Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

Hello Free Worlders!
The latest Downtown Music Gallery email/flyer linked to this show!
About to get my hair cut for the 1st time since March (think I'll lose all my powers?)
Avatar 2:27pm Sem:

Dave, Dave, Dave, man. Glad you're here. Glad I'm here. Glad everyone ^ is here.

Sem and Linda...yeah yeah
  2:30pm Jeff g. via app:

Hi there, beautiful people. I got my hair cut this past week, @doc. Don’t think I lost any powers, other than the ability to draw stares for my hair’s verticality.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm WR:

Frank, your description of sacred harp singing triggered me to read about again, interesting perspective for points of departure for improvising.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Dave Sewelson:

Jeff is Powerful!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Dave Sewelson:

Jeff, wassamatter, your barber won't cut your hair any longer?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm WR:

Always good to have your instrument ready at hand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm Dave Sewelson:

WR...alway ready
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm doctorjazz:

OK, seem to have survived the haircut pretty intact. They aren't trimming beards (which I had decided I didn't want to let them do anyway, would have to take the mask off). Maybe I'll just try to grow my beard like Dave's (wonder how long that would take...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Dave Sewelson:

My beard's birthday is July 24, 2005
  3:16pm DavidJ:

I thought you played slide saxophone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Doug Schulkind:

Dave, your mic level is considerably lower than Frank's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Andrew Waterloo:

So, I'm not the only one who reads review after the experience
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Doug Schulkind:

Very much better, my brother!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm WR:

Better now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm Doug Schulkind:

It takes a village, Dave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm WR:

Music from Frank's box coming now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm doctorjazz:

I read reviews of albums i haven't heard just to alert me to records/artists I don't know about. It's just impossible to purchase everything that comes out to check out for yourself (Lord knows I've tried). It's even hard to know WHO to check out, what new artists have hit the scene, etc. FMU has definitely become a big part of exposing me to stuff I pick up, though. Thomas Conrad (writes for Stereophile and other places), for instance, has written reviews that have alerted me to European jazz artists I may never have come across (and, I've found that I generally like what he likes).
(Downtown Music Gallery's email includes reviews of new arrivals).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm WR:

Thank you Frank & Dave. Great songs and sounds today.
  4:58pm Frank:

Hey WR!
The Joanna Mattrey tune was off her latest release from Relative pitch, i love how she channels Henry Flynt vibes and uses a Stroh, which is a vintage derivation of a violin with a metal horn that comes out of the resonating body!
  4:59pm Frank:

The JBL is also from a Relative Pitch title, amazing band! Luke Stewart is one of the best bassists in the game!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Dave Sewelson:

Thanks all you lissners!
  5:00pm Frank:

Horse Lords are one of my favorite working bands, and all the members have amazing side projects!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Franco Twinkie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm WR:

  5:01pm Frank:

Charmaine works with me at DMG now and is so inspirational and a hardworker. Most creative vocalist of my generation!
