Playlist for The Evan "Funk" Davies Show - August 19, 2008

Tuesdays 11pm - 2am on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

Starting with the 70s -- it could be a classic (or obscure) punk rocker, a forgotten disco diva, a long-unheard hit record, or none of these. What happens next depends on what's in the WFMU new bin and whether I remember my records from home. Tune in and find out! You'll even hear a live band once in a while.

Yay for "Where's Captain Kirk"! I was psyched.

Tue. 8/19/08 11:12pm From: efd

yay for being psyched!

Tue. 8/19/08 11:14pm From: Amanda

Yay for this being my favorite opening efd set of all time!

Tue. 8/19/08 11:14pm From: john

And good evening everyone! The Professionals record is doing it for me--I dropped my copy of the single (with poster sleeve!) on the way home from college one June and lost a big chunk of vinyl. Still played, mostly.

Tue. 8/19/08 11:17pm From: efd

yeah, i don't know what ever happened to my poster sleeve. :(

It's funny, I was telling myself the last couple of days that I wasn't going to do a live band-related set after doing that last week and, well, here we are!

Tue. 8/19/08 11:22pm From: Amanda

A classy move, I think. Them Cute Lepers are going to kill.

Tue. 8/19/08 11:28pm From: Sybil

That transition from "Beat your heart out" to Lionel Newman was... interesting.

Tue. 8/19/08 11:31pm From: john

Oh, annoyingly, had to turn down Dodger tickets for this Thursday afternoon, won't be there til Friday or Saturday, dammit! Tried to change my travel plans, but to no avail.

Tue. 8/19/08 11:33pm From: Sybil

:( John

Tue. 8/19/08 11:35pm From: Jason

Wow it's a great Tuesday evening, with the Zeros and all. Psyched for this live set

Tue. 8/19/08 11:39pm From: Stanley

wow the cute lepers are awesome.
thanks evan!

Tue. 8/19/08 11:40pm From: efd

thank YOU, Stanley! And Jason!

John, that sucks about the Dodgers game!! Hi Sybil!

Tue. 8/19/08 11:49pm From: efd

seriously, how good is this band?!

[pats self on back]

Tue. 8/19/08 11:51pm From: E.L.

Seriously— tons of fun.

Tue. 8/19/08 11:56pm From: Amanda

They're so good I'm having trouble thinking of enthusiasm words to express how good they are. I rejected "wyckyd."

Tue. 8/19/08 11:57pm From: stanley again

so good I can't go to bed yet even though I need to get up early

Wed. 8/20/08 12:00am From: efd

Amanda, how about "poptastic"?

Stanley, luckily for you this is the last song!

Wed. 8/20/08 12:01am From: efd

oh, and Sybil, re the transition: that's *exactly* why I did it! :)

Wed. 8/20/08 12:01am From: stanley

is luckily the right word?

Wed. 8/20/08 12:03am From: efd

only because you have to get up early!

Wed. 8/20/08 12:03am From: Amanda

Stanley, you are staying up. Too much adrenaleen bumping around after that!

"Poptastic" = good, but I think there needs to be a swear word in there.

Wed. 8/20/08 12:06am From: Laurie

Boo. Florida needs love. :(

Re: Prostitute motels. Every motel -- or hotel -- is a prostitute joint. I just found out an unnamed punk rock legend stayed at the hotel I just booked for my annual October New York vacay. This person apparently hired a $2,000 hipster hooker to force feed him dog food, as I learned whilst reading Radar. This hotel is also home to Gordon Ramsay's restaurant, so it's home to all kinds of whores. Ho-ooooo!

Wed. 8/20/08 12:10am From: Laurie

Addendum: MIAMI needs love. We are lucky if we get one really cool band to come down here per month. :(

Wed. 8/20/08 12:11am From: Stanley

I've gotta check the rest of the archive out tomorrow. Thanks again Evan, great show so far!

Wed. 8/20/08 12:18am From: john

I just heard today that two of my best friends in LA are moving to Miami, but they're not pop stars. Yet, anyway.

Wed. 8/20/08 12:28am From: efd

unnamed punk rock legend <> Jarvis Cocker, I presume.

I don't think the Cute Lepers could really hear me when I was asking them to tell me the story of what they saw at the hotel.
Which is probably just as well.

Stanley, glad you liked the show!

Wed. 8/20/08 12:32am From: efd

I have to say, if I were in a touring band I don't think I'd want to play in south Florida either. Or Maine, for that matter.

Wed. 8/20/08 12:38am From: Laurie

Hey! Don't talk about Jarv like that.

I really wish the folks at Radar would have risked a slander lawsuit and printed his name. I'm going to guess it's not Merle Allin since I don't think he can afford to stay at the London. Also, I wouldn't consider him a legend. Personally.

Wed. 8/20/08 12:41am From: john

Teenage Filmstars/The Times/just plain Ed Ball rawk. What's wrong with Maine, other than moose trying to crash the show, antlers getting in the way of people trying to see the band?

Wed. 8/20/08 12:44am From: efd

nothing against Maine (or Florida, for that matter) in and of themselves, I was just saying that from a navigational perspective.

Wed. 8/20/08 12:56am From: efd

so, anyone want to take bets on whether the Yankees will be tied for fourth place after tomorrow's game?

Wed. 8/20/08 1:01am From: Sybil

What are these Yankees of which you speak?

Wed. 8/20/08 1:03am From: Sybil

Oh, wait. Didn't they used to play baseball or something like that?

Wed. 8/20/08 1:06am From: efd

heh... yeah, that's them!

Wed. 8/20/08 1:09am From: efd

did I really hear correctly that Pavano has developed some kind of "soreness" just as he was finally about to be called up?

Wed. 8/20/08 1:11am From: Laurie

Pavano has the herps?

Wed. 8/20/08 1:12am From: Sybil

"normal soreness" per Girardi

Wed. 8/20/08 1:13am From: Listener David

Ummmm...Yankees suck..Mets rule!

Wed. 8/20/08 1:17am From: Sybil

There are two Major League pitchers named Buchholz, and they are apparently unrelated to each other.

Taylor's way cute.

Wed. 8/20/08 1:21am From: Laurie

Oh, Rick Springfield! What happened to you?

Wed. 8/20/08 1:21am From: trailer

Why evan, why?

Wed. 8/20/08 1:22am From: Qfwfq

I was going to guess Bernie Goetz

Wed. 8/20/08 1:22am From: HR

Robyn Hitchcock

Wed. 8/20/08 1:26am From: efd

Oh come on, it wasn't that bad!

Wed. 8/20/08 1:27am From: efd

(bear in mind, you're dealing with someone who plays April Wine on a semi-regular basis)

Wed. 8/20/08 1:30am From: john

I like the new Rick Springfield! And be nice to the Yankees, the rest of us NEED minor league baseball.

Wed. 8/20/08 1:30am From: Droll

Funny that Von Hayes song uses the riff from Rick Springfields' "I've done everything for you"...
and still not nearly enough April Wine, I say.

Wed. 8/20/08 1:32am From: john

Putting it all together...Von Hayes, a band named for a ballplayer. Others?

Wed. 8/20/08 1:35am From: Droll

I didn't get the AC/DC riff, but that's uncanny because tonight I met the drummer from an all-girl AC/DC tribute band! The circle is now complete.

Wed. 8/20/08 1:46am From: efd

i'm not sure if this circle can be any completer, but I will just add that I used to be a drummer in a mixed-gender AC/DC cover band.

Wed. 8/20/08 1:52am From: Droll

Our circle is indeed, somehow more circler than before.
You're already soooooo my favorite DJ -- to also be sooooo my favorite drummer you must first perform Four Horsemen by Aphrodites' Child with the Hoof 'n' Mouth.
