Oof, sound's clipping!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Carmichael:

Heya Gary. Right on, I lived in Korea 79-80, listened to a lot of "rock" stations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Gary:

Hey Guys --- Not sure what happened there. Going to try different computer. Momentarily
Avatar 7:02pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm listener james from westwood:

We're back!
Avatar 7:04pm Franco Twinkie:

Gary, how about crackers, does the bodega have crackers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm Gary:

Okay, should be working in a moment!
Avatar 7:04pm LambdaCalculus:

Sounds better now!
Avatar 7:05pm hyde:

Ah, the theme
Avatar 7:06pm TDK60:

Hey Gary. Can we stay in the bodega past curfrew tonight? Sit in the back room? Drink some malt sodas?
  7:06pm mzmm:

sounds already enticing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm WR:

Ok. On with it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm Carmichael:

crackers, tube socks and orchids.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm Carmichael:

Wow, KOREAN filthy hippie music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Hydrated and hot… howdy, Gary and WFMU pals!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Gary:

Howdy, everyone! Sorry for the crazy start. I dunno what the problem was. Clearly I need to do some testing before next week.
Avatar 7:15pm TDK60:

Granny, sitting here with an evening tea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Michael 98145:

sitting here with a laptop
Avatar 7:19pm hyde:

I like this one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm Carmichael:

Granny, how hot is it in SF? It's 104 in Sacramento.
Avatar 7:21pm david w:

Wonderful stuff! Hello, Gary and all!
Avatar 7:24pm TDK60:

Wow Carmichael, I call that a heat wave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm Michael 98145:

What a treat to hear these
Avatar 7:26pm tim abdellah:

Greetings all, from the Richmond Annex (CA), where it's a sunny 81 degrees.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm chresti:

It's 90 here, last time I looked. High was 96, I think.
Avatar 7:27pm Franco Twinkie:

Carmichael, wow, you beat us. I made a run to the hardware store, and it beat the crap out of me. But I did find some nice boxes in the dumpster there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm Carmichael:

I've been inside all day, but I'm hitting the hot road in a bit. I have a pool at home. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

TDK60: hi, what tea you got there?
Avatar 7:28pm TDK60:

at least you leftcoastees have a drier heat than us eastees.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm Gary:

Good evening, Carmichael, Franco, Chresti, Tim, Micahel, TDK, David, Hyde, Granny, WR, mzmm, Lambda, James, Cmurtha, Kenzo!
  7:29pm Dean:

Just down San Pablo from you, tim, near Gilman!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Carmichael:

It's more like that mirage heat you see in desert movies.
Avatar 7:30pm TDK60:

GST, trying a new black tea brand- Ahmad of London. Okay, better than Tetley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Carmichael: are you kidding? OY! It was in the high 80s about an hour ago, seems to be cooling now. Geez! 104 in Sacto!??!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Gary:

... and Dean!
Avatar 7:30pm Franco Twinkie:

Yes indeed TDK, but still. Summer is upon us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm Carmichael:

It's just barely June, Granny. Can't wait until August.
  7:31pm Dean:

Lhude sing cuccu!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm doctorjazz:

Hi Popsters!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Gary:

Dr. Jazz!
Avatar 7:33pm tim abdellah:

Hey neighbor Dean! There's a White Silence = White Violence demonstration in Albany tomorrow apparently. I can't make it, but my kids are heading out to it.
Avatar 7:33pm Franco Twinkie:

The streets of downtown L.A. are packed with protesters, and it looks real smoggy. Of course it's all young people - you don't see any old coots at these things
  7:34pm Dean:

I'd ask where in Albany, but if you're in Albany, you're probably not far from it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm Carmichael:

@Franco, i still have rotator cuff issues from Berkeley ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm doctorjazz:

Iron Butterflyhad nothing on this drummer!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm Carmichael:

Is this still He 6? This is awesome!
Avatar 7:35pm Franco Twinkie:

I use to go to that old school pizza place in Albany. Andronicos too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

On my way back from a brief errand on the next hill over, i passed groups of youths carrying signs on every block. Curfew is supposed to end after tonight… we'll see!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm Gary:

It is still He 6, yes!
  7:36pm Dean:

Zachary's?

Andronico's sold out a few years ago to Safeway, which changed the location names to Safeway Community Market or some such BS. Business tanked, so just a few months ago they rebranded as Andronico's, even though it's still Safeway.
  7:37pm RetroHawk:

evening folks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm Gary:

RetroHawk!
Avatar 7:38pm LambdaCalculus:

Hey RetroHawk!
  7:38pm RetroHawk:

hey Gary & Lambda
Avatar 7:42pm tim abdellah:

@Dean - yeah Albany is tiny. We lived in the UC Village for a long time, real close to you. I'll try and get the details from the kids.

@Franco - We still get pizza from Zachary's - that and the old Andronico's are technically in Berkeley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm chresti:

Aw shoot, no Andronicos.
Avatar 7:43pm tim abdellah:

Used to shop at the Andronico's on Telegraph, when it was known as Park & Shop.
Avatar 7:44pm Franco Twinkie:

Yes Zacharay's. That is so lame Dean. I mean Andronicos had a distinct personality. Doe they still have the giant paper mache cupcakes? I doubt it. No self respecting corporation would tolerate such homey nonsense.
  7:45pm Tabula Rasa:

Hi Gary! My nine year old son Gryphon is listening with me right now!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm Gary:

Tracy! Hi, Gryphon!
  7:46pm Mark R:

I love your show but I'm finding this stream unlistenable tonight, for technical reasons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm Gary:

Oh, no -- how come, Mark? Bad connection?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm chresti:

Yeah, I used to go with my mom to the Telegraph one, whenever I visited. We'd stop there after shopping in Berkeley, before heading back to El Sobrante.
  7:48pm Dean:

The Telegraph Andronico's closed a log time ago. It's now a (shuttered?) CVS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm chresti:

Not a whole Foods? We also went to the one on Solano.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm chresti:

There was a ravioli place we would go to on Solano.
  7:52pm Dean:

In Southern California I'd shop with my mom at Market Basket, Stater Bros. (still there, but probably bought and sold half a dozen times), and King Cole.

Whole Foods on Telegraph at Ashby is still doing its thing. Andronico's was on the east side of Telegraph.

Solano Andronico's is still there, resurrected as Andronico's and across the street from Zachary's.
Avatar 7:52pm Franco Twinkie:

Another place from olden tymes I like for no other reason that it was so out of step, was that hamburger place at the top of University near Collage. The food was nothing special, but I liked sitting in there and eating french fries.
Avatar 7:53pm tim abdellah:

Hey Chresti - you from El Sob? I went to Crespi Junior High. (Lived in Pinole Valley in the 70s.)
Avatar 7:54pm TDK60:

I get to watch Californians discuss geography.
  7:54pm lucitzel:

Hi Gary, Your selection tonight it's astonishing!
Avatar 7:54pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean, I think I have a picture of the King Cole you are talking about! The one with the sprung-arch entrance?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm Gary:

Lucitzel! So nice to see you!
  7:55pm lucitzel:

:p
Avatar 7:56pm tim abdellah:

@Dean - that Whole Foods used to be the Berkeley Co-Op - a cooperatively run grocery store. There used to be a number of co-ops in Berkeley, including the old Leopold's records. The only one left is the Missing Link bike shop on Shattuck @ University.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm chresti:

My parents moved there in 78 or 78, Tim. I was already living in LA, our family lived in Santa Maria, (69 to 78), before moving to the Bay area.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm doctorjazz:

Fun set, Gary!
  7:57pm Dean:

If the ravioli place is the one I'm thinking of, it closed a while ago.

University and College don't intersect, Franco. Can't think of one just now, but in Albany there's Al's Burgers with its wafting plumes of mesquite smoke.

King Cole on Washington Blvd. Yes, an arch!

Co-ops: Cheeseboard? The food collective on Bancroft?
Avatar 7:58pm tim abdellah:

Demonstration tomorrow: 5:30PM, SW & NW corners of Marin and San Pablo. "Show up with a sign that says #ENDWHITESILENCE"
Avatar 7:58pm Franco Twinkie:

When we use to stay in El Sobrante, we would stop and get a ton of food at that Whole Foods on Telegraph before we headed up into the hills.
  7:59pm Dean:

A sign?! Show up with a frigging bullhorn!

Thanks, tim. That's adjacent to Albany FD and PD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm chresti:

I can't think of the name, Dean, I remember it had windows with balconies painted on the wall. Coffee and ravioli were always destinations whenever I visited.
  8:03pm Dean:

Vesuvio on University?
Avatar 8:04pm Franco Twinkie:

I'm going to look for that picture, Dean I use to drive around looking for funny stores to photograph, and King Cole was definately funny looking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm chresti:

That was also a place we'd go to. I might be blending the two places in my head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

I think i like the inside of a chicken's mind
  8:07pm Dean:

Vesuvio is--guess what?--closed. Turned into another place that didn't last long. The space has been dormant now for a long time.

King Cole on Washington was near my very favorite restaurant when I was a kid, Ted's, a burrito take-out joint. I remember insisting to my parents that we "dine" there on my 12th birthday. Long gone, alas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Berkeley fans: But Cafe Intermezzo is back! (haven't been to its new incarnation)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm chresti:

Joanna Wang reminds me of Sheena Ringo a little, Apathy, the production and singing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

i didn't know how i needed to know Joanna Wang's songs!
  8:10pm Dean:

I realize some of us congregate here and spend a lot of time reminiscing. I confess I utterly empathize with the local history mindset. When I was commuting to work, I'd pass, daily, the old site of Rather Ripped Records, which I had the good fortune to visit c.'81.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm Gary:

I've been meaning to play a bunch of her stuff for you guys for a while now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm doctorjazz:

This Joanna Wang stuff is great! (My daughter came in, asked me, "who IS that?")
Avatar 8:12pm Franco Twinkie:

That's great Dean! "dine" at burrito stand. Anyway, I found the picture as well as one of the Whittier Drive-in, with dancing Mexicans on the back of the screen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Gary:

Haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm Gary:

Channeling Queen here
Avatar 8:20pm tim abdellah:

@Dean - re: protest - You're welcome! re: co-ops - ah yes, those are more recently established ones. Had to look it up - Leopold's and Missing link were originally student-run co-ops, but not related to the Grocery co-op.
  8:20pm Dean:

Whittier Drive-In, heck, yeah.
Avatar 8:20pm tim abdellah:

Also, this Joanna Wang stuff is cool!
Avatar 8:20pm Franco Twinkie:

i remember one time eating at Viks Chatt House, and Chrestis son, Sean, getting very annoyed that they didn't have linen table clothes. He was also about 12 at the time, and very into "fine dining." Now he drags me to places in the outer mission that are most definately NOT "fine dining."
Avatar 8:20pm tim abdellah:

Am pumped for some Cui Jian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm chresti:

He was 10.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm chresti:

By the time he was 12, only the hottest curry would do and it could be served on a tree stump, for all he cared.
Avatar 8:28pm tim abdellah:

@Dean - dammit "Rather Ripped Records" - where was that one!? I totally remember that name!
Avatar 8:29pm tim abdellah:

And yeah, sorry all for the overload of East Bay geographical reminiscences tonight.
Avatar 8:31pm tim abdellah:

YAAAASSS!!! This album is so great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm Gary:

Oh, man, never apologize for city nostalgia talk of any kind. It's what I live for!
Avatar 8:33pm Franco Twinkie:

As a young man sleeping in the street across from Peoples Park in 1976, I would start my day with a big chocolate donut at this place right across from UCSB.
Avatar 8:33pm tim abdellah:

that was supposed to include a ROFL emoji, but it didn't show up lol
  8:39pm Dean:

Rather Ripped was at Hearst and Euclid, NW corner, across the street from North Gate. It's now a cafe.

Vik's is still around, but they moved to accommodate more business. Yay!
Avatar 8:39pm Franco Twinkie:

It's been fun thinking about all these old places, but I gotta get dinner going. See y'all!
Avatar 8:39pm tim abdellah:

Bye Franco - bon appetit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Ike:

Whew! Went for a walk and ran a little late. Made it home just after curfew, ultimately without any trouble, but I was a little nervous there. Cuomo is a joke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Gary:

Night, Franco! Howdy, Ike!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Later, Franco!
Avatar 8:51pm tim abdellah:

This rules!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm Gary:

The man does not disappoint
Avatar 8:55pm tim abdellah:

I remember hearing some of his songs around the time of Tiananmen protest. They were pretty mainstream sounding, as I recall. I was really surprised to hear his later radical stuff (courtesy of the Bodega Pop blog).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Gary:

He had a couple of mainstreamy-to-us albums early on, definitely! But, maybe because he started life out as a classical Chinese musician, he really branched out after a few years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Doug Schulkind:

Very enjoyable music this evening, Mr Sullivan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Gary:

Doug! Thank you
Avatar 9:18pm tim abdellah:

@Dean - I think Rather Ripped was gone by the time I moved to Berkeley in '82, but we must have driven by there before then - I totally remember that name.

Do you remember a record store in Albany in the 80s on San Pablo between Buchanan and Solano, one or 2 buildings north from the Happy Donuts? I think it was called something like Uptown Records. It was mainly 45s, and it was super fun to poke around in there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm Gary:

Tonight starting at 10 PM sharpish! Sam Segal's If You Lose Your Horse presents "Horses Flap Their Enormous Wings and Lift Off From the Backyard" wfmu.org...
Avatar 9:41pm tim abdellah:

Enjoying these tunes!
Avatar 9:57pm LambdaCalculus:

Thanks for another great show, Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm chresti:

Thanks Gary!
  9:58pm Dean:

Down Home? Among my favorite two or three stores?
Avatar 9:58pm tim abdellah:

What @Lambda said! Thanks Gary and goodnight all :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm WR:

Thank you Gary. Busy with sorting music files so not chatty tonight but listening and highly enjoying the show, particularly the Yano and Wang sets. Laters.
Avatar 9:59pm tim abdellah:

@Dean - no, it closed a long time ago. It was up in Albany.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm Gary:
