I'm going to recycle some comments I made on Ridgewood Radio earlier today, ruth asked if anyone had shopped there. I found out about Record Mart before I moved to NYC. Latin percussionists friends were getting amazing Cuban records on the Egrem label from there in the 80s which is why I searched for it on my visit in 85. (Moved to NYC in 92.) It took me several tries to find them.

I'm a shy guy with not much cash so I never asked questions, would do my usual "just browsing". And turns out like you said, much of the great stuff was in drawers, closet, etc. It was poor strategy on my part because when I recently had the pleasure of meeting the Record Mart Latin music guru, Harry Sepulveda, I found that he is a really nice guy who loved discussing and sharing the music. Very friendly and helpful to me, even with my having limited knowledge.

When the 42nd / Times Square station had renovation Record Mart closed in '98. I made it a point to go visit before they closed. There was a Hispanic network TV crew there, I forget which of the two big ones from the 90s it was. A pleasant lady asked me if I had been a regular customer and what I thought about the store. I told her of my friends in Louisiana who bought lots of records by calling up and asking Harry what was new and good. And of my own delight in getting to visit it regularly once I moved to New York. She noted that I had reasonable pronunciation of the names of the musicians and titles so she asked me if I could say my story in Spanish for the cameras. Deer, headlights, road kill. But it makes me clearly remember my last visit to the old Times Square location.

Speaking of what are they doing with their stock. They were closed from 1998 to 2007, about 9 years. When they didn't reopen some where by 2003 I had given up them ever opening again. Not to raise false hope regarding this closing. This seems to be a definitive pivot by them.

Yes, I think that happened during one of the many political upheavals there. He was blind and I've heard a really grizzly story of what happend, I'm not even comfortable quoting the details... But at least the music lives on. Camionette is an awesome record. I picked it up years ago at the Times Sq subway record store down by the R train entrance, that specialized in Latin and Caribbean music. It's long gone now. Love La Lupe and her inventions like Groovy-acita. She pissed off some people with some of her mannerisms and being so wild. And then there are the many who love her. The fans love her, the latin music establishment of her time not so much.

I know, WR, and I get the value of a list-for-list's-sake, but it's not the narrative, it's the framing. Fifteen?! Utterly trivializes the incomprehensibly vast cultural work.

Ignoring the risk of false cognates, here's OED on etymology of the noun discharge. Dig this:

Senses of the French word likely to have influenced the English word include: to remove (something) (end of the 11th cent. in Old French in a gloss on Exodus 32:3 in Rashi, with reference to the children of Israel taking off gold jewellery from their bodies in order to make the golden calf), to remove a load from (a beast of burden, ship, vehicle, etc.) (a1160), to unload (cargo, passengers) (beginning of the 13th cent.), to release (a person) from a task, obligation or responsibility (c1220), to rid or free (a person) of something unwanted (first half of the 13th cent. or earlier), to release (a prisoner) from prison (c1275 or earlier), to exculpate, exonerate (a person) (c1283; a1321 or earlier used reflexively), to release (a person) from debt or a financial obligation (1287; 1291 or earlier used reflexively), to resign from or quit (an office or post) (1370 or earlier, used reflexively), to deprive or dispossess (a person) of (something) (1435), to vent or release (anger, emotion, etc.) (a1473), to dismiss (a person) from office (beginning of the 15th cent. or earlier), to fire (a firearm) (1477), (of a weapon, bomb, etc.) to go off (a1483, reflexive), (of a liquid, gas, etc.) to flow out, escape (1559).
