Hi Brian, Tom Tom & all. Cage took part in a Finnegans Wake reading group in Cologne in the 1950s in which also Ligeti too part, I am told. That was the heyday of Cologne as centre of the new music scene in western Europe. Still plenty of composers in Cologne, but centre of gravity has shifted to Berlin since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

West Berlin had a vibrant music scene (and still does), but the new music composers were in Cologne. Ton, Steine, Scherben, based in West Berlin, was famous for its politrock in the 1970s. And Nina Hagen grew on Berlin soil. Her mother was (is?) Wolf Biermann's life-companion. Nina's voice is a trained opera singer's voice. From the 1990s on Berlin has been the centre for techno music.

I think Morty was fond of sparring in Cologne with Stockhausen, and also in Paris iwith Boulez. Composing with inspiration from kelim carpet patterns is rather different from composing according to the strictures of serial music. Not to mention aleatoric methods. 'Alea' = L. 'dice'.

intro to article on secret societies
By their very name, secret societies inspire curiosity, fascination and distrust. When, for example, news broke that Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia spent his final hours in February 2016 with members of a secret society for elite hunters, people naturally wanted to know more about the group.

At least in the northeast US, there's a shortage of affordable housing. Realtor friend sez just not enough houses have been built in the last 25 years. And back in Denville NJ, new townhouse development going up at prices for the 1%: "starting around $700,000."

It's hard to learn to see certain phenomena. Perhaps the most important is learning to see the difference between the correctness of facts and the truth of phenomena. If you understand philosophy as the love of truth, it's important to understand the nature of truth.

Hi M of C: enjoy your insights (especially on German culture). Being the right age at the right time for NDW (“new German wave”) I was fairly immersed in all that punk & post punk & art damaged madness (as well as post era music follow thru) YET, entirely missed the historic & seminal band “Ton, Steine, Scherben” (based in West Berlin, was famous for its politrock in the 1970s). Do you have any particular peak albums to recommend fur the most adventurous highlights. After looking at Discogs, I couldn’t believe I had never seen Any of their albums. IMO, They weren’t getting any distribution or popularity here.
Lastly, loved Nina Hagen - Even her pre-punk cabaret styled stuff - Is Fun! Who is Wolf Biermann's (gotta look that up). Thanks in advance do to time! 🤝👏✌️

The greatest propaganda lie perpetrated by the business class/Financial Terrorist faction is that there’s such a thing as “the Free Market.”
There can be none and will never be one as long as there’s a capitalist economy. In which monopolies control everything, which is the absolute only result of capitalism. To make matters worse the entire economy is now finance driven. Which means an incomprehensible sums of funny fake money in real circulation, through all many Wall St scams we all know about, that drive the “market.” They’re sinking that into housing.
The whole thing’s built in quicksand.
But we’re the ones who are drowning.
