Avatar 10:13am testingwithfire:

How did y'all turn "left" in musical taste? My moment: hearing the Talking Heads' "Take Me To The River" on the Billboard countdown in, what, 1978? I was but a preteen. I had no idea it was a cover... but what a cover.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Stanley:

Hi Bryan
  10:15am Toothgrinder Tom:

@testingwithfire do Elvis Costello and Kate Bush count as ‘left’?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Stanley:

Sorry should have said:
Hi! Bryan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am p20:

@testingwithfire: Depends on what you mean by "left". (My older sibs listened to the Talking Heads so I thought that was pretty normal). I saw an article in Guitar Player magazine saying that Fred Frith was "perhaps the best guitar player in the world". or something like that. Then I found a copy of "Gravity" at Sam Goody. I was very confused by it. At first I didn't like it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Handy Haversack:

Does Marillion count as "left"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Webhamster Henry:

More vocalese!
Avatar 10:20am testingwithfire:

@TTom: I think so! I remember being transfixed by Kate Bush on SNL around '78-79.

@p20: I don't think I was really ready for Fred Frith and Eno till my forties, although lord knows that neither Bowie nor the Talking Heads would have been the same without Eno.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Handy Haversack:

King's Lead Hat, I think you added too much butter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Andrew Waterloo:

Watching videos by Neubauten, Stump, His name is Alive, and a host of others on Much Music's City Limit At the same time the internet was introducing me to stuff like Coil.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am p20:

Then there's the sense of left, as in leftist politics - bands like Gang of Four and This Heat, tasty propaganda I willingly swallowed at a very suggestible age! (And I still swing to the left on every conceivable issue)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am karlward:

Joe I hope you are dancing to this in your smoking jacket, and I wish we could all crowd into the control room and join the dance party
Avatar 10:23am testingwithfire:

@Fernando I would consider relocating to Curitiba if Brazil had an easier residential visa policy. There is soooo much to that city. And I bet you're in a beautiful spot.

@p20 I have swung further leftward (in every sense) with age... you have company!

Joe, Edikanfo another great album. Continuing the Eno connection. He produced it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Andrew Waterloo:

I'd also listen to an early morning NPR show called The Morning Becomes Eclectic.
Avatar 10:24am βrian:

I bet Joe has even loosened his ascot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am p20:

@testingwithfire: Eno and Frith are absolutely huge influences on me, both in my listening habits and in the music I attempt to make sometimes. I was lucky to catch on to them early on. And regarding leftism: I think the state of the world has radicalized a lot of folks. - And beet hummus sounds great! It's radical because it's red and beets are a root vegetable :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am karlward:

I grew up in the Washington DC area and we had a commercial radio station called WFMU which was free form and not unlike WFMU. I listened to it whenever I could and so did all my friends. They played a lot of B52’s, REM, occasionally Sade and a lot of unclassifiable stuff.

B-52s were one of the first musics I heard that seemed weird in an exciting way.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Irene Trudel:

WPIX-FM was a huge influence on me during its brief run. As a sidebar, I've gotten to know Joe "From Chicago" Piasek. With some of the money he's made from voiceover work, Joe started WIOX in Roxbury NY, a community radio station that some good friends of ours host shows on.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am p20:

Speaking of formative "turning left" experiences - does anyone else remember David Bowie's appearance on SNL (Dec 15, 1979) where he had Klaus Nomi sing backup, and wore that conical suit where he couldn't even walk and had to be carried on stage? I remember my mother saying that was "so stupid", and I was completely transfixed.

Great show, as always, Joe. Apropos of nothing, Ray Davies and the Kinks' "Come Dancing" both feature prominently in the documentary "Bobby" -- about English footballer Bobby Moore. I just watched it on Friday. Apparently, Ray and the late Moore were friends, and Moore captained England's World Cup-winning team in 1966 -- part of the inspiration for "Sunny Afternoon." for those so inclined: www.youtube.com...

Avatar 11:29am Joe B:

Newman's Loaned - one of the best executed theme FMU DJ premiums of all time, from the concept - song selection - cover art! still in regular car-house rotation!
  11:29am Rick A.:

No, Joe, you have only played two tracks so far from it which is impressive diversification. I like the art work on that one. The painting of Newman is really evocative.
Avatar 11:30am Joe McG:

@Rick A: DJ Faye did that, the same one who sings so well. We heard her earlier in the show.
  11:31am morphe':

  11:38am Rick A.:

We saw Newman speak and perform as part of the New Yorker Festival a few years back. He performed "Sail Away" among other songs. During the Q&A, I asked him how living in Los Angeles had influenced his songwriting. He said that it probably has, but he couldn't explain how. I realized I should have asked him about his favorite version of one of his songs.

  11:46am Rick A.:

I thought he would be more of a curmudgeon on stage. However, he was fairly open and friendly both during the interview and the Q&A. You still have only used two tracks from the premium, impressive store of Newman songs, Joe. Of course, there are many male performers on that premium too.
