich. We've got a lot of gods. We've got a god for everything. The only thing we don't have a god for is premature ejaculation... but I hear that's coming quickly.

Thu. 10/15/09 11:08am From: Gregory

Hey! You said "every cultural phenomena"! Every phenomenON! Ack!

Thu. 10/15/09 11:08am From: kham

Thu. 10/15/09 11:11am From: 55rpm

Trouble, Nellie McKay's latest (Doris Day tribute) is lots of fun. Got it?

Thu. 10/15/09 11:12am From: GP

I hear you PMP. I found an old Speedball type style guide ( probably from the 40's or early 50's) that belonged to my artist uncle.
I want to copy every letter in there....by hand.

Another vote for Nellie McKay..something about her...hmmm.

Thu. 10/15/09 11:12am From: Laurie

Thurston Moore got on my shit list when I saw those Nardwuar interviews.

I love that Thurston Moore inspired Andrew W.K. to not be a douchebag to interviewers.

Thu. 10/15/09 11:13am From: Parq

Trouble, hope you will be bringing Icepack again this year. I'm looking forward to his latest LP Modification creations.

Thu. 10/15/09 11:15am From: Chris

Please to elaborate on the "LP modification table."

Thu. 10/15/09 11:16am From: trouble

sorry to have offended gregory, but that is more likely my RI accent wreking havoc...

Thu. 10/15/09 11:17am From: BSI

Pray, does it involve a sewing machine and umbrella?

Thu. 10/15/09 11:19am From: GP

Laurie,

Thu. 10/15/09 11:24am From: trent

Thu. 10/15/09 11:25am From: dale

this song has a knight rider-ish vibe to it.

Thu. 10/15/09 11:26am From: WFMU Fan

Hey Trouble, can you play some Art Paul Schlosser... I would like to hear " I don't want to find Waldo" or you can play one of your favorite Art Paul Schlosser song, either on will do.

Thu. 10/15/09 11:27am From: Mischief

This song reminds me of a old Nintendo game

Thu. 10/15/09 11:29am From: Mischief

Now this sounds like Donkey Kong Jr.

Thu. 10/15/09 11:30am From: Jim

I listened to Nardwuar's show yesterday. Not my cup of tea.

Thu. 10/15/09 11:32am From: trent

this is another thing we have in common, can i point people to http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Wildbirds_and_Peacedrums/Live_on_Sound_and_Safe_with_Trent_at_WFMU_92109/Chain_of_Steel

Thu. 10/15/09 11:39am From: Laurie

Oh, the members of Sonic Youth were being too-cool jerks to Nardwuar and then gave him noogies and went through his stuff and smashed a rare record he brought.

Andrew W.K. saw this and decided he didn't ever want to be like that, so that's why he's such a fun guy.

Thu. 10/15/09 11:40am From: Laurie

PS: This is my favorite Andrew W.K. interview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6H6n_onZI0

I LOVE this song!!!

Thu. 10/15/09 11:41am From: GP

Emile is about 90 lbs of nuclear hotness.

Laurie,
Thanks.. found the Sonic Youth Interview..it was just strange. A W.K. is cool, wish I lived closed to NYC to check out his place.
