Hello Mr DJ.
Think today might be Bill Evans Day in this house.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01am WR:

I don't even know if I still own a radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01am Doug Schulkind:

Bill Evans Day is a very fine day!

Good Morning Pittsburgh....
Avatar 9:06am Storkenheimer:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am WR:

Bill Evans reminds me of Gil Evans which reminds me I need to listen to yesterday's Testify. I was on multiple calls yesterday remediating a hung system and couldn't listen. Then for some reason the show didn't get archived for a few hours which made me concerned I was going to miss it completely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am listener james from westwood:

Aw, poor pupper!

Rumor has it 45 will be pushing goat glands for COVID-19 at the next briefing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am Maggie B.:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Uncle Michael:

I'm about to duck out for an unavoidable doctor's appt. at the top of the hour. Wanted to say g'morning to Doug and sundry. Back later!
  9:20am Listener Robert:

Ah, I see the problem. Radio's on the beach tuned to 590. Must be WINZ, Miami. Yeah, that'll blow up a radio easily. It even crashed this computer in the middle of my comment.

The radio also had a knob I've never seen: "OFF/MUSIC/VOICE". Must've been on/off with bass-treble balance settings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am WR:

Hurry back UM. There's a great show coming on after this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Doug Schulkind:

What does an unavoidable doctor treat, Uncle Michael?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Uncle Michael:

You not only play music I've never heard before, but from places I never heard of before, Epirus.
  9:24am Listener Gregory:

Sorry I'm late, everyone. I was giving a flutist some until I realized it was Friday and switched over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Doug Schulkind:

Epirus was an ancient Greek state, located in the geographical region of Epirus in the western Balkans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Goyim in the AM:

Good morning/afternoon, folks!
  9:25am allanToronto:

thx again for Jo Jones THE DRUMS, btw, Doug. It's a gem.
Avatar 9:26am Sem:

@WR: a more prolix version of what Doug said. Epirus is a geographical and historical region in southeastern Europe, now shared between Greece and Albania. It lies between the Pindus Mountains and the Ionian Sea, stretching from the Bay of Vlorë and the Acroceraunian mountains in the north to the Ambracian Gulf and the ruined Roman city of Nicopolis in the south
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Doug Schulkind:

The Bay of Vlorë is where I want to be. Dog-paddling, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am doctorjazz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am JtotheK:

good morning doug. good morning - everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am WR:

I think the family did pronounce it to rhyme with Detroit. Don't take my word for it yet. Lemme double check.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am WR:

Hi doctorjazz, thank you for the emails last night. Have not made it to my computer yet, but plan to this afternoon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Irene Trudel:

Here's hoping you get everything working on your new computer. Last autumn we had to buy two new compouters (both tanked at about the same time). Nice to have something solid working again.
  9:37am Listener Robert:

No, kidding here, Doug, that's the same way this laptop, Nancy, acts. Video connection's loose, but that then crashes the whole thing. When that's been happening a lot -- as just happened as referred to above -- I have to run it with a pipe wrench as a C clamp holding Nancy together tightly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am doctorjazz:

Sure, WR, think I sent you stuff I already sent you (getting hard to keep track). Atlantic Trane probably going out soon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am WR:

Wow Doug, was listening the other night, did not notice the glitch. Which reminds me, you played a few segments of old guy talking about music, the blues, etc. but I couldn't figure it out from the playlist. Who, from what recording? PS this a snow Tall Tale!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am listener Rey:

Good morning all. Hiya Doug. Ooh storytime!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Doug Schulkind:

Yay, listener Ray!

@WR
Yeah, I covered up the problem purty good. I took those snippets of old guys talking about the blues from a record I have of some old guys talking about the blues. Happy to send it to you. Just email me.

@Listener Robert
You have a laptop named Nancy?!
Avatar 9:46am still b/p:

Speaking of how the furniture gets treated in more rustic dwellings...a wonderful text line came the other day from a friend in her ultra-small shack-ish dwelling:

  9:46am bigplanetnoise:

Good morning, Doug & Drummers... is the coffee pot on the campfire?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Doug Schulkind:

Good morning, JtotheK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am listener james from westwood:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am listener Rey:

Got any Justin Wilson lined up? His accent is great and the stories are hi-larious
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

The second coffee pot is, bigplanetnoise! Help your self!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Doug Schulkind:

@listener Ray
I love ol' Justin Wilson. I could listen to Cajun storytelling all day and all night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

"...in her ultra-small shack-ish dwelling: "just finished home improvement project, customizing my couch, involved sawsall"

That's a short story all in itself.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am WR:

Yay! NGH, hope that is a start of a trend.
  10:08am Listener Gregory:

They used to call me "Whitlin' Listener Gregory" until I got that gap in my teeth fixed.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am melinda:

Great story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am WR:

Seeing a "Live from the Gaslight" in a playlist recently made me realize I don't know the nuances and progression of meaning of that work. Not enough time to google everything.
Avatar 10:12am northguineahills:

@WR: I finally got my employment papers including direct deposit for my new job yesterday. I still don't know the start date. I'm paying my rent by helping my landlord schlep the machinery/materials from his business to our place and his employees in the meantime.

As for the fetish/swimwear business, I'm trying to pivot my landlord's business to include Deutschland. The swimwear business mostly includes the LGBT+ community, so if you know anyone into the fetish/swimwear, let me know. My landlord has been feeding me and giving me occasional booze, and not asking for rent (so different from NYC landlords).

@Stanley: yes (the business is split b/tn the two).

Tiger stuff:
Someone pointed me to the White Tiger get-up from Masked Singer (never seen it) yesterday. Even accounting for who was revealed as the wearer, I thiiiiiink I could outrun that tiger:

@NGH
Nope. Typo. Should be '66. Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am David Dichelle:

NGH: You are of course right about the overall diversity there. But I get the point about it being a bit overplayed in the production, if that's what you meant, Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks for getting up oily, Rich in Washington!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am doctorjazz:

Loved the Burrell!
Avatar 11:01am Brian in UK:

Stanley, been in and out, digging the garden and digging the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

Burrell carries the entire history of the music in his head and hands.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am doctorjazz:

Congrats NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am melinda:

I'll have to watch Unorthodox now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am chresti:

Morning Doug and some.
Avatar 11:05am northguineahills:

danks, dr jazz. I just need a start date so I can get a paycheck. (I ate better in uni).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Doug Schulkind:

Well howdy, chresti!
  11:07am Listener Gregory:

Doug, I think "Barnet" must be Barney Wiley, saxophonist famous for his one record with Miles Davis, the soundtrack for L'Ascenseur Pour L'echafaud. Spelling not guaranteed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am David Dichelle:

I think I'm going to take this fine show out for a careful walk. Thanks Doug! And take good care, everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Jeff Golick:

@DD: Yeah, the crown Esty ends up running with at the music school was almost too perfectly diverse. But I guess works as a contrast to the sameness of her Wmsburg crew.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Yup, another typo. Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am doctorjazz:

I grew up in close tandem to the Satmar community (Boro Park, Brooklyn), actually taught in a Satmar yeshiva for a year, and, let me tell you, the job they do catching the subtleties on Unorthodox is just amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Rich in Washington:

OMG! That's where that flute loop came from!
  11:11am Dean:

The way my Chromebook is situated on the kitchen counter makes it sound like the toaster is drumming on the Dauner bed track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Stanley:

Ol' smooth Abu Araki, no less.
  11:15am Mr C:

Any chance of Melvin Jackson or Milt Jackson returning as music beds? Like comfort food..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Jeff Golick:

Flute loops, not just for kids.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Doug Schulkind:

@Mr C
Heck, man, I'll play them simultaneously!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Doug Schulkind:

I arrived at making that Wolfgang Dauner music bed after hearing Jeff Golick play the cut on D:O Radio.
  11:19am Dean:

My toaster was probably playing along then, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am doctorjazz:

I do miss Olinga. One of my earliest jazz faves. Always sad to have it get cut of, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am dutchtheo:

Dean, was it the dub version
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am doctorjazz:

(You could just play it...)
(Or, I could just play it..)
  11:22am Dean:

Not that kind of toaster, dutchtheo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am WR:

This is excellent example of not knowing the language, no idea what Osman is singing about, but I'm feeling it for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am chresti:

Toasting toaster beat
Avatar 11:24am bobdc:

I'm having a typical reaction to this set: "Another country whose music I need to dig into deeper!" It reminds me a bit of Ethiopian music, but sometimes with Egyptian string fills (at least with Abu Araki al Bekhet ), which makes sense if Sudan is between Ethiopia and Egypt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am chresti:

This is almost like Cajun music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am melinda:

One of Us is a good documentary about people leaving Hasidic communities. One of the people featured is also an actor in Unorthodox.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am doctorjazz:

Has a but of that Afro-Carribean drum feel at times as well, interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am doctorjazz:

One Of Us was scarier than Unorthodox, which, in the end, goes for Hollywood good feelings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Stanley:

This Sudanese music just sends me (starts spinning round)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Rich in Washington:

This is wonderful!
  11:29am Mark R:

This Sudanese music is very hypnotic.

  11:30am Listener Gregory:

Love this cut, but a little confused about "Moon of the Night." What is the moon of the day?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

Its either that or the shrooms, Mark R.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am dutchtheo:

Like this a lot, sounds more like the north west african touareg music with the handclapping, that reminds me of flamenco.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Doug Schulkind:

It's either that or the shrooms, Listener Gregory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Stanley:

This is sublime
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am doctorjazz:

Olinga!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Stanley:

Check out the article I posted, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am WR:

@chresti, yes that Osman cut had a Zydeco blues resonance for me.
  11:33am Mr C:

That was quick!

In honor of Mr. Prine, I'm having a happy enchilada for lunch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am WR:

Ah, Doug, thought you were going to mix and dub it up the two at the same time. ;!)
  11:38am SeanG:

thanks Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Doug Schulkind:

@βrian
I couldn't bring myself to doing a Prine memorial. His death feels too heartbreaking. My program title is my little moment of honoring.

Sometimes you gotta take the iffy with the Jiffy-Pop, eh doctorjazz?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am WR:

Happy I am off work today. Hard to do support calls while doing my spazz soul dance routine with finger snaps and pirouettes (hoping the music holds me up)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am doctorjazz:

I'll take a great musical performance over audiophile sound any day, Doug!

Avatar 11:50am StringOFperils:

that IS good news about Dave the Spazz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am WR:

Funny thing, Chrome has seen me on Spazz show comments board so often it autocorrect capitalized and I had to fight it to get the lower case s.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Doug Schulkind:

Huzzah and hello, rw!

I love it when we pull off the WR/rw daily double!!
  11:55am Listener Gregory:

This Betty Johnson is awesome!
  11:56am Mark R:

Thank you for playing that Burton Greene track earlier, too. Challenging, to say the least. I read somewhere that reaction to his music was so hostile that he actually had a nervous breakdown in the late 60s/early 70s.
Avatar 11:56am StringOFperils:

Nice set to go out on. Thanks again, for another great show. Be well everybody !
  11:57am Listener Gregory:

Charles Warren sounds much like Betty Johnson, or is it just me?
