Last week was my first Jonathan Richman show. My wife and I had an absolutely wonderful time. We were in the second row, so great view, and sound was fine (even when he stepped away from the mics and was just THERE.). Fuzz standing in for horns.

The stunner so far is John's "Yellow Submarine" demo before it became a kids' singalong. That one never made the bootlegs as far as I know

and by alone i mean with a tape-op and engineer.

I like this better w/o the horns

gf2002:

Martin gets more credit for that than he should, Geoff Emerick was the man behind Revolver's sound and mixes. 20 years old

@clark: right, but why bother if it wasn't going to move forward. Is it a stereo mix for the new set maybe?

Geoff Emerick's first job as Engineer ?? While 'Normal' Norman Smith graduated to Producer for - the earliest PinkFloyd.

gf2002:

That fuzz standing in for horns was the same thing the Stones did on Satisfaction, they pictured a sax playing that classic fuzz line but did guitar instead

Hey, Mikey & gang! Splendid show, thanks! Bun E once introduced me to Roy Wood! What a moment that was!

capital required a stereo mix. they paid for them.

Of course - historically interesting as Fuzz was first perhaps intended to emulate horns.

Yeah more Stereo market in the USA early on they say. What kids had Stereos in 1966 ?
  12:49pm
gf2002:

That was Geoff Emerick's first full album, his first sessions I believe were Rain and Paperback Writer, and the first Revolver session he engineered was Tomorrow Never Knows which won the Beatles over and convinced them to stay with Abbey Road. They wanted to record at Stax at one point prior to that

It was also used early on for pure novelty effect -- probably a bit of both, @RR

I like to think that Otis Redding's version realized the vision of Satisfaction Keef had had in his sleep.

Never heard an Otis cover of that that didn't absolutely smoke.

gf2002:

Stereo was an afterthought for rock/pop in 1966, once the mono masters were cut, usually it was just the engineer who ran a stereo mix. That changed in '67 drastically.

Yes! Geoff's book is terrific, the only drawback was he took some heat for being hard on George Harrison's guitar abilities at times

Mono albums were also a buck or two cheaper than their stereo counterparts until '68 or so, by then mono was all but dead for albums.

In the Beatles podcast community - Emerick is exalted as Engineer ...but considered a questionable source even as first-hand witness.

Some of the fan communities might think Emerick was taking credit away from George Martin, but I kind of lean toward Emerick's accounts. During the Pepper era he was actually there in the studio more than George Martin recording those tracks
