Hi, James!
Avatar 6:55pm LambdaCalculus:

Evening, Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Gary:

Hey there, LambdaCalculus!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Gary:

Doing another test launch of the new system tonight. Fingers crossed for a seamless transition. Let me know how the sound sounds. Is it the same as usual? Loss of quality? Better quality?
Avatar 7:02pm LambdaCalculus:

So far sounding good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm WR:

Who decides how to pronounce bodega. Has it transcended its Spanish origin. And which Spanish. Sorry, head space still in Last Ever mode.
Avatar 7:03pm hyde:

Waving hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm chresti:

Hey bodega, I remember you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Gary:

Hey there, WR and Hyde! My feeling about pronunciation is heavily informed by how the Japanese pronounce Brad Pitt
  7:07pm peter:

hi Gary & co.!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Doug Schulkind:

Sounding good so far, Gary. Your opener level was a little low. Things are humming along nicely now. Very nicely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm Gary:

Chresti, Peter, and Doug! Thank you Doug for that, I'll adjust!
Avatar 7:10pm TDK60:

Hello.

Yeah, that was a blow, LambdaC. I fear they won't be the only ones

Water battles?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm Gary:

Hey there, Tim!
Avatar 7:33pm LambdaCalculus:

Hey Tim!
Avatar 7:34pm TDK60:

Chresti, yes, Bechtel corp. was trying to privatize H2O. Indigenous and lefties put up a struggle. (There's a Wikip. page.)
7:35pm Dave in St Albans UK:

Hi Gary and everyone. Smooth sailing and cool tunes. Suites me fine :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm Gary:

Welcome aboard, Dave!
Avatar 7:38pm tim abdellah:

Whoa - we used to sing this tune at Jewish sunday school with the Hebrew lyric "Chavenu Shalom Aleichem"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm Gary:

Music got legs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm chresti:

Thanks TDK, I was looking just now.
Avatar 7:43pm TDK60:

Chresti, it was a famous event, seen as part of the globalization protests of the late '90s-'00s. (Seattle, Cancun, Genoa, etc.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm chresti:

Yeah, what a history, eh? Eternal spring, womanfolk taking up arms, and more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm Gary:

I remember reading about that
Avatar 7:49pm TDK60:

Gary this Tamraz sounds more influenced maybe by Euro music (Greek pop?) than Arab music. Can you inform?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm Gary:

Man, good question, TDK. I'm not sure I can shed light, other than to note the diversity and historical flows of places like Syria
  7:53pm peter:

some of these tracks seem to have a Persian-y "shesht-o-hasht" (6/8) groove like I've been reading about in Farzaneh Hemmasi's book Tehrangeles Dreaming!
Avatar 7:54pm tim abdellah:

Assyrian communities come from Iran, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. This sounds more Persian-influenced to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Gary:

Jermain is (was?) Assyrian, which is an ethnic subgroup? I think. Largely Christian, although as Tim has noted, that one track likely has Jewish origins. I think things are always more mixed up, especially historically in this region, than we sometimes imagine. And, yes, Peter is mentioning Persian influence now. Let me put it this way: The best translator of Turkish poetry in America is a Persian Jew who moved here from Turkey in the 50s (a friend of mine)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm WR:

Meant to comment that I knew nothing of Bernadette Mayer before reading your playlist and following the links. Thank you.
  7:55pm peter:

(definitely a good "Bodega Pop Book Club" choice, if you haven't read yet!)
  7:55pm peter:

@tim - jinx!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Gary:

Also, yeah, "Doogle Shapiereh" sounds more like a Persian word to my ears than Arabic, although they share quite a bit (also share with Hindi and Urdu)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Gary:

I LOVE YOU GUYS!!!
Avatar 7:57pm tim abdellah:

I played in an Assyrian wedding band for a number of years Turlock, California. Depending on the demographic of attendees at the wedding, we'd do songs in Arabic or Persian (in addition to the singer's original songs in Assyrian).
Avatar 7:59pm tim abdellah:

She's singing in Assyrian language, which has its own alphabet, and is related to Aramaic (the language Jesus spoke).
Avatar 7:59pm tim abdellah:

I'm guessing this recording was produced in the US.
Avatar 8:01pm StringOFperils:

Sounding really great !
Avatar 8:03pm TDK60:

Ah, similar to Amharic --spoken in Ethiopia and by some Rastas.
Avatar 8:04pm TDK60:

We've been talking about this a lot. Dangerous times, but hopeful. We can take a break sometimes, like in a music show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm Gary:

Nice to see you, StringOFperils!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm Gary:

Thank you, Tim! I didn't know about the language
Avatar 8:10pm tim abdellah:

Just found this website with a bunch of discographies of Assyrian singers. Some with mp3s! www.qeenatha.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm Gary:

@Tim Oh my goodness!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm chresti:

Love this..
Avatar 8:14pm StringOFperils:

Yeah, this is incredible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm Gary:

This is one of the great memory-related projects being done in the world right now, I think, yeah
Avatar 8:16pm tim abdellah:

Re: "Kharabit Ninveh" - don't know whether the tune is of Jewish origin. More likely it's one of those floating melodies that exists all over the eastern Mediterranean, with lyrics in different languages wherever you go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm doctorjazz:

Had to do a shop, missed Kharabit Nimveh...now I'm really curious (my old Yeshiva days getting the better of me).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm chresti:

So this is a sound collage of sorts?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Gary:

@Chresti Yes!
Avatar 8:37pm tim abdellah:

Enjoying these Antropoloops!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm doctorjazz:

Aramaic is three language of the Talmud and some biblical commentators as well.
Anthraloops is cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Ike:

Nice!
Avatar 8:43pm northguineahills:

So, I've gone from 4-5 hours of sleep per day the last few years to 8-10 per day in the last week. Maybe it's b/c I got my heart back.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm Gary:

Ike and NorthGuineahills -- come on in!
Avatar 8:45pm tim abdellah:

Some Moroccan chatter in this current collage
Avatar 8:45pm StringOFperils:

Yes, I heard some French
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Gary & all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Gary:

Join the party, Coelacanth∅!
Avatar 8:57pm tim abdellah:

Plastic Ono Band is such an intense album. I adore it, but it's not something I turn yo ofte for casual listening.
Avatar 8:58pm tim abdellah:

Don't think I've heard these alternates and demos - really cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Gary:

I am hoping the album (along with Yoko's) gets the reissue (plus alt/demo takes) treatment later this year for the 50th anniversary
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm WR:

NGH, I hope your additional hours of sleep are due to lower stress.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm coelacanth∅:

coincidentally, just as my laptop was booting up i used John Lennon as an example of someone that gets dissed harshly by total assholes that don't know anything at all.
Avatar 9:03pm Franco Twinkie:

NGH, I've slept most of the afternoon, only to take a break to drink some coffee, then it was lights out again. Why? not sure, but this morning I built something for a friend and it was very satisfying, and maybe I felt I had accomplished enough for the day. Also, it's really hot here.
Avatar 9:04pm Franco Twinkie:

I love this Lennon block!
Avatar 9:04pm tim abdellah:

Who is playing lead guitar here??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Gary:

Franco Twinkie, I love that you are here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm Gary:

@Tim maybe Wayne 'Tex' Gabriel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm Gary:

Great, now I'm crying
Avatar 9:09pm tim abdellah:

Oh I see - it's from the rehearsal for the NY gig. So it's the Elephant's Memory band? Good one for today's show's theme!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Gary:

YES!
Avatar 9:17pm tim abdellah:

Ooh - this long outro!!
Avatar 9:17pm northguineahills:

@WR: Probably, I'm taking only my second vacation in 9 years, although it's just to Birmingham, AL to see an old friend...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Gary:

@Tim Very different from the sudden cut-off on the album!
Avatar 9:19pm david w:

These alt takes are blowing my mind. One of the most critical shifts in my musical mind came from these tracks. Didn't know about these versions. Oh, Gary, thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm Gary:

David! So happy we get to listen to them together! This was such a formative album for me, and I'm guessing for so many of you. I like the idea of having the memory of the "real" versions silently floating through these alt takes
  9:22pm CC:

Lennon always brings me out to say 'high'..!..nice twist Gary...thsnks!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm Gary:

High there, CC!
Avatar 9:24pm JakeGould:

@Gary: How you doing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm Gary:

As good as can be expected; how are you, Jake?
Avatar 9:25pm david w:

Basically, these pulled me back from the black whole of fancy production and appreciating raw band sound. Plus, song craft wow.
Avatar 9:26pm JakeGould:

Doing fine! But I’m at the point where I attend protests, then go home to unwind and then remember, “Oh… Even the kids are still wearing masks…” and sent back down to reality.

This summer. Dunno.
Avatar 9:26pm JakeGould:

It’s like when things truly get back to normal we’ll all need some kind of social coaching.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Gary:

No kidding, man, haha
Avatar 9:28pm northguineahills:

what everyone else said about these Lennon tracks, I can't believe I haven't heard these version. Thanks, Gary!
Avatar 9:29pm Franco Twinkie:

Just before I staggered outside to look in the mailbox, I realized I've been wearing my shirt inside-out all day.
Avatar 9:33pm northguineahills:

@franco: at least the shirt was facing the right direction, I can't tell how many people have stopped or commented that my shirt is backwards (apparently, I find dressing myself a challenge).

Classic Roots!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm WR:

I did see what Sam bought on bandcamp recently but if that will influence his program tonight?
Avatar 9:35pm Franco Twinkie:

Yes, Gary, very revealing. For the longest time, John Lennon could kind of annoy me, which colored how I felt about the content of his music. This little sampler put me back on track. I'm kind of in a mood right now.
Avatar 9:35pm northguineahills:

Sam's show's sometimes have themes that deal w/ the lack of horses...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Gary:

@WR, we'll see!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm chresti:

Did he buy more horse songs, WR?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm Gary:

Ohhh, sounds good, thank you, NGH!
Avatar 9:53pm northguineahills:

It takes place in Monterrey when shit hit the fan around 2011, when the Zetas made the city one of Mexico's safest cities to one of the most dangerous (most of my friends fled then). Luckily, that period only lasted 3 years, and the movie also takes place in Elmhurst, Queens, and touches on immigration.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm Gary:

Elmhurst? Well, that pretty much seals it for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm ParUbi:

Hey guys, I tuned in way too late
Avatar 9:54pm northguineahills:

Most of you know, I met my partner in Monterrey, so, it was heartbreaking/warming to see the barrios where I did my cratedigging for cumbia rebejada....
