Good morning Baby, good morning all. The answer to last week's riddle is as follows. The judges would have accepted 3 possible answers. If you had any of these three, you win our grand prize. And now, the answers to:
What do The Michael Shelley Show and a Chinese Spy Balloon have in common.
They both soar high above the competition.
They are both huge, and extremely sophisticated.
They are both move slowly, but are incredibly light on their feet.
Honorable mentions:
They are both enemies of the state. (Lottie)
They are both big in Montana (Myron)

And this is our grand prize. An opportunity to watch this! Even if you didn’t win, you can now. So to speak.

David Marks and Carl's musical tastes were much closer than Al Jardine's, David and Carl were into Rock and roll, Chuck Berry, Dick Dale, etc and Jardine was a stone-cold folk musician obsessed with the Kingston Trio. The fact Al plays stand-up bass on their very first recordings says it all about the influences each rhythm guitarist brought to the group. David's dad Elmer was their de facto tour manager in those early days, driving them to their gigs and schlepping gear.

Think I first heard Marshall on that station (NEW), at least on Vin Scelsa's show. I'd just moved to NYC (from the burbs) when his 1st came out & it was like the soundtrack of that summer....plus his brother (& drummer) also lived in our the building (along with Johnny Ramone, but that's another story). Saw MC at My Father's Place, & later at a party for a now-defunct rock magazine at the Ritz (as it was called then). Probably saw him in the last days of CBGBs when a lot of performers returned to do shows....I think he did an ABBA tune then.

I think Bacharach was the type of arranger who wrote nearly everything for the musicians. Like Thom Bell with the Philly Soul sessions in the 70's. I'm sure even Vinnie Bell's "chick chicks" were scored out because they're so wildly off the beat sometimes but they fit the arrangement perfectly. Like Walk On By

I saw that too! Very enjoyable. Nowhere Man is the closest the Beatles got to trying to copy an LA studio pop session. Brian Wilson, Byrds, etc. Then George did it outright on "If I Needed Someone". Nowhere Man is pure LA 1965 pop, and that treble-heavy Fender guitar was one of the trademarks. Thanks in part to Carl and David Marks back in '62-'63!

@dennis diken: Sadly, I only got to know Vinnie late in life and dimensia was in full force. He had moments of coherence, but most of the time he wasn't too communicative. I've tried to speak with people who worked with him for the Boography Doug Tulloch and I are trying to put together, but many people have passed (Angelo Badalamente and Bucky Pizzarelli for example) and the people who are still alive (Frankie Valli and Tommy James) aren't interested. I plan to speak with John Tropea, Trade Martin, Charlie Caellelo and a few others, but it's tough as people are busy, ill or "unavailable". Vinnie didn't want a bio and couldn't have helped if he did...

To this day that guitar intro makes me smile and maybe gasp a little. Good God what a song.

Speaking as a huge Costello fan, yes, Edmunds' version is way better. Costello's (which is on various b-sides/rarities collections) sounds like a demo, don't think he even sings the whole thing.

This song is pure heaven, and I had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. B about five years ago. He was generous of spirit and totally plugged in, and sent me three tickets for his show at the Carolina Theater. This never happened with any other person I interviewed. A mensch.

It may be a bonus cut on GH, but it wasn't on there originally. It was a b-side & was first (at least in the U.S.) on that "Taking Liberties" collection. Couldn't figure out why Costello didn't emphasize the melody like Edmunds did.

Regarding "My Sharona" royalties: I had a client in the late 1990s who was the co-writer of "It Never Rains in Southern California" and "The Air That I Breathe". Back then, he was earning half a million in royalties from those two songs each year.
