The movie Paper Moon was recently on Turner Classic Movies. This is could be the version used in the film.
  9:06am P-90:

Cliff & Nick are welcome any time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am David (in London):

All fine here thanks Handy. Quietly busy, but spirits remaining relatively high. Everything groovy in Greenpoint?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am Uncle Michael:

My cat Lucas trying to stop me from changing the bed linens and Cliff Edwards = opposite ends of the spectrum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am Handy Haversack:

Swings and roundabouts, DiL! We have had some tech hiccoughs that add grist to the daily grind, but hoping to have them sorted soon. Might even be nice enough tomorrow to go outside again!
Avatar 9:08am DJ Guin:

Cannot watch Ryan O'Neal movies -- he pimped out Tatum when she was a child.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am LastWhiteRhino:

Good morning Joe, so mello that I'm turning yello. Yowza, yowza, what's next Rudy Vallee?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am The Oscar:

If you get a chance, I highly recommend the movie KING OF JAZZ-- totally bizarre early technicolor musical revue (featuring a young Bing Crosby!) which is pretty much a cinematic equivalent of this set.
Avatar 9:12am Joe McG:

@waters7: Thx! @Ken: This stuff is too late for MAC. He plays pre-1925 acoustic era.
  9:13am mari:

Thank you Joe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am melinda:

Morning Joe and folks! I only just realized that I had been listening to the Shrunken Planet archive for the last hour. It seemed exceptionally mellow for a weekday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am melinda:

This is good rainy Monday morning music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks for pointing that out, Joe. Maybe this is the Old Codger era? Haha
Avatar 9:15am DJ Guin:

The rumor was that Whispering Jack Smith lost his breath capacity due to gas attacks in WWI
Avatar 9:16am Joe McG:

@Ken: Yes, the Codger definitely goes here, although I know for a fact he's an Etting man, doesn't like Hanshaw.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am melinda:

@DJ Guin I know what you mean. Have you heard The Caretaker? Similar vibe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am LastWhiteRhino:

Nice tunes but they are tough to cut a rug to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Brian in UK:

Hey Joe

Elvis was real cutting edge in 1960! How far he had fallen in five years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Handy Haversack:

Perfect for sitting in the Stutz Bearcat and watching the moon rise, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Greg from ZONE 5:

This is a welcome reminder that these songs have not *always* existed. At some point they didn't exist at all, and somebody wrote them down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am pantz:

All of these crooners remind me of the soundtrack I wore out way back when
www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am The Oscar:

Maybe it's the weirdness of the times, but I've been on a total Old Hollywood kick lately. This set is the perfect companion!
Avatar 9:24am DJ Guin:

@melinda - sadly, i am not familiar with that airshift? my parents were young during this era and never kept any good records in the house. it is any wonder I have any taste in crooners.
Avatar 9:24am Marc Francis:

Damn Joe. I love when you know exactly what I need to hear even when I don't.
Avatar 9:24am TDK60:

This is the stuff my grandparents probably heard.
  9:25am djsheilab:

I cannot believe “Are You Lonesome Tonight” wasn’t an Elvis original. I truly had no idea. Mind blown! Thanks Joe!
Avatar 9:25am DJ Guin:

SheilaBeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am The Oscar:

@GFZ5 I had a similar revelation when I first heard Raymond Scott. I had heard all those tunes in so many cartoons that it was inconceivable that those were *songs* with *names*!
  9:26am Fragonard:

This is a great show...really hits the spot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am The Oscar:

Somewhere I have some hokey charity comp that features Leonard Maltin singing this song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am LW Rhino:

Hey Joe, do you have Alfalfa from the "Little Rascals" singing "Let me Call You Sweetheart" ( complete with soap bubbles)?
  9:27am yerfriendpaul:

I wonder what Belle Baker would think of the overflow of talking pictures today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Brian in UK:

Oh the wonder of sitting in a darkened room with hundreds of people staring at a screen and sharing the experience all together. (this comment is not Covid-19 related).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Baja Joe:

The one and only time I cut away from WFMU is Sundays with Uncle Floyd's Garage Sale Music radio show. While I miss the Reggae show on WFMU, I instead get a terrific dose of true classic tunes and very corny jokes and gags on WFDU. Nice job of creating a similar vibe Joe M. I'm also enjoying the subtle theme. Brilliant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am LW Rhino:

@ Greg from Zone 5: Do you have "Monsters of Megaphone UNPLUGGED"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am melinda:

@DJ Guin here it is: en.wikipedia.org...

Avatar 9:36am DJ Guin:

@melinda -- genuine thanks for the 411. this is why I adore this community. back before I was married..hoped to get hitched at the Automat on 42nd street...neither institution endured.
Avatar 9:37am TDK60:

I'm old enough to recall the last automats. Think they were still around in NYC into the early 1970s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Handy Haversack:

@TDK60, yeah, my dad frequented the automats -- he left the city in '64.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Nardo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am David (in London):

Hey morphester and Stanley. Stanley, yes, I once had a decidedly ambiguous thing from an automat in Amsterdam.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Hughie Considine:

The movie Paper Moon was pretty memorable for the line,"Shut up and eat your Coney Island. And drink your Nehi."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Matt Fiveash:

That Nick Lowe song is so goddamn good! Studio version on the "Trombone" 4-song EP. Joe McG: if you haven't heard that song "Trombone" check it out. Right up your alley, kinda sounds like a Neil Diamond Bang side or something...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Artie:

Hey, I was there at the Haw River Ballroom to see Nick and the boys that night. Thought that sounded familiar!
  9:58am Jeffrey Davison:

Damn, Courtney Marie Andrews is the best. I have to get this record. Hey there, Joe!
Avatar 9:58am Joe McG:

@Woods: Oh, cool! I haven't seen it yet! @Matt: Yes, I've got to get a hold of his last couple of EPs. I'm hoping he'll do the sensible thing and put all this stuff on one LP or CD at some point. @Artie: Wow, that's so cool! The whole thing is up on Bandcamp if you want to relive it. Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am WoodsOfNH:

@Joe McG I can't remember the store he was in but it was the one with the massive collection in the basement. It reminded me of a place I went to one time out near Worcestor, MA called, hilariously, Al-Bums. The dust and mildew got to me but I found some absolute treasures.

I read the playlist wrong--I do like Willie Wright--but I meant Terry Callier.

@Woods Whoa! That's my evening sorted.
  10:20am Jeffrey Davison:

When I saw the name Willie Wright pop up on the playlist, I first thought you were playing the folkie. Came out of the same Chicago scene as Callier, but earlier, in the 50s. Largely forgotten, alas.

Nifty version of Step Inside Love by Bill Lloyd on the excellent Sing Hollies in Reverse tribute LP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Brian in UK:

Did the Stones ever record Blue Turns to Grey?
  10:41am paul:

McCartney recorded the song on 16 September 1968 during The Beatles (a.k.a. "The White Album") sessions, but it did not appear on the album. After an impromptu performance of "Step Inside Love", McCartney led the group into "Los Paranoias", which (despite George Harrison not being present) was credited to all four members of the band. The two songs were released as a single track on Anthology 3 in 1996, and also appear on the deluxe version of 2018's 50th anniversary edition of "The White Album".
Avatar 10:41am TDK60:

Never understood why the Fabs never did "World Without Love." They gave it Peter & Gordon. Great tune. // Brian. yeah I think it's on the US version of "December's Children" LP.

TCM showed a movie last week called No Blade of Grass from 1970. It was about worldwide famine caused by a virus and it was ham-fistedly directed by Cornel Wilde. The weirdest thing was the theme song by Roger Whittaker. It made me think of you, Joe and FMU. youtu.be...
  10:47am Bill W:

Like Joe, I grew up watching movies of my parents' era on TV, as I was reminded this weekend by watching the Marx Brothers impersonate Maurice Chevalier in MONKEY BUSINESS... which is likely the first time i heard Chevalier sing (when Harpo plays a record).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am pantz:

Avatar 10:47am DJ Guin:

@krys -- weirder still would be Johnny Whitaker
Avatar 10:47am Joe McG:

@Krys: Wow, sounds fascinating! @Bill W: That scene still makes me howl when they are all going through customs pretending to be Chevalier!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Krys O.:

By the way, the great comedic actor, Bobby Barber who appeared in the background of many old movies and TV shows was the guy in Monkey Business who has the frog in his throat. Harpo turns him upside down to let the frog out. It's fun to play spot Bobby Barber.

@paul, it s one of those wonderful things about this station and Joe's show in particular that it sets you off on parallel lines. Then peope chip in, I know that the interent can answer all questions but it is not the same as listeners/DJs interacting
Avatar 10:54am Joe McG:

@Krys: It's even in a Brunswick company sleeve. Probably ended up in the wrong box.

@johnk77 Tarnation (with Paula Fraser) covered Little Black Egg in the nineties on their first album. It's the weakest track on that album, but that's because the rest of the record is so strong.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Hughie Considine:

Flutes do occur in pop, but I'd say they are relatively rare in the upper reaches of the charts. Canned Heat's flute-dominated "Going Up the Country" is surely one of the great flutey hits.

And lord knows Peel played Kevin Coyne often!
Avatar 11:45am Joe McG:

You're too kind, RobW! But I appreciate the Peel reference. I've decided his quote about surface noise is the reason I've called this show what it's called. Not true, but it's a good story. @lee: Cool, thanks for letting me know!

I think that Kevin Coyne was on John Peel's Dandelion label.
