Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:37pm McGroovey:

When I was a kid, I was puzzled by that line in "Purple Haze": 'scuse me while I kiss this guy. It wasn't yet the era when guys kissing guys was culturally mainstream.

I remember seeing Elvis Hitler at CBGB in the mid-'90s. I was there to see someone else, but I thought they were great. I ran right out and bought the only record of theirs I could find. I should get that out some time. I remember one song I loved, maybe? "Crunch, Kill, Destroy" or something like that. I don't remember who I was there to see. Possibly Gaye Bykers on Acid?

Ah the Blue Chieftains. fond memories of a show at the Continental that ended with them playing Free Bird at 3AM.
  12:58pm Little Fyodor:

Oh wow thanks for playing that Creedence! GREAT stuff! Heh, CCR was my first "favorite band", when * was 11!! (Till Sabbath replaced them when I was probably 14!) I had the album Bootleg originally appeared on (Bayou Country, their 2nd) and I had NO IDEA what that song was about!! Not being able to understand the words didn't help! But of course I have a different perspective on the whole issue now! Reading the lyrics online and understanding them all for the first time I'm impressed with how clever they are! All about how stuff is better when it's illegal (or you can't have it for some other reason)! Nice!!

June says that when they got to the UK & heard the guys chanting the name from on stage, she thought: wow, they love us! :-)

this set is sick Joe! Thanks!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Handy Haversack:

Holy smokes, this set is blowing me away! Complete novice here. So freaking good.
Avatar 1:29pm Roberto:

Oh dayum, I didn't know they had appeared on the other Joe's program. I'll check out the archives.
Avatar 1:29pm Linda Lee:

by the way, Jean is now struggling hard to recover from stroke & get to playing again. there's a gofundme site devoted to her healing, organized by June. any good wishes & help is loved & appreciated. www.gofundme.com...

Wow! That was masterful! Thanks for introducing me to Fanny.

Thanks for the Fanny, great set!

enjoyed being here - gotta get out and (try to) run some errands for my parents. HANG IN THERE, all!
Avatar 1:32pm Linda Lee:

hey spodiodi!! greetings!
Avatar 1:32pm spodiodi:

safe passage, clarke
  1:33pm elg:

They were played a lot on prog/college fm at the time. "Peculiar" was the big hit but the rest of the disc was consistent. Hated the name too and thought it was a Geffen style marketing trick. The interview is appreciated. That's why 'FMU is so fine
  1:34pm Tim from LH:

Great show so far! We need The People’s Champ now more than ever!
Avatar 1:35pm Carmichael:

I saw them at a bowling alley bar in '74 or so. I was still in high school.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:35pm bannedinjapan:

Honestly amazed Todd-o-phonic could recognize my name before - he never seems to spot it on all those pledge cards! Maybe time for a new prescription? (Great Fanny set, Joe! Thanks for playing the CWs! And hi Jack, luv ya bud!)
Avatar 1:36pm Linda Lee:

@elg ~ no, that wasn't Geffen. the band was looking for a good, evocative female name. someone had an aunt fanny, i think. so no more 'wild honey'.*then* the marketing dept ran with it.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Artie:

Good to hear your voice, Joe!
Avatar 1:42pm Linda Lee:

you have my envy, Carmichael! i passed the summer in LA in 72 ~ missed the band, though, to my chagrin. copped all the albums though! adored them straightaway. so to speak.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Phillippe Bastille:

Hey Linda Lee! Long time! How are you?!!
  1:47pm Frank P:

This show is on fire today!
  1:48pm choggie:

Just watched a viddy of the acid tragedy of Vince Taylor....Some folks simply shouldn't ever take recreational drugz

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Linda Lee pretty much the same, but I have a fire extinguisher, so it'll all be good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Doug Schulkind:

Three Chord Monte=essential service!
  1:53pm elg:

Linda- Gef was just an example... don't know the logistics, but that biz always creeped me out. Back then dudes always co-opting things that women did. That just generally used and abused talent and tossed people out if they didn't fizz out physically. Will have to check this thread out later. Thanx
Avatar 1:56pm Linda Lee:

good work Phillippe! :-)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:57pm McGroovey:

So I asks myself, where can I find that Steve Martin song (aside from in the WFMU archives now, and maybe on YouTube). It turns out that the answer to that question is, it's on a CD called "Stories Untold - The Very Best Of Stories", if y'r dying to have it.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Hoboken Jack:

Hey Dennis and LH Tim! Always happy to hear Pernice!
Avatar 1:57pm mikecmusic:

Wow, I got a Joe Belock shout out! Awesome show today, thanks for playing Pernice Brothers.
  1:57pm P-90:

Superb show today. And that Fanny set was a real time-travel experience.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Hoboken Jack:

Oh hello HP Ken!
Avatar 1:59pm Linda Lee:

elg ~ absolutely. brutal business, bringing joy. *especially* for women & PoC (the Millingtons being both). June finally had to save herself.
Avatar 1:59pm Linda Lee:

thanks for a beautiful show, Joe.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:59pm McGroovey:

Oh, but it also turns out that that Stories CD is about as expensive as the Steve Martin 7". Oh, well. I thought it would be a good tip.
  2:00pm KP in DC:

Have you mentioned Alan Merril, Joe? Great guy played the East Village, which is where I sorta lived.
Avatar 2:03pm Joe B:

no but i am aware. i don't want to get bogged down in death tributes. i mention steve because he will not get coverage anywhere else
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Hoboken Jack:

Hello Mike C! (Follow him on YouTube!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Phillippe Bastille:

So where are you living now Linda?
Avatar 2:08pm mikecmusic:

Hey Jack, thanks! Clearly I don't hang out in the chat here often enough.
  2:11pm KP in DC:

Yeah, I only thought of it because he was sort of in the Left Banke. He was the lead singer of a reunion but it never worked out. He did cover “Renee” on own. I saw a nice video of it yesterday.
Avatar 2:12pm mikecmusic:

Getting serious Vin Scelsa vibes from this set. Very cool.
Avatar 2:12pm Joe B:

yeah ive seen that, very cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Santos L. Halper:

@McGroovey: wow, when I got mine (couple years ago?) it was very cheap, and a nice collection.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:15pm OnTheTrain:

Hey Hey Joe B. I just want to say is very cool that there are no planes in the sky. I have seen and heard 1 in two weeks going into LGA. Usually is every 30 seconds till about 11pm . Coronna!
  2:17pm elg:

Linda-As a kid in Fla 'burbs we all had all these pie eyed ideas about what that big time music gig was about. Really naive trash thinking. People still maintain some of that now incredibly due to slavery to the pixels in media. A lot of real art was lost in the corp shuffle for $$$ but at least people like you are around to straighten out the story line behind the hype. 'Will re-read this thread. Take care, gary b
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm nickybones:

woo, WPC!
  2:21pm John L:

Listening to you, and WFMU in general, helps me grounded. Gotta get that Pernice Brothers record!!!
Avatar 2:23pm spodiodi:

  2:26pm P-90:

Allen was an acquaintance of mine, we had good friends in common and so spent some time with him over the years. I will say that he was a genuinely warm, very sweet guy, an actual gentleman, and smart like few people I’ve met. Among his accomplishments, he went to Japan in the early 70’s and became one of the very first “Western Japanese celebrities”, a successful musician and a tv personality. A very tricky feat that very few folks have pulled off, and he did it before almost anyone.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:27pm McGroovey:

@Santo yeah, I shoulda gotten that years ago. I love the Left Banke. I just wasn't sure if I would like Stories. But it's worth it for that song alone, even if the rest of it sucks (which I'm guessing it doesn't).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm Gaylord Fields:

TCM (this show) and TCM (the cable channel) complement each other very well when it comes to providing a visual backdrop to music!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:30pm McGroovey:

@P-90 I also have a common friend w/ Alan Merrill, who also said lots of nice things about him. I never met him as far as I know, though his face looked familiar, so maybe I have, somewhere, in passing.
Avatar 2:30pm mikecmusic:
