Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Webhamster Henry:

Working your way toward S.O.B. and Victor/Victoria
Avatar 9:35am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

My understanding is that in fact @ 1st Record Co.s didn't want their records on radio cuz they thot that people wouldn't buy them if they could hear them for free. Eventually the promotional potential dawned on them...but the Old Codger can fill in the gaps for us.
  9:35am yerfriendpaul:

Aww, too bad. I love Mary Poppins.
  9:36am queems:

but they go in the chalk!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am TristaC.LadyCaveBrat:

Mary Poppins was the neighboring set to A Hard Day's Night. They were filming at the same time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Webhamster Henry:

I was wondering if anyone had ever done a fan-remix of Mary Poppins with an actual Cockney voicing and singing Bert?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am WoodsOfNH:

I still haven't seen The Sound of Music. I can count the number of musicals I like on one finger.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am David (in London):

Tough to stomach? Joe, that accent has given generations of Brits such pleasure and joy. It was untouchable for decades until Keanu Reeves gave it a go in Coppola's 'Dracula'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am TristaC.LadyCaveBrat:

@Queems YES! the Chalk!! they go IN it! <3
  9:37am yerfriendpaul:

@queems - YES the chalk!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Handy Haversack:

Woods, which finger?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Stanley:

Orrrite Meary?
  9:38am John L:

Dick Van Dyke, when accepting an award in England, publicly apologized for his Cockney accent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am WoodsOfNH:

@Handy Ha! Obviously, the pinky on my right hand.
  9:39am yerfriendpaul:

Joe, have you ever seen Singing In The Rain? No Julie Andrews but an incredible movie with amazing music/dancing/entertainment
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am WoodsOfNH:

Why are the Brits so much better at doing American accents? I mean, I honestly did not know that Minnie Driver wasn't American until only a few years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Stanley:

You don't come accross that many people called Dick, nowadays. Shame.

Yerfriend - my favourite musical.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Gord:

Boo/hiss, Joe, re. Mary Poppins. True, Julie Andrew/MP is practically a supporting character in her own movie — but there's a lot to at least admire and appreciate, filmmaking-wise. (The SFX were absolutely state of the art for the time. The songwriting is fantastic — for its purposes. And, D.VD has cheerfully embraced his admittedly awful accent.)
  9:40am queems:

i don’t like how gene kelly dances :( but i will watch fred astaire all day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Gord:

Also @Joe — Why Julie Andrews, of all people?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Jim the Poet:

Yip. I slept late.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Threemoons:

Loving the board this AM. When I was a wee one I had the Mary Poppins record on a lot at home on my Fisher Price record player. While we're talking bad accents and musicals, how about My Fair Lady?
Avatar 9:41am Joe McG:

@yfp: Oh, yeah, love "Singin' in the Rain"! @JohnL: Cool! By the way, I adore Dick Van Dyke, think he's the greatest. Not especially in MP. @Gord: Just didn't do it for me, I'm afraid. Felt stilted. Grumpy dad transformation in "SOM" much more convincing. @queems: Love 'em both! Fred's grace, Gene's athleticism.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Threemoons:

And for whatever reason I love the Sound of Music.
Avatar 9:41am βrian:

@queems: You mean that guy who danced with Ginger Rogers?
Avatar 9:41am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I thot Minnie was doing a *bad* Brit accent...so back of the class for me...
Thot Dick dancing w/ cartoon penguins was interesting. Transitional period for Disney perhaps? Walt was anti-unionist all kinds stuff anyhow...
  9:42am (another) Patrick in Hoboken:

Really enjoyed that version of “Summertim as I was working out in the sun-dappled Church Square Park in hoboken this morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am David (in London):

Dick Van Dyke is awesome in 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang'. When he sings Hushaby Mountain, it's a stonewall classic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am WoodsOfNH:

Favorite movie with Minnie Driver: Big Night (also one of my favorite movies ever)
Avatar 9:42am Brian in UK:

Hey Joe. It is late March at the end of June here today. Grey skies do not lift the spirits unless in a glass.
Avatar 9:43am Joe McG:

@Patrick: Sounds like a lovely place to be! Glad I could soundtrack it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Handy Haversack:

There are many squicky things about the class consciousness and the imperial pride in MP, I always thought. At least SoM knows who the bad guys are.

But like Woods, I'm just not a fan of the genre.
Avatar 9:44am βrian:

I mean, is it musical or is it theater?
Avatar 9:45am Joe McG:

@Threemoons: Haven't seen "My Fair Lady" yet. That's next!
Avatar 9:45am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Ray Harryhausen Centennial Today

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Stanley:

Altogether now "Just you wait Mister Riggins, just you wait"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am David (in London):

RRN63 - Same here. He made so many childhoods absolutely magical. I saw him interviewed live some years ago and he was so engaging and generous. Top gent. Good call on raising that.
  9:47am mister Dobalina:

This music is really working for me, especially since I'm beach side.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Handy Haversack:

Rev Rab: Yeah! Harryhausen! We watched Clash of the Titans pretty recently ... but that's no reason not to watch it again tonight to celebrate the legacy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Stanley:

@Handy - MP was filmed when everyone knew their place.
  9:48am mister Dobalina:

Could use more steel drum though.
Avatar 9:49am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Really I wanted to BE Ray Harryhausen if I grew up - which didn't happen...
Avatar 9:49am Joe McG:

Apparently a lot of steel bands liked to cover Fela, which I didn't know until this morning.
  9:49am Rachel Bo Bachel:

Joe McG Rose (my 4 y.o. daughter) wants to know why you don’t like Mary poppins. I missed it so maybe you explained? Rose is listening to your show while she is cleaning up the HUGE mess she made! Threemoons we watch my fair lady all the time in our house!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Webhamster Henry:

The Harryhausen documentary shows his lifelong passion for stop motion, his great friendship with Ray Bradbury, and the mind boggling work animating the Hydra'a snakes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am David (in London):

Handy, that's top quality Burgess Meredith too.

When I went to the Andromeda Rocks in Jaffa it was very disappointing that a huge Harryhausen Kraken didn't appear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am YETI BOB:

A few months ago my wife mentioned Harryhausen and couldn't believe I had never heard of him. So we watched Jason and the Argonauts, with its crazy skeleton fight at the end! Very educational. (Then this inspired us to watch Pasolini's "Medea", but that's another story)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Handy Haversack:

@David, had you prepared an appropriate sacrifice?
  9:52am John L:

Joe McG:Also a big Dick Van Dyke fan, especially his tv. show. Love Fred and Gene, but I give Gene the edge. If you haven't already, check out An American In Paris and It's Always Fair Weather.
  9:52am Rachel Bo Bachel:

Oh I scrolled up Joe, now I see. I think my husband relates to George Banks! At least a small part of him does
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am YETI BOB:

good morning, hi everyone, happy Monday! (where did the weekend go?)
Avatar 9:53am TDK60:

Off topic> Just saw a great old Brit film, 1936's 'Rembrandt' with Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester. It's found free online.
Avatar 9:53am Joe McG:

@RachelBR: It's a little hard to explain, but one thing was the look of it. It felt so airless to me, so closed in, esp. after "SOM." I didn't get the character of MP (I've never read the books)...she seemed a little robotic. In "SOM," Maria is busting out with feelings about life and that was so infectious. The songs were OK, but the songs is "SOM" are so much better. I think if I'd seen MP first, I might have liked it more.
  9:54am Rachel Bo Bachel:

Threemoons we love Sound of Music too! And we just watched The Music Man a few weeks ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am YETI BOB:

((that's a rhetorical question. Actually I know where the weekend went - garden work and mojito slushies))
Avatar 9:56am Brian in UK:

What is a weekend?
  9:56am ami ad:

@D(iL):Did you go to AbuLafia and Dr.Shakshuka too, while in Jaffa?
Avatar 9:58am βrian:

@BUK: To someone who's retired, you mean?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Gord:

@Rachel BoB — Yes, I too watch Mary Poppins with my heart tied to George Banks. He's really the character who has the "arc." And re. D. VD — forget the awful cockney accent. Every facet of his huge talent is on display in Mary Poppins.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am David (in London):

Hey Yeti Bob How are you?

ami ad - The latter, but not the former. Man, it was scorchio, too. I was actually wearing a WFMU t-shirt, and an American guy stopped me for a quick chat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am melinda:

I would have been up for another round of Bette Davis Eyes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Jim the Poet:

I got Steve Buscemi eyes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Chris S:

The good part of Mary Poppins is the anarchist chimney sweeps trying to end the British Empire
  10:02am Rachel Bo Bachel:

Ah, I know what you mean Joe! It looks like it’s filmed entirely in a studio/soundstage. And yes I see what you mean about the Mary poppins character. I think of her like an angel, which I’ve been told are like robots (I know that sounds crazy, but that’s how they explained them to us in Yeshiva!)! I am now trying to explain the phrase “two-dimensional” to rose :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Handy Haversack:

I thought Abulafia was a medieval cryptographer? Also a place?

Same here, melinda, though this is pretty sweet, too!
  10:03am ami ad:

@D(iL):I don't do Shakshuka.Man,that country is pretty much hot all the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am melinda:

I think I prefer Fred to Gene but Singin' in the Rain is a special movie.
Avatar 10:04am βrian:

Supermarket produce sections have ruined Singing in the Rain for me.
  10:04am Erin in TO:

Avatar 10:05am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Eff yeah
  10:07am Brendan:

Good morning Joe and all. Looks like I missed homeroom and first period class. But I’ll make up for it by listening extra hard these next two hours
  10:07am Rachel Bo Bachel:

I’d like to know what British ppl think of Mary poppins. It’s definitely simplistic. But also I think it’s a kids movie, and sound of music is not. I also like that song that dick van dyke sings at the end about “you’ve got to grind grind grind at that grindstone/while childhood slips like sand through a sieve.” Feel like I appreciate the movie as a parent. It makes some observations that ring true!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am annie:

yes, iam, but laundry calls; catch the other half later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Matt Fiveash:

91.1 signal went dead for about a minute- now there's music (sounds like Les Paul or something)- but much quieter, and not the same thing as what's playing on the stream.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Handy Haversack:

Static on 91.9.
Avatar 10:11am Joe McG:

@Matt: Yes, we're down terrestrially. Sounds like the transmitter back-up just kicked in. A bit early for AC to overwhelm the power grid...but maybe not! Hopefully we'll be back soon on 91.1 and 91.9.

Having coffee with my wife on the deck, looking out over all the flowers I planted yesterday (I cleared out a bed approx 1m x 6m that was choked with weeds and locust tree roots, now it's coreopsis and allium and a few other perennials, purples yellows and pinks that I hope will establish themselves). Maybe going to buy a kayak this afternoon if I can get enough work done this morning.

Hello all - Thanks for all the updates on our multiple transmitter problemos. WFMU 91.1 fm is now airing PLAN D, the ipod in the transmitter shack, programmed by Scott Williams. It looks like a Verizon outage has wreaked havoc across the board, taking down four different services at one. The transmitters themselves are fine. But live audio cannot reach them

No Ami. not a 5G thing. I hope you dont believe that crap btw

@Brian, what you in the UK refer to as a "hair dryer" is called a "toaster" here in the states; what you call a "toaster" is called a "bachelor's oven". Truly, two nations separated by a common language.
