Playlist for The Evan "Funk" Davies Show - August 12, 2008

Tuesdays 11pm - 2am on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

Starting with the 70s -- it could be a classic (or obscure) punk rocker, a forgotten disco diva, a long-unheard hit record, or none of these. What happens next depends on what's in the WFMU new bin and whether I remember my records from home. Tune in and find out! You'll even hear a live band once in a while.

Tue. 8/12/08 11:09pm From: Tamar

Yay! You're getting me all in the mood for the Individuals.

Tue. 8/12/08 11:11pm From: ted

i used to think you only played funk music

Tue. 8/12/08 11:11pm From: E.L.

There's only one thing I want to say to you:

Who stole my The Bongos 7"

Tue. 8/12/08 11:12pm From: Sybil

Good evening!

Red Sox just won the most nerve racking 4+ hour game I have ever fought off an ulcer during, 19-16.

And you have no freaking idea how appropriate that first song was, efd. I'm going to throw cold water on my head now.

Tue. 8/12/08 11:12pm From: Sybil

Oops, no, Manny's at bat!

Tue. 8/12/08 11:12pm From: john

Games with football scores always cause uneasiness.

Tue. 8/12/08 11:14pm From: Sybil

Football games always cause me uneasiness. Futbol, though...

Tue. 8/12/08 11:15pm From: john

no arguments from me this time!

Tue. 8/12/08 11:16pm From: efd

hi everyone!
Tamar, glad this set is having the desired effect! Sybil, thanks for the score update - that game sounds like it was insane.
Welcome back E.L., hi john, and Ted - you can't judge a book by its cover, or a DJ by his/her nickname!

Tue. 8/12/08 11:20pm From: ~L

Nice to hear vintage yo la tengo!

Tue. 8/12/08 11:30pm From: Matt

That opening set was terrific.

Tue. 8/12/08 11:33pm From: Sybil

Braves postponed their game (till tomorrow) due to rain. Dang. After last week, I would have said that was impossible. Couldn't they find their water wings?

Tue. 8/12/08 11:35pm From: Sybil

Yes, that was some opening set. The bangs just keep getting bigger.

Tue. 8/12/08 11:35pm From: Emily

Welcome back!

Tue. 8/12/08 11:35pm From: efd

thanks, Matt Sybil and ~L!

Tue. 8/12/08 11:36pm From: Sybil

Individuals YEAHHHHHHHHH!

Tue. 8/12/08 11:41pm From: Joe

Wondeful things like this make me fervently wish that I had lived through the 80's, rather than been born in the goddamned middle.

Tue. 8/12/08 11:42pm From: Sybil

Joe, thanks for making me feel OLD. :)

Tue. 8/12/08 11:45pm From: efd

Joe, that is just part of the community service that WFMU provides!

Tue. 8/12/08 11:46pm From: E.L.

Sybil, I'm reminded of this everyday. I work in a wine shop and I'm carding people who were born in 1987 who can legally drink. It's messed up.

This set sounds great!

Tue. 8/12/08 11:47pm From: Sybil

Listening to a love Individuals set and watching Manny at bat... what could be finer?

Tue. 8/12/08 11:48pm From: efd

E.L., I agree! All I did was stand there... all props go to Gil Shuster for working his audio magic, and to the band of course for their magical playing.

Tue. 8/12/08 11:48pm From: Sybil

People who were born in 1987 can legally drink? No. You're making that up!

Tue. 8/12/08 11:50pm From: Joe

Oh, can we drink.

Tue. 8/12/08 11:50pm From: Sybil

Manny base hit! Ha! Don't throw at the helmet, NL pitchers!

Tue. 8/12/08 11:50pm From: E.L.

Well, I serve them, but I still don't believe it's legal.

Tue. 8/12/08 11:51pm From: Sybil

Joe, but legally?

Oh, who am I to talk. I remember when the drinking age was 18 most places.

Tue. 8/12/08 11:52pm From: efd

Manny is loving the NL! They're playing Philly again, right?

Tue. 8/12/08 11:53pm From: Sybil

Philly, yeppers.

And LA loves Manny. Wow.

Tue. 8/12/08 11:54pm From: Joe

My uncle was of the certain age in NY, where, just shy of his 18th birthday, he was forced to wait 3 more years to drink. But only in the city. Long Island bars mostly follow the "you must be this tall" policy. At least, on the North Shore.

Tue. 8/12/08 11:54pm From: E.L.

I think they should flip it so that you can drink at 16 and drive at 21. It would take the mystique out of it.

Tue. 8/12/08 11:54pm From: efd

as well they should!

Tue. 8/12/08 11:55pm From: Sybil

NOMAH!!!!

If only it were yesterday, when Derek Lowe was pitching. I'd be in cognitive dissonance.

Tue. 8/12/08 11:55pm From: john

Will provide an in-person report as to how much LA loves Manny in a couple weeks. Stay tuned!

Tue. 8/12/08 11:56pm From: Sybil

John, I am consumed with jealousy. Eagerly awaiting your report!

Tue. 8/12/08 11:57pm From: efd

Awesome John, you're going to a game out there?

If I weren't going to be out of town the weekend of the 23rd/24th i would be planning a Philly road trip to see the Dodgers.

Tue. 8/12/08 11:57pm From: john

I'll let you know if there are extra tickets! I'm looking forward to my annual jaunt to Dodger Stadium. Hope to catch a couple games at least.

Tue. 8/12/08 11:59pm From: Sybil

Hmm. What am I doing the 24th?

Tue. 8/12/08 11:59pm From: Joe

So... how 'bout that Pudge... yep... pretty psyched about that...

*crickets*

Wed. 8/13/08 12:01am From: john

Don't know when the tix are for, but I'll probably be there most of September. Or until I get bored and want to go home.

Wed. 8/13/08 12:02am From: Sybil

BTW (and it's SO hard following a relief pitcher, but Mosaic helps!) There is some evidence I was right about Yoyo only needing to pitch more regularly. In his last ten games he's got an ERA of 1.86, and he's been pitching on average every other day or so for the Braves.

Small samples and all, but I feel vindicated.

Wed. 8/13/08 12:03am From: efd

Joe, the Yankees won tonight right? I know they were ahead just before 11.
Nady's working out OK for them, at least....

Wed. 8/13/08 12:04am From: john

Yanks-Twinks 6-6 in the 11th. Damon on 2nd with 2 out.

Wed. 8/13/08 12:04am From: Sybil

NYY-Twins still tied 6-6 in the 11th, I believe.

Wed. 8/13/08 12:04am From: efd

wow, no shit!

Wed. 8/13/08 12:05am From: efd

Sybil, good to hear that update on Yo-Yo.
When is Byrd's first start for Boston? Friday?

Wed. 8/13/08 12:06am From: Joe

Oh yeah. I'm waiting for the choke.

Wed. 8/13/08 12:06am From: john

Sexson grounds out and we go to the bottom of the 11th

Wed. 8/13/08 12:06am From: Sybil

Freaky simultaneity strikes again!

Which reminds me.... efd, I had some brainstorms about baseball-realted songs. I'll email you, if I remember.

Wed. 8/13/08 12:07am From: Sybil

Uh, that would be "baseball-related".

Wed. 8/13/08 12:08am From: Sybil

I love the guitar in this one.

Wed. 8/13/08 12:09am From: Joe

This band is so good I feel like they're fixing all my problems.

Wed. 8/13/08 12:10am From: E.L.

I love that high hat action.

Wed. 8/13/08 12:12am From: efd

it's too bad one of them lives in LA, that kind of puts a damper on future reunion shows locally. But yeah, i have to agree, this set is amazing.

Wed. 8/13/08 12:13am From: efd

oh, and Sybil, yes, brainstorm away!

Wed. 8/13/08 12:15am From: john

And we go to the 12th. And yeah, the set is super cool!

Wed. 8/13/08 12:17am From: Sybil

WTF long, torturous games today? and Braves rainout? Is the sky falling? Is it because of the Perseids?

Wed. 8/13/08 12:19am From: Joe

I blame all my teams' misfortune on astrological events.

Wed. 8/13/08 12:21am From: john

Well, Yanks are rallying in the 12th, so the stars may have re-aligned for you

Wed. 8/13/08 12:21am From: Joe

Wooo! Dover! Morris County, represent!

Was probably the Baker Theater!

Between that and my town on a tattoo on the front page of the Star Ledger, I'm having a big day.

Wed. 8/13/08 12:27am From: Sybil

Manny encore une fois.

Wed. 8/13/08 12:28am From: Mr. Wut

Whuuuuuut!

Wed. 8/13/08 12:29am From: Sybil

Wah!!! Don't hit the Manny!

Wed. 8/13/08 12:31am From: Sybil

Checking the Star-Ledger website now...

Manny amazingly sanguine for someone who has a target painted on him, or so it seems...

Wed. 8/13/08 12:33am From: efd

Joe, I saw that photo! Rockaway Twp, right?
(yes, I am a Star-Ledger home delivery subscriber)

Wed. 8/13/08 12:37am From: larry

FIELDS is one of my all-time top ten favorites!!! All hail THE INDIVIDUALS! Will they ever play out again> I wonder...

p.s. World Championships:YANKS 26 Boston 6
(just to put things back into the BIG picture)

Wed. 8/13/08 12:38am From: Sybil

It's going to be interesting if the NL pitchers decide that pitching AT Manny is a good strategy. I'm not all that committed to nonviolence, is what I'm saying.

Wed. 8/13/08 12:39am From: Joe

Yup. Giancarlo Brazzeze, was in my middle school homeroom. Decent kid, big italian bully type, never bothered me though. Smoked pot with him once in high school, I knew he enlisted straight after graduation but I guess he's reserve now, since that was what the article was about. I've always thought those Jersey tats were kinda stupid, but with the little hometown star, his kinda plucked at my heartstrings. I wish him luck in Anbar, hope he comes back okay. We've already had two guys from my high school get maimed over there. General Odiernio is from Rockaway too.

Wed. 8/13/08 12:39am From: Sybil

Oh, Joe. You'll get used to the Yankees being just another team. It only hurts at first.

Wed. 8/13/08 12:41am From: Joe

the Yankee's being just another team = one aspect of 80'sness that I'm glad I missed out on.

Wed. 8/13/08 12:42am From: Sybil

Can I just say? This is my favorite baseball thread. I live all week for this. Because it has music too!

Wed. 8/13/08 12:44am From: Joe

I'm waiting for Evan to cave and just do a baseball call-in night. Maybe during playoffs.

Wed. 8/13/08 12:44am From: Sybil

Ah, Joe, yeah, forgot that historical aspect.

Right now I'll mention that I've always liked Joe Torre. Take that as you will.

Wed. 8/13/08 12:50am From: Sybil

We'll get an all-baseball show, during the postseason, and YoYo will grant an interview (the Braves, sadly, having failed to make the playoffs) and his BFF Manny Ramirez will call in and...

Be still my heart!

Wed. 8/13/08 12:53am From: Sybil

No no no you didn't play moscosos pateticos!

Too much.

Wed. 8/13/08 12:55am From: efd

ok, this song was kind of a mistake

Wed. 8/13/08 12:57am From: Sybil

But not this one!

Wed. 8/13/08 12:58am From: efd

Larry, let's make a bet on what will happen first: another Individuals show, or another Yankee world championship. :)
Yeah, I def want to do a baseball call-in show one of these days... I think I'd need to enlist some of WFMU's other baseball fans to help out, though.

Wed. 8/13/08 1:03am From: Sybil

Seriously, the J-guys (Joe and John) are among the best anywhere in terms of baseball fans! And me. of course. No one exceeds my fandom or statistical prowess. (Yeah, right.)

But... did folks catch Todd-O-Phonic Todd's trade talk? Spectactular.

Wed. 8/13/08 1:09am From: Joe

I am but a step above the casual fan. I only have one sabermetrics book, and I don't even understand it.

Wow, Ev, that sounded odd coming out of your mouth. Not to assault your metal cred.

Wed. 8/13/08 1:10am From: Sybil

I. um,

Motorhead?

Wed. 8/13/08 1:12am From: Joe

Trick question! Lemmy IS god!

What a douche Brendan Fraiser is.

Wed. 8/13/08 1:13am From: Jessica

Motorhead.

Are there going to be images to go w/the Individuals set?

Wed. 8/13/08 1:15am From: Jessica

Wow, that SoB was almost too much fun.

Wed. 8/13/08 1:16am From: efd

no images, unfortunately. Glenn brought one of those little quasi-disposable video cameras (FLip? Flex? It's his kid's), but the battery was dead.
Sybil, when was Todd's trade talk? I missed it!

Wed. 8/13/08 1:16am From: Heck, you think we

<blockquote.I only have one sabermetrics book, and I don't even understand it.,/blockquote.

Wed. 8/13/08 1:19am From: efd

sorry Sybil, no HTML of any kind works here!

Wed. 8/13/08 1:21am From: Joe

WYSIWYG, my ass.

... little programming humor, for ya.

Wed. 8/13/08 1:36am From: Joe

J'accuse! Payola! They're plying you with free subs!

Wed. 8/13/08 1:37am From: efd

ha, I can't be bought with a few $3.99 hoagies, delicious though they may be.

Wed. 8/13/08 1:39am From: Joe

QuickChek, my friend.

Also, this might be the first record I've heard you play that I actually own. Came in a crate of free vinyl I got off craigslist. Gotta start somewhere.

Wed. 8/13/08 1:41am From: efd

dude, I stop at QuikCheck every week on my way here. Seriously.
There's no Wawas in my part of Jerz anyway.

Wed. 8/13/08 1:50am From: efd

edit: QuickChek

Wed. 8/13/08 1:54am From: Joe

My own proper spelling was a shot in the dark. Quickchek vs. Wawa is most definitely the true demarcation of North vs. South Jersey.

It boggles my mind that I share geographic space with a large population of Eagles, Flyers, and worst of all, Phillies fans.

Wed. 8/13/08 3:29pm From: donn

Do we have to wait another 25 years for more shows by The Individuals?
