Makin' people cry is what I do, WR. As long as I use my powers for good and not evil.
  9:22am Listener Robert:

Avatar 9:32am Brian in UK:

Doug, this bed music reminds me of the Kanté Manfila & Balla Kalla track you played on Matt's blues show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am WR:

And at the first notes of Cristo Redento made me LOL since it is one of your regular beds and a bit of an obvious choice after that set.
  9:32am Lore:

@Brian in UK: Ha! Room for you & room for me.
Avatar 9:34am StringOFperils:

This recording of Christo Redemptor sounds exactly like the session that's on Charlie Musselwhite's 1967 VANGUARD labum 'Stand Back !'. I wonder if Philips licensed it for re-release, under Harvey Mandel's name (he's on the session). Probably.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Doug Schulkind:

@WR

My new book, a comics biography of Hannah Arendt, "The Three Escapes of Hannah Arendt -- A Tyranny of Truth" is out this week from Bloomsbury Publishing.

Very interesting sounding.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Doug Schulkind:

This track is found on a fabulous early release on the legendary Original Music label. John Storm Roberts and the folks at Original were reissuing vital crucial sounds from Africa and elsewhere before almost anyone else.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Stanley:

The look on Buster's face! Obviously not a music lover.
I am and that's why I'm here.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Doug Schulkind:

My daughter is reading Arendt right now for one of her college courses.
Avatar 9:48am StringOFperils:

Despite being pitifully broke at the moment, I might have to purchase 'The Three Escapes of Hannah Arendt'. :) I'm gradually chewing my way through Ms. Arendt's 'The Origins of Totalitarianism'. Fascinating. Cogent. Chilling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

Has there ever been a time when Arendt wasn't chillingly relevant?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Stanley:

Excellent!
Avatar 9:50am holland oats:

Avatar 9:50am Brian in UK:

Doug, you played Abu Obaida Hassan last week and I was knocked out by it. Same again today. Is it commercially available?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Doug Schulkind:

Did I really play Abu Obaida Hassan last week?! That was completely by accidents. (I like accidents.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Bas NL:

It's very soulful this Abu Obaida Hassan track. Great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Uncle Michael:

Automatic DJ'ing should not be compared with algorithmic DJ'ing. The better analogy is to automatic writing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Doug Schulkind:

And so I did! I guess I've really needed dip into this great Abu Obaida Hassan collection. Look for it next week?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Pedro in Arlington:

@Pedro in Arlington
The value is beyond measure form, too. I can't imagine living without it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Doug Schulkind:

@Uncle Michael
I think of my DJing as auto-frantic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Uncle Michael:

I guess I'm saying that the conscious mind may be overrated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Doug Schulkind:

Wasn't this backing music used in a Michelob commercial? (That was a serious question.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Uncle Michael:

I mean, I know mine is. Mine may even be a myth.
Avatar 9:57am ken krimstein:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am doctorjazz:

Amen.
  11:07am Mark R:

Ha, genius that I am, I googled Lonnie Liston Smith and discovered that he actually wrote "Astral Travelling," duh.
Avatar 11:07am βrian:

My sweetie, a fairly accomplished pianist, said after seeing Abdullah: "What he did was unpossible!"
  11:11am Irene:

I love how Ibrahim would play an extended set without stopping. He really created a mood and flow.
Avatar 11:12am ken krimstein:

i recall many wonderful nights at sweet basil, being completely swept away...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Doug Schulkind:

@Mark R
Only geniuses are allowed in here, so you're good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am dutchtheo:

The flying dutchman is back, need to check the archives, i see, for the promising reggae and jazz names.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

@ken krimstein
You and me both. Wow. I think I spent the '80s at Sweet Basil and S.O.B.'s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am doctorjazz:

Same here, saw him with Ekaya, with his quartet, at Sweet Basils many times (took my wife to see Ekaya on our first date there).
Avatar 11:15am ken krimstein:

that live album they recorded there captures it pretty well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Doug Schulkind:

OK, first new-computer fuck-up of the show. Glad I got that out of the way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am doctorjazz:

Carlos Ward in alto, that great Ekaya band...
Avatar 11:16am ken krimstein:

i thought it was part of the song
Avatar 11:16am βrian:

I imagine Sweet Basil running off with Rosemary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Doug Schulkind:

What fuck-up? I didn't hear any fuck-up.
Avatar 11:17am ken krimstein:

don't mean to be like that guy in the lcd soundsystem song, but, anyone remember seeing the arkestra marching in to the ground floor stage at danceteria, pounding on hollow trees and everything? talk about the 80's...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

Yes yes yes yes, ken k, yes.
Avatar 11:20am ken krimstein:

space is the place
  11:21am Funky16Corners:

This horn part reminds me of Jungle Boogie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am doctorjazz:

Saw The Arkestra do their thing in various East Village punk clubs. Quite an experience.
Avatar 11:23am ken krimstein:

and the sax players - particularly gilmore -- what a revelation...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

If he had had a different temperament, John Gilmore would have been a giant figure in the music. He preferred a following different trajectory. Fellow sax players, Coltrane included, recognized his unique brilliance.
Avatar 11:26am Brian in UK:

Looks like the LP of Abu Obaida Hassan is on the way to me. I've Schulkinded again.
Avatar 11:27am βrian:

Locus is the focus.
Avatar 11:28am StringOFperils:

Best Arkestra show for me was like that here, in Toronto, '82-ish. In a little dive bar under a flophouse hotel near here, that was levelled shortly afterward. John Gilmore pounding The Lightning Drum with those big hooked sticks that seemed made out of walking canes, June and several other dancers dancing all around us with veils, The sequined band marching around, and gradually coalescing on the little stage. Ra, magisterial, surveying it all. Changed my life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Doug Schulkind:

@Brain in UK
I'm just trying to Abu Obaida Hassan the world. Is that so terribly wrong?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

@StringOFperils
I close my eyes and I can see it plain as day. Black to the Future!
Avatar 11:31am hyde:

i saw the Arkestra at MassArt auditorium in 1981. They ranged all around the place playing Space is the Place. it was really something
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am doctorjazz:

Time to exercise, thanks, Doug!
Avatar 11:35am βrian:

Exercise or get exercised. That seems to be the choice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Doug Schulkind:

Can you believe that this Oscar Sulley track from 1973 remained unreleased until it appeared on this Soundway compilation in 2002?

No, I didn't think you would.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Andrew Waterloo:

Remember the CD reissues of Ghana sounds.. a real introduction for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am WR:

Late replying but want to say that I emphatically prefer monkey forests to monkey farts but admit that there are likely many monkey farts to be found in monkey forests.

Looking forward to your show on Sunday, Irene!

Thanks Gina! I don't know if I can locate it in time, but Peter (Keepnews) and I interviewed Lee Konitz for a Jazz Profiles program we produced for NPR many years ago. Would be nice to air a portion of the interview if I can locate it.

The woman at the top is playing in sync with this!
  11:44am Dean:

StringOFperils: Looks like Sun Ra played The Edge, a venue renovated for punk shows, '78-'81. A Starbucks now resides at the corner, naturally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Doug Schulkind:

Off course she is, Mr C.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Gina Bacon:

That would be cool. I hope you do! Peter's obit was really great.
  11:45am Mr C:

You're a genius Doug
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Irene Trudel:

Thanks Uncle Michael. I'll have to catch your show in the archives. Gotta get to work on my actual job. I'm editing a 2011 performance by Jon Baptiste for the Soundcheck podcast-- might've been his first time on the show. Thanks for all the great sounds today, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Uncle Michael:

See ya Sunday, Irene!
  11:48am Funky16Corners:

I played some Staples yesterday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

Who remembers the original version of this number?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Irene Trudel:

Yes, thanks @Uncle Michael. Wish me luck-- I'm a newbie to this streaming thing. Catch everybody on Sunday at 3pm EDT.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Doug Schulkind:

Happy editing, Irene. See you Sunday!!

That's right ----> It was by Hank Williams!
Avatar 11:51am Brian in UK:

Great show, genius DJ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am WR:

Great show today Doug, as is usual every Friday. It resonated strongly for me today. I didn't have to be on any conference calls during the show today so was able to keep listening.
Avatar 11:51am david w:

I walked off to cook soup and missed Oscar Sulley, but here's a wacky fact. I have a flute and a dashiki he gave me in the 70s. I don't dare touch either.
Avatar 11:51am StringOFperils:

@Dean..ACtually it wasn't at The Edge, but good guess ! Remember Larry's Hideaway? Total scuzz hole. But a great venue, for a time. Saw a really great Nina Hagen Band show there around that time too. So small, the audience was almost on the stage, and vice versa. Great acoustics. Probably should have worn gloves and a mask in there, upon reflection.
  11:51am Mr C:

Philly's Finest!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Doug Schulkind:

You've got quite the Sulleyed reputation, david w. (But seriously, holy wow!)
Avatar 11:53am StringOFperils:

thx again, for a fantastic show Doug ! Superlatives fall short of describing it. Loved it.
  11:54am Dean:

SOFp: Naw, I don't remember these venues, because I've never been to Toronto. But your colorful depiction of it made me curious, so I poked around and found a bit of history.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Uncle Michael:

I'm wearing a dashiki.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Doug Schulkind:

Makes me happy to hear that, StringOFperils. Glad you dug it!

Greetings, Dean! Did I miss you earlier?
Avatar 11:55am Sem:

Thx, Doug, for all you do on this program, and around the place. See you around the stream. Bye!
