Rob, it just occurred to me that you must have ESP. As I'm listening to the show, I'm reading a book called The Love of Stones, and right now the scene is Baghdad.

@radioronan, I owe you an e-mail, but we got distracted with Juneteenth stuff and then ... well, stuff. You know. Pix to come!

We got the hairy eyeball from several groups walking home today with our protest signs. It seems simplistic to say ... but it feels really good to come home to this music and a community that just seems to get it.

tl;dr: THANKS, ROB.

Hey Rob! Phil Rivlin here.. Glad to be listening in this evening! Trust you and Katie are doing well. Last in person for us was your Marathon show on 14 March.. 'moments' before everything shut down. Good evening everyone!!

Kate's STILL mad at me 21+ years later for not going with this awesome Turkish scholar and activist in the Kurdish oppression who was really into me. But I had already fallen for Kate and was waiting for her to lose her loser BF. But Asja was a super, super cool person who taught me a ton about what was going on with the Kurds.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:44pm

Rob I have been super digging the last couple sets, been making coffee and eating tacos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
Handy Haversack:

(This was in Ann Arbor, Rob, is why I mention.)
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:48pm

Handy, that reminds me of hearing about my dad going out with Janice Rule, before getting together with my mother, (although I don't think she was mad at him).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Rob W:

That does sound like a real Ann Arbor story Handy - and thanks chresti and hi Phil, I hope you're doing OK!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
Handy Haversack:

chresti, my dad went out with (and was friends with) Billie Holiday!! I mean, set the bar a little higher next time, Dad.

Apparently it’s always taco night at chez chresti/Franco.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:56pm

Carmichael, the Covidans, now that has a cultish ring to it. Yes, seems like it has been taco night since Franco had a bbq mishap while checking in with Marty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm
Handy Haversack:

There are worse fates, that's for sure.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:58pm

These Guisado tacos are a treat, handmade tortillas...mmmm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm

I'm ok Rob, thanks for asking.. it's been such a difficult time for everyone.. amongst other things, the isolation has really been a challenge.. WFMU has been one precious lifeline..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm

That's wild, Handy. The mother of my most recent ex was engaged to Tim Curry in the 60s. My only claim to fame is that John Kennedy Toole (Confederacy of Dunces) was my mom's English prof.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:01pm

Actually, Saturdays are usually taco nights.

Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:06pm

My dad's 2nd cousin was Red Grange. We kids would tell our friends, and they would say -"who?", us-"you know, the "Galloping Ghost', etc.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:07pm

Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:07pm

mariano: totally impressed by the John Kennedy Toole connection. Dunces is a favorite in my household.
Avatar 8:08pm

wow! love all these family/fame stories :)
and yes, @ prguitar and @ Handy -- TSP in particular and WFMU overall has been this beautiful oasis of sanity in these bizarre, often ugly times -- like therapy but WAY better!

hiya chresti!
all this taco talk and now i am hungry again, hah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm

@handy - I totally get stuff. Billie Holiday - that's royalty. @mariano Dunces is one my all time faves.
All this taco talk - I may have bump up my usual Sat scramble to huevos rancheros
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm

Aww, thanks Granny and radioronan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm
Handy Haversack:

@Mariano: Dunces! My mom taught Dunces and draft dodging in Alabama before they moved to ATL. A world classic.
Avatar 8:20pm

was reading earlier that in addition to the Solstice (which some sources state is tomorrow, June 21st?), there are a boatload of planets in retrograde -- Venus, Mercury, Saturn, Jupiter, and Pluto -- and on Monday evening, Neptune retrogrades: "leaves us floating in a haze, which is pleasant in a hammock, and tough when we''re trying to accomplish anything new." -- oh joy! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm

Handy: Yeah it was a real event in the house (and NOLA in general) when it came out. Oh, and when my mom was JKT's student, Walker Percy's daughter was her roommate at Dominican College (now part of Loyola).
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:26pm
Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

mariano: oh my, the plot thickens!
Avatar 8:28pm

@ mariano -- oh wow, so fascinating!
and DUH! once again i am realizing that i am one of the few humans on the planet who has yet to read "Dunces" -- especially considering how huge it was right after i got out of college!
(fetching library card to see if i they have a copy i could request -- they are *partially* opening this coming Monday, for returns and curbside pick-ups)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm

Making S’mores with my kids listening to TPSP. They’re shoving it down my throat like Theater of Blood. At least it ain’t dog pies
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm
Handy Haversack:

Mariano, I may have mentioned that my dad was a waiter? The dean of women and English at Agnes Scott College (in Atlanta) would always bring the Southern writing stars (Walker Percy, Eudora Welty, etc.) to his restaurant for dinner since she knew he could talk lit with them. She ended up teaching a class at my high school, and it was the one time my dad was like, "I don't like to tell you what to do much, but if you don't take her class, we're going to have to talk about why."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm

Haha! I'm afraid that's as thick or fascinating as the plot gets. They assigned dorm rooms by last name at Dominican. Still, I always envied my mom's being college-age in New Orleans in the 60s. Oh, and she lived for a bit in the same French Quarter apartment building as Jim Garrison (aka Kevin Costner in JFK).

Oh wow, Handy, that's cool! You should write a bio of your dad, sounds like a fascinating guy. Eudora Welty was the writer in residence at Sewanee, where I went my freshman year. Never saw her though, but as you can guess Sewanee English classes were full of O'Connor, Faulkner, the Percys, etc.
Avatar 8:49pm

@ Handy -- yes! you have all these cool Dad stories -- have you ever considered writing about him?
@ mariano -- again, feeling clueless! i had no idea that Toole was barely into his 30s when he committed suicide -- and he was a huge fan of Flannery O'Connor too :)
i am intrigued by The Neon Bible, will get that too when the library can do inter-library loans
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm

Thanks, Rob. What a good place to have been. Much, much appreciated.

Thanks, Skeleton.

Thanks, WFMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm

Yeah slugluv, apparently he suffered from some serious mental issues towards the end. He was known for being dapper and impeccably groomed but gradually got more and more disheveled, became paranoid, missed classes. He was supposed to have been an amazing lecturer.

Taking off, Handy? If so, have a good evening!
