Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

Avatar 2:27pm northguineahills:

Heya Dave!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Dave Sewelson:

ngh!
Avatar 2:35pm Linda Lee:

wow....... blowing minds to this day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Dave Sewelson:

yeah Linda
Avatar 2:37pm Linda Lee:

my understanding was, Hendrix was becoming *very* interested in shamanic healing through music when he left us. imagine the power he might have commanded to help our spirits today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm coelacanth∅:

Fuckin' Machine gun
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm Jeff Golick:

Greetings, Dave, and welcome, Michael! I dig the Wimberly trio record "Beneath Tones Floor."
Avatar 2:39pm northguineahills:

Miles originally wanted Hendrix in his band, then fate intervened....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm coelacanth∅:

Linda he really resented audiences wanting him to play all the "hits". he wanted to go places and wanted his fans to go with him
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm coelacanth∅:

Miles wanted lots of money -UP FRONT! -before he'd work with Jimi
Avatar 2:41pm Linda Lee:

sure! that's an artist and a creator. there's never time to waste.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm coelacanth∅:

... it probably would've happened though, eventually; and wouldn't blown minds
Avatar 2:42pm Linda Lee:

imagine some friction though..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm coelacanth∅:

("would've blown minds")
Avatar 2:43pm Linda Lee:

Jimi seems to have chafed a little bit in controlled situations.
Avatar 2:43pm Linda Lee:

the bombs bursting right there as they would over Bethel!
Avatar 2:44pm duke:

Howdy Dave and Michael
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Dave Sewelson:

duke!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm coelacanth∅:

he imagined everything through, musically, i think, so he wanted to control those situations so to realise his vision. he would've had to relax a bit to work with Miles.
Avatar 2:46pm Linda Lee:

yes & i'm guessing the same was true of Miles, ..
Avatar 2:48pm Linda Lee:

actually, i feel one of the best guitarists of the early 70s was a woman fortunate enough to watch Jimi play closely.. after which she brought sounds from her guitar that *no one* was pulling out at the time. her name is June Millington; with her sister Jean they headed the first all-female band to record an album: Fanny. watching videos of her playing at the time is a revelation.
Avatar 2:49pm Linda Lee:

she was *guided* in her craft by Jimi for sure. the fact that the label didn't know how to market the band is the reason they're not better known now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm fred:

Hello Dave and all. Is that Max Roach looking more interested in what/who's on stage that the award he's presented?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm coelacanth∅:

Linda it seems so to me. i think others here may be more qualified to say. i don't know that much about Miles... but he did loosely plan out instrumentation -but leaving lots of room to improvise within those structures.
Avatar 2:51pm duke:

@Linda Lee I was just listening to the Millington sisters and their band Fanny. They could really rock.
Avatar 2:51pm Linda Lee:

yes. i think they were amazing.
Avatar 2:52pm Linda Lee:

@coel ~ that might have worked out then! a match made only in heaven alas..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm doctorjazz:

Hi folks!
Avatar 2:53pm Linda Lee:

hey dr j :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm coelacanth∅:

i like fanny (double entendre intended!) but i don't know it that well.
i'm surprised they were the first all-female band with a record.
Avatar 2:55pm Linda Lee:

the first with a full-length album. yes. 1969, i believe. there were other women who'd done singles, but never an album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm coelacanth∅:

i heard fanny on wfmu within the past month or so but i've forgotten what show
Avatar 2:56pm northguineahills:

@LL: Millington Sisters: bookmarked in my brain, thanks!
  2:57pm Matt lavelle:

Hi Mike and Dave!
Avatar 2:57pm northguineahills:

errr.... Millington Sisters (weird autocarrot).
Avatar 2:57pm Linda Lee:

David Bowie had a great respect for them. he stated to Rolling Stone in 95, i think, that they were as important as any band, ever, phenomenally ~ they were only ahead of their time.
yes, ngh, look for videos on youtube. best to see them perform.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm coelacanth∅:

Linda -wfmu.org...
live set from 1971 on Joe Belock's show
Avatar 2:59pm Linda Lee:

oh yes!! fantastic!!
Avatar 3:03pm northguineahills:

fred w/ better visual acumen then I (and I've seen Max Roach live).
Avatar 3:03pm Linda Lee:

they did a fantastic cover of Cream's 'Badge' that should've been part of that set. that's on youtube.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm coelacanth∅:

we talkin' about the sesame street version?!
Avatar 3:06pm Linda Lee:

not yet..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm coelacanth∅:

...the letter "U"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm WR:

Beautiful event you did for Max Roach.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm fred:

@ngh: I'm jealous
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm coelacanth∅:

i'm going to guess Michael WimberlyWimberley, since i have nothing else to go on
Avatar 3:09pm Linda Lee:

i'm seeing it was Clifford Brown arranging.
  3:09pm Matt lavelle:

Richie Powell
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm WR:

Without Google I would guess Tad Dameron did the arrangement, he was working with i think i remember.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm coelacanth∅:

...cheaters!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm fred:

I was given a copy of Max Roach's "Drums Unlimited" years ago when I left a job, and that's one of the best gifts I ever got (I hadn't even heard of him at the time)
Avatar 3:12pm Linda Lee:

don't think Mr Wimberly was old enough to do that arranging, Ccoel..
Avatar 3:13pm Linda Lee:

man .. listen to that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm coelacanth∅:

i was kidding!
(and do i have to keep calling him "WimberlyWimberly"?!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm doctorjazz:

Brown-Roach Inc had a nice way rearranging standards that were very familiar by placing the acc-SENT on the ;wrong" sy-LA-ble.
Avatar 3:15pm Linda Lee:

totally phenomenal!!!
Avatar 3:15pm Linda Lee:

there's that accent shift.
Avatar 3:17pm Linda Lee:

wow!! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm fred:

@coel: Depends, do you mean the head dean of percussive drumming affairs at the Department of Redundancy Department?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm WR:

Saw Max Roach doing solo set in 1985. I stood there a few few away mesmerized. He wasn't doing full set, just high-hat and snare.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm coelacanth∅:

the thrushes are Amazing! like beautiful machines
Avatar 3:22pm Linda Lee:

oh yes.. nothing like the singing of our wild relatives. i'm pretty sure we learned song from them.
i love the thrushes too. they do a nice reverb here. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm coelacanth∅:

fred haha! fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm chresti:

I LOVE this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm coelacanth∅:

when i first moved up here i lived in a tent in the wood and a particular bird awoke me every day. i recorded it but even so it was years (pre-www, for me) before i found out it was a wood thrush.
Avatar 3:26pm Linda Lee:

this piece reminds me of the frogs singing down at the creek here, evenings..
Avatar 3:28pm Linda Lee:

our thrushes seem to sing evenings, not mornings! some of the last songs before dark. i'm not sure why this is so.
Avatar 3:31pm Linda Lee:

very nice sounds!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm fred:

From mid-spring to mid-fall my alarm clocks are birds. Magpies these days (there are plenty of pigeons, but their calls don't work). Used to be crows, but they left years ago. A few have been back these past months, I hope that's a trend. I love crows
  3:35pm Jim Ryan:

Wonderful program today, Dave. Thank you, Michael
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm coelacanth∅:

that's cool fred. so many people don't like crows.
-maybe they're intimidated because the crows are probably smarter than they are!
Avatar 3:39pm Linda Lee:

haha! i like the crows. i feel toward them as i would a human neighbor. that's the kind of presence they have.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm doctorjazz:

WR, got to see Max Roach very late in his life, but he was past being able to be the Max Roach he had always been on drums. It was kinda sad, but I was still glad to catch him (other artists I saw when they were very past their prime include Earl Fatah Hines, Sonny Stott, and Andres Segovia).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm fred:

@coel: the crows left soon after a slide was removed from a playground downstairs. I don't think it's a coincidence, I sometimes saw them playing on it (sliding and taking off just before its end)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm coelacanth∅:

yeah Linda they watch us... and i think they've got us pretty well figured-out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm coelacanth∅:

hahaha that's awesome fred!
Avatar 3:45pm Linda Lee:

sure! & if we respect them, they respect us. there goes one now..
Avatar 3:47pm Linda Lee:

oh dear. we're not getting you playing together. you cut each other out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Dave Sewelson:

the internet is editing
Avatar 3:49pm Linda Lee:

is that how you mean it?
Avatar 3:49pm northguineahills:

@dr. jazz: it was 2005 when I saw Max Roach, but I still loved it...

I saw Marshall Allen a few years, but, I still danced....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm WR:

For artists of that level doctorjazz, always a wonder to experience them.
Avatar 3:53pm northguineahills:

errr... a few years ago (2016)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm doctorjazz:

@ngh-he passed in 2007, so it must have been around then. I was glad I got to see him, but I think I wasn't aware of how he was doing physically, and didn't expect it. But, yes, still glad I caught the legend.
Avatar 3:53pm northguineahills:

(well, he [Allen] also danced)
Avatar 3:54pm northguineahills:

@dr. jazz: Roach was playing w/ Marilyn Crispell, but I can't remember who else he was playing w/...
Avatar 3:55pm Linda Lee:

beautiful sounds, Dave ~
Avatar 3:56pm Linda Lee:

i had a bear passs my chair by the window yesterday ~ didn't even know it ~ but it gave us a little scat on the way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm doctorjazz:

Some folks defy time-Benny Carter kept playing past 90 years of age, frequently in the NY area, and it was always great to see him. (He did play both trumpet and sax when he was younger, and had too give up trumpet when he got older, but the sac playing always remained strong).
Avatar 3:58pm Linda Lee:

*thank you gentlemen!! *
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm WR:

You guys made it work. Thank you Michael & Dave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm doctorjazz:

Crispell and Roach-that would have been cool (Roach did participate in many unusual duets in his later career).
Never saw Crispell, for that matter...
Avatar 3:59pm Linda Lee:

we *love* afropop! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm doctorjazz:

And, as usual, loved the love Free World duet.
Avatar 4:00pm northguineahills:

digdug that Michael & Dave!

LL speaks fir us! (at least me)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm WR:

A few weeks ago, some told you of a setting to keep zoom or whatever from muting you, so both players can be heard at same time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm doctorjazz:

We had a bear in the yard of a friend down the block-it took off, who knows where.
Avatar 4:02pm northguineahills:

Daniel Carter is 75 and still tours, and most of the time sleeps on couches and floors. I'm not sure how his back takes it!
Avatar 4:02pm Linda Lee:

as long as there's a place to take off to, they will!
Avatar 4:02pm northguineahills:

(or how his dear wife takes his absence)
Avatar 4:03pm Linda Lee:

wow! Sun Ra class! :-)
Avatar 4:05pm Linda Lee:

i was *so* lucky to see Sun Ra & the Arkestra at a small nyc venue in 78 or so. just fantastic. an amazing experience.
Avatar 4:06pm Linda Lee:

ooh! wow. beautiful!!!!!!
Avatar 4:07pm northguineahills:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm WR:

Avatar 4:09pm Linda Lee:

Avatar 4:09pm northguineahills:

I saw the Arkestar a few times, 2004 and 2016, Marshall Allen kills it huge!
Avatar 4:09pm northguineahills:

Arkestra (I give up on spelling).
Avatar 4:10pm Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm doctorjazz:

The Arkestra was around the NY area in the 80s and 90s, often in punk clubs. Had the pleasure of catching them a number of times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm fred:

I miss live music. But I skipped a show this week because I don't want to get into arguments about masks and people coughing on me to make a point (weird thing is over here it's a lefty thing)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm coelacanth∅:

this is so good!

Avatar 4:22pm northguineahills:

I remember Zebulon, a fave place of mine!
Avatar 4:23pm northguineahills:

errr...Sun Ra and Drexiya used Afrofurism as their motto, like Michael's album (got excited by the mention of Zebulon).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Gina Bacon:

I saw them with some high school friends, probably '78...one girl got kind of freaked out when June Tyson led them out into the audience...she had to wait for us outside.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm doctorjazz:

Me too, Fred! There's an outdoor live show not far from where I live in Joisey (Richard Thompson is playing at Woodbridge High School, outside, I believe). I think I'll go, but if it's not done in a safe way, will take off quickly.
Avatar 4:31pm Linda Lee:

were we at the same show, Gina? the procession around the club tables was just fantastic. having the music move through us that way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm Gina Bacon:

Maybe, Linda Lee! It was a club in the Village, on West 4th I think!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm Gina Bacon:
