Howdyyy, with my thoughts for the suffering bayou, and nola, and ok, all the world...
Avatar 9:14am Brian in UK:

Sem, you have completed you two weeks in cognito?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Doug Schulkind:

Let's suffer together, dutchtheo. So much suffering.
  9:15am Listener Gregory:

Yesterday I was convinced that it was Friday until the evening. I was *very* concerned that this show wasn't on, and without a replacement. Why would you worry us that way, Doug?
Avatar 9:15am Brian in UK:

Everything I know is wrong, even this. But I do not know anything.
Avatar 9:16am Sem:

Yes, Brian, on the 29th. All fine here, though there is a little stir-crazy afoot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Doug Schulkind:

I'll try to do better, Listener Gregory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am doctorjazz:

Love this track (Let Me In Your Heart)!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Doug Schulkind:

"Let Me Hold Your Hand," by C.J. Chenier & the Purell Allstars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Stanley:

My Baby Don't Wear No Shoes - what a great name for an album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Doug Schulkind:

How about "I Bought My Baby a Racoon," Stanley?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Stanley:

Such sweet sentiment, Doug.
Avatar 9:25am Brian in UK:

Doug, a line from Gurf Morlix sticks in the memory. "Were you lying down when you stood me up." Countryish music has a gift for great titles.
  9:27am Listener Robert:

They have (or had) machines like that at the Museum of Sex in NY.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Same kind of wordplay and semantic twists can be found in the lyrics of Broadway and showtunes.
Avatar 9:28am duke:

Hello fellow shut-ins
Avatar 9:29am Brian in UK:

I'm not anti-semantic, some of my best friends are words.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Doug Schulkind:

Greetings, Listener Robert! Nice to see ya, duke!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am dutchtheo:

I want to twist my hips with you Fernest,(b/w) but i twisted my ankle this morning.
Avatar 9:35am duke:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Listener Bob in PGH:

Hi all! Slept in this morning, now reporting for work . . . .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Alex In Illinois:

There is both a music CD and an actual cookbook of recipes
Avatar 9:37am Brian in UK:

Doug, will the Tuesday one hour show make a temporary return?
  9:38am Listener Gregory:

I *wish* my listenership were engorged!
Avatar 9:38am Brian in UK:

@LG go to your room, oh you are there already.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am mauri:

hØwdy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Alex In Illinois:

I can't tell if this is Honky Tonk Angels or Grey Speckled Bird or yet another song with this melody
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Doug Schulkind:

Howdy, Alex in Ill-a-noise! Listener Bob in PGH! mauri!

Welcome welcome welcome!
Avatar 9:40am Sem:

Geez, long time, mauri!
  9:41am Listener Gregory:

It wasn't God who made honky-tonk meatballs.
Avatar 9:41am fred:

A Kitty Wells cover?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Doug Schulkind:

This song title translates as "(My Childhood’s Green Valley)," but it is clearly stealing the melody.
Avatar 9:41am Sem:

"Meet me behind the rock crusher, baby, I'm a little bolder there."
  9:42am Ramblin' Ray:

Sing it sisters! Greetings Drum Drum Doug and listeners out there!
  9:42am bigplanetnoise:

Coffee and a Honky Tonk Beignet, please.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Doug Schulkind:

Hey hey, Ramblin Ray! and BIGPLANETNOISE! (sorry I shouted)
Avatar 9:43am fred:

Then again, many country songs stole melodies from folk songs
Avatar 9:44am Brian in UK:

mauri, are you still in Tampere?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Doug Schulkind:

@fred
Oh boy are you right about that. Thievery is the highest form of flattery.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Doug Schulkind:

Our next selection will be more than a little familiar...
Avatar 9:44am Will in Bloomington:

i'll have my beignet with lingonberry jam a side of meatballs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am mauri:

there was a program about norwegian americafans on the tv. small town with lots of american cars. the first migrant workers brought back pretty much everything to build a house in an american way. these songs go well with that
Avatar 9:45am Brian in UK:

Ah Hilde, my sweetheart of the rodeo.
  9:46am Listener Gregory:

D I V Ø R C E !
  9:46am Gina Bacon:

Good morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Doug Schulkind:

Comin' right up, Will in Bloomington. Served piping hot!
Avatar 9:46am βrian:

Good gray morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Doug Schulkind:

Gina Bacon! Gina Bacon!
  9:47am Listener Robert:

What does that spell in Norwegian?
  9:47am bigplanetnoise:

Since there’s no longer a schedule (or a plan), I’ll just have a flight of aquavit with those meatballs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am mauri:

Hey sem long time doing nothing.
BiUK I travelled to see my parents and got stuck but its good. sauna and dip in the just thawed lake and walking in the woods. taking it easy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Uncle Michael:

This woman can't bloody spell!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Doug Schulkind:

βrian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Pedro in Arlington:

Was just thinking that WFMU represents all that is unselfish in this country. What represents the opposite? It's caked in bronzer and has a cotton-candy fright wig that takes hours to prepare each day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Alex In Illinois:

. . . and folk songs have been reusing melodies forever
Avatar 9:48am Will in Bloomington:

@ robert
that song was in finnish, not norwegian
  9:48am Gina Bacon:

I love those IKEA meatballs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Uncle Michael:

Ikea Meatballs was the name of Doug's first band in high school.
Avatar 9:49am Sem:

Too many instructions for eating, Gina. I give'm a pass.
  9:49am βrian:

I thought it was "Band #1"
Avatar 9:50am Brian in UK:

I always have a fork left over at the end.
Avatar 9:50am Will in Bloomington:

oh wait it is norwegian nevermind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Alex In Illinois:

I don't think I have ever tasted meatballs that I did not like. At least not since the age of 10.
  9:51am bigplanetnoise:

Do you have to assemble the IKEA meatballs?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Doug Schulkind:

My mother used to make a particularly bizarre but delicious version of Swedish meatballs. It was made with chili sauce and grape jelly. I ain't fibbing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Uncle Michael:

Heinz chili sauce and grape jelly is the standard cocktail weenie sauce.
Avatar 9:52am βrian:

I'd guess that age 10 is when I had my last meatball. As far as I can remember, anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

Well my mother can go straight to hell, then.
  9:53am Gina Bacon:

They give you the little allen wrench as a utensil.
  9:53am Listener Gregory:

Doug, let a thousand meatballs bloom.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

One never knows what one might first encounter upon entering the realm of WFMU every day. I certainly did not anticipate that, er, mouth and nose robot thingie? or the secret recipe for cocktail weenie sauce. I guess i've found my people! Greetings, Doug and you beautiful, weird WFMU pals. Thanks for sharing another day together.
Avatar 9:56am Brian in UK:

Hugo, where are you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am melinda:

There is no Ikea in Maine and when I heard from Chicago friends that they had Swedish meatballs I felt so left out, even though I can make them at home.
Avatar 9:57am βrian:

Now, Blooming Meatballs is a fine first band name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am dutchtheo:

It sounded like the average dutch "schlager" (levenslied (songs about life)) radio station
Avatar 9:58am βrian:

So what seasoning is typical for Swedish meatballs? Allspice seems to be one. Not scandanavian allspice, I presume.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Uncle Michael:

Scandinavian spice is an oxymoron.
Avatar 10:00am Will in Bloomington:

Wikipedia says they use white pepper or allspice and salt
Avatar 10:01am Brian in UK:

Uncle, did she replace Scary Spice or Posh Spice?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Uncle Michael:

I've heard it in 3/4.
Avatar 10:01am βrian:

Cayenne pepper or similar is implied in our household. No need to list it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am dutchtheo:

Nutmeg? Google says Swedish meatballs are actually based on a recipe King Charles XII brought home from Turkey in the early 18th century. So look for a köfte recepy..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Doug Schulkind:

Here is your Norio Maeda lineup:

Norio Maeda (p), Akira Miyazawa (ts, fl), Shigeo Suzuki (as, fl), Akitoshi Igrarashi (as), Konosuke Saijo (ts), Ichiro Mimori (ts), Horoshi Okazaki (bs), Tatsuro Takimoto (b), Takeshi Inomata (d)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Uncle Michael:

Brian, she replaced Opiod Spice. The previous oxymoron. She was the Joe Besser of the Spice Girls.
  10:03am Listener Gregory:

I heard about someone who insisted the the song got its title because it was the fifth take of the tune at the recording session. Sad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Stanley:

I see Doug is getting ready for the conversion of WFMU into the new format - Soft 91.1, as announced by Clay Pigeon this week
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am melinda:

@dutchtheo interesting. For me nutmeg plus lemon is the identifying flavor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Uncle Michael:

It is fucking SNOWING here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Stanley:

Now that we are a few bars in, maybe not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am doctorjazz:

Nice orchestration on this Maeda.
Avatar 10:06am fred:

@Stanley: speaking of bars, are the pubs closed?
  10:07am Listener Gregory:

This (Maeda) is quite interesting. Doing their own version of the drum solo too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am dutchtheo:

16:07, I think it is time to take my first beer,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Uncle Michael:

I should think the pubs just need to rebrand as A&Es.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am melinda:

Dig the flute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Stanley:

@fred: of course. I have heard of some underground drinking dens catering to the immune, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Doug Schulkind:

My wife just stepped in my studio ready to throttle me. She hates it when I play different versions of the same song. She really really hates it. "Eight of these we have to hear!" she practically shrieked just now.

But I must do what I must do. Because it is what I do.
Avatar 10:09am βrian:

Waiting for the shakuhachi segue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Doug: thanks for doing what you do. I, personally, can't get enough of "Take 5" variations. "Sweet Georgia Brown" is another story…
Avatar 10:09am StringOFperils:

I like how they un-swing this. (unswung ?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

UM: SNOW?!?!?!
Avatar 10:10am WR:

LOL. You were just on the first version when she expressed her displeasure.
Avatar 10:10am βrian:

Breath mint? Here, take five.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

StringOFperils: this is the sleepy stumbling version
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Stanley:

@Doug - just don't attempt to beat Mary Wing's record.
Avatar 10:11am Sem:

Oladepo Ogomodede Onomatopoeia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

and don't play three hours of Bohemian Rhapsody
Avatar 10:11am StringOFperils:

ha ha GST
Avatar 10:11am Kris Holmes:

Hi guys, taking five I see.
Avatar 10:11am Sem:

Been done on 'FMU, GST. You want I should find the show for you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Jeff Golick:

Take Five and call me in the evening.

Jessie would NOT have enjoyed Dave the Spazz's show last night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Uncle Michael:

Play three hours of Murder Most Foul. Wait...it's been done.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am doctorjazz:

I'm in for 3 hours of Bohemian Rhapsody(again)
  10:12am Gina Bacon:

What happened on his show last night?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Listener Bob in PGH:

I absolutely LOVE multiple interpretations in a row. I love Mary Wing's "Three of a Kind" segments too.
Avatar 10:12am fred:

@GST: I remember when Duane played a bonus version just after that show
Avatar 10:12am duke:

A long time ago Kenny G. played the same song for 3 hours. I have removed that tune from my mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Uncle Michael:

Three hours of Murder Most Foul...with chimps, Gina.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Doug Schulkind:

StringOFperils! Granny Spicy Tuna! WR! Brother Kris Holmes! Other Brother Jeff Golick!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Jeff Golick:

@GB: he played that new Dylan song, all 17 minutes of it, repeatedly, for the whole show. Or, what @UM said.
Avatar 10:13am Sem:

Finch and chimps would make it a new taste sensation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Doug Schulkind:

@Granny Spicy Tuna
Why stop at three hours?!
Avatar 10:13am StringOFperils:

Dave The Spazz'z show last night....oh...oh...oh the humanity !
  10:13am Listener Gregory:

Oladepo Ogomodede played (plays?) for years in a parking lot in Florida. www.daytondailynews.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

Next up. two different versions of "Take Five" from South Africa.
Avatar 10:15am Sem:

Thx for that link, Listener Gregory. Lovely story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Uncle Michael:

Already more than version in four!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am melinda:

Love these different versions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Doug Schulkind:

Listener Gregory, I have that page open, ready to read from it during my next mic break.
Avatar 10:16am βrian:

Say, do I recognize Susan Day on tambourine there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Jeff Golick:

Pavement *sorta* did a version of Take Five.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Pedro in Arlington:

@UncleMichael - Your challenge now is a show built on each reference, especially the musicians, in "Murder Most Foul," in order. Have it ready at noon.
Avatar 10:17am βrian:

*Dey*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Uncle Michael:

Pedro, you've got Spotify for that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

Thank God someone does, melinda!
Avatar 10:18am Kris Holmes:

Wait, what? Someone played the new Dylan song for 3 hours? For real?
Avatar 10:18am still b/p:

I know a brother and sister who can adeptly play pretty much any song with the palms-together, sorta fart-noise method. I'll ring them up for you if this here joint goes all-in on Boho Rhapo. I myself would like to hear the duo achieve a decent Take Five.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Doug Schulkind:

@βrian
My first crush was Maddy Prior. My second crush was Susan Dey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Pedro in Arlington:

Nah, I hate all music streaming platforms that lack a live deejay. Death to those. No fun and they require reading.
  10:18am Listener Gregory:

Susan Dey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Jeff Golick:

@Kris: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Doug Schulkind:

I'm with you, Pedro. That means, yes, I am in Arlington!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Doug Schulkind: i guess if you could coordinate several DJs continuing the endurance test through several programs in a row, you could get a 24-hour cycle of Bohemian Rhapsody going?
  10:19am Gina Bacon:

Wow. With chimps!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Uncle Michael:

Yes, Kris. It was amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Doug Schulkind:

Another version of "Take Five" in 4/4.
  10:19am Listener Gregory:

Doug, will you kindly give Jessie my regards but inform her that I cannot agree with her evaluation of such sets. These versions are so different, that it's really not like hearing the same song 8 times.
Avatar 10:19am βrian:

@Doug: It was those braces, wasn't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Uncle Michael:

Yes, with chimps.

I think he's saying he used the violin he learned on from age 9.
  10:47am Listener Gregory:

Doug, I haven't heard that the Milgram experiments were flawed (though they WERE ethically dubious). His book about them is short and worth reading. The Stanford Prison experiment (often discussed on the same page) has been called into doubt.
