A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@morphe, I might be passing through Madrid in November! Is the Sunday flea market interesting? Any favorite cheap restaurants?
  10:10am Listener Gregory:

Live opera is fantastic, but opera on the radio is really for those who already know the opera and so don't need visuals, subtitles, etc. IMHO.
That doesn't mean that an occasional aria or chorus isn't very radio-worthy.
Avatar 10:12am Linda Lee:

i think it's possible for us to appreciate opera out of narrative context, as music, too. it's just a form most of us aren't used to.

"Pure, uncut program" haha
  10:31am ignatatus666:

Greetings Trouble
Please respect that these are anonymous programs
You just outed a famous person
Not cool
The 12 step program of A.A. is not Christian based
Each members concept of a God is personal. I’m 32 years sober and my God now as well as then is Good orderly Direction
Basically the group. The group together stay sober so that’s a power greater then me.
When the groups end meetings with the our father prayer it’s a total turn off and actually not a part of the program
I never take part in that prayer and never have
  10:35am ignatatus666:

In A.A. and NA there are those that are addicted to the 12 step meetings. They just need to work on the 12th step and bring the message others . I personally think it’s a deeper rooted issue after a few years, yet we are no one to judge a person that is staying clean. We got high and drunk 24/7 so.....
I also personally never hid in meetings. I keep the program with me and reach out to those who are suffering.
  10:36am Jeff formerly from Rahway:

Fascinating discussion! Gonna share this w/a friend who is in AA (and staying sober!)
  10:37am charles b:

read michael pollan's 'open your mind ' (or something along those lines) for that very issue...it's mainly about mushrooms but a great read for history including the AA connection.!
  10:40am Listener Gregory:

@ignatatus, I agree with you about outing famous people, but note that the person's addiction problems are very well known and are all over her wikipedia page, for example.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Ike:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Webhamster Henry:

Go search for strangely satisfying videos (like on TikTok) they are ... strangely satisfying. People spackling walls and the like!
Avatar 10:46am Nulsh:

Interesting interview. Thanks Trouble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Webhamster Henry:

Lesson #4!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Phillippe Bastille:

Good morning Trouble and troublemakers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am melinda:

@Ike thanks for the links, will read later. I know AA has helped lots of folks but it seems weird to me that alcoholism is simultaneously considered a disease and something best treated with a quasi-religious program.
Avatar 10:52am đ¢ ÞäŦ:

yeah, great interview. Never thought of addiction to 12 step. Now it seems obvious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Phillippe Bastille:

Never could get into AA. I just couldn't get into the religious aspect. KInda handling sobriety it on my own
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Webhamster Henry:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Ike:

@WH, that's a great one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Phillippe Bastille:

*sobriety on my own (see Ike, I need you editor guys)
Avatar 10:57am pantz:

@melinda addiction is a disease that can't really be treated medically, except for total abstinence. The 12 Step program is more about rewiring yourself to deal with everyday life without abusing. Keep in mind, AA was established very early in the 20th Century, when your chices for addiction recovery were a sanitarium or death and religious groups were the only way to come together and talk about issues.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Phillippe Bastille:

Been a while since I read it, but I think it was Annie Grace who discussed AA and its application to recovery in "This Naked Mind". She wasn't a fan, if memory serves me well.
Avatar 11:00am pantz:

It's as religious as you want it to be. Most meetings I go to don't stress any one form of religion or beliefs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am JeremyB:

Fantastic show. Heatley's book sounds incredible.
Avatar 11:07am pantz:

I'm definitely going to get a copy of that book. I'm intrigued.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am coelacanth∅:

my brother tried 3-4 (?) 12-step groups, all of which he had to stop going to because of the pressure and (unspoken) judgement on him for being critical of the religion pushed there. he found a "good one" finally but it was a 2.5 hour commute from where he lived, in brooklyn.
  11:12am cheri the duff:

What's up Trouble and all other Trouble makers,,Cheri the duff is here to join the party!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am sphere:

there are non-religious sobriety groups out there, though I've been sober always and don't really know about them.
  11:15am JakeGould:

@ListenerGregory: Who are we talking about here?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am melinda:

@pantz I'm reading the Vox article now and it makes some of the same points you've made about why it works for some people (support, cognitive-behavioral group therapy), but it would be wrong for it to be the only option, which is why alternative groups have been started. Also, some people do better with naltrexone therapy. I read an article in my local weekly paper by someone who had been in and out of treatment, lived on the streets even, and finally got better with naltrexone. My point was that there need to be more options and it seems that AA has undue dominance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Phillippe Bastille:

The reddit thread r/stopdrinking is really supportive, but you have to steel yourself for the sheer number of tragic stories you see if you get on it every day. Helped me a lot at the start, but I can only get on it sporadically for that reason
Avatar 11:22am pantz:

I have no problem with alternatives to AA that would work for others. Heck, if soaking my head in vinegar every day keeps me from abusing, I would try it. To each their own.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Phillippe Bastille:

@pantz absolutely!
  11:27am ignatatus666:

Gregory the listener
That fine for herself to do. It’s just a reminder that others should never be mentioned by full name nor status. Our disease/addiction has no boundaries. If a well known person gets sober then decides not to be sober it gives the impression that a 12 step program didn’t work for them why would it work for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am coelacanth∅:

sphere yes that's what my brother needed; along with a job that was more fulfilling. (but his depressive cycle derailed him from going after the more fulfilling job -etc...)
  11:30am JakeGould:

“It’s just a reminder that others should never be mentioned by full name nor status.” That is an utterly incredulous claim when a public figure decides to share information on their lives with others.
Avatar 11:30am βrian:

Bakers have better success with a 13-step program, naturally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am sphere:

i am digging the Stargazer Lilies most severely.
  11:31am ignatatus666:

We were very lucky in the area I got sober in. Many young people did at the same time. We had many social sober gatherings. Dances, Live music, New Years ball etc. all sober. We also were given great advice not rules to help stay sober during holidays without being anti social
Go to the party ,grab a coffee cup start on one side of the room and greet everyone as you are making your way to the door ( depends how or if you do t feel comfortable)
  11:31am JakeGould:

@βrian: Now THAT is funny! But falls a wee bit into the whole world of the “13th step.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am sphere:

My favorite non-drinker trick is the club soda with lime. it looks like so many different drinks that no one will ask you anything. :)
Avatar 11:32am Party.Worm:

Do any of y'all make zines? anyone interested in being zine friends? also I'm not in AA anymore but I love al-anon lol
  11:32am ignatatus666:

Jake Gould
Read the first sentence man. It’s ok for herself to do. Please do t try to find something that doesn’t exist pal.
  11:33am ignatatus666:

Sphere I make mocktails
Seltzer is my go to.
  11:34am PJ:

@Ignatatus: Why is it our business whether anyone else is sober or not? If you want to be sober and proselytize for what worked for you, fine, but what is the point of castigating someone who doesn't subscribe to your particular beliefs?
  11:35am PJ:

"your business"
  11:35am ianai:

Strange dude. Why would he go to AA if he’s not an alcoholic? No wonder the steps didn’t work for him.
Avatar 11:36am pantz:

@ianai he explained that he was addicted to the programs themselves. That's what his book is about.
  11:37am JakeGould:

@ignatatus666: Which of your first sentences that you are then contradicting by other sentences.

Anyway, there is no magic go the secret of AA or NA. The vast majority of people don’t rat on people in AA or NA. It’s — frankly — kind of a ninny/school marm attitude to “remind” people like this. Most people are respectful. Few I know who even hate people who are in AA would even gossip in spite.

This is all straw man nonsense on your part. You are assuming negative intent.
  11:39am Morphe’:

Ike - the Rastro Sunday flea mkt is of interest, mostly furniture. Food -best to eat the”menu” lunch. Much cheaper than dinner. Most cafes/bars give a free tapas with each drink/round... can range from olives to a wee paella... my favorite little restaurant is called Bar Amour - a real rest, despite the name. It was a former old man bar..need a reservation. If solo, can perhaps get a bar stool.

I have to admit that I'm very intrigued by David Heatley's new book. I did not like his previous comic 'My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down' at all. From reading that though it does make a lot of sense that he became addicted to addiction programs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Ike:

Thanks @Morphe! Does Madrid have any big immigrant communities with great restaurants? One thing I love about New York City is all the great Chinese and Thai restaurants among many others (though sometimes you have to take a train pretty far out to get the really good stuff). Is Madrid like that or is it best to focus on Spanish food?
