As I mentioned, every track on this tape is untitled. Somebody was feeling lazy....

So, Graf Haufen, who compiled this tape, was sort of a wunderkind of the NDW/experimental/industrial scene. He began releasing his own tapes in the early '80s, when he was 14. www.discogs.com...

By the by, side B of this tape is not as relentlessly noisy as side A -- there's some semi-tunage on side B.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm
Rich in Washington:

You say relentlessly noisy like it's a bad thing, Tony.
Avatar 12:27pm
Tony Coulter:

Not a bad thing at all. I'm just thinking of those of you with a delicate constitution. (Heya, Rich!)
Avatar 12:28pm
Tony Coulter:

It's funny how it can be easier to "read" an image when it's smaller. I'm just now noticing the buildings (inc. a church?) visible through the window on the cover of this Katacombe tape.

Hiya, TDK60 and Michael 98145!!

We're listening to a C90 now -- not a TDK, tho...
Avatar 1:08pm
Tony Coulter:

By the way, even tho this tape sounds kinda quiet/distant, I've got the levels way up -- so it's up to you to crank it up even more.

every other week TDK. i'm pretty surprised you didn't know about it.
Avatar 1:15pm

Weird how the high end/treble suddenly appears 3/4 of the way through the tape. Oh those wacky cassettes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm
coelacanth∅:

i've had tapes that sounded fine, then later sounded very muffled until a few minutes (or many minutes) in they sounded normal again. i figured it was from having it rewound and stored for a long time near a speaker or the tape deck itself.
  1:21pm
Fotherington:

That was rather a catchy one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm
coelacanth∅:

...and the other side starts out fine, giving me the impression it was only what was most exposed that got demagnetized.
Avatar 1:22pm
Tony Coulter:

Ahoy, Fotherington!
  1:23pm
Fotherington:

Indeed Sir
Avatar 1:24pm
TDK60:

coelacanth∅: Yes, I have that problem too. Been going through some old tapes, to get rid of ones that no longer play well. But many I have still sound fine.
Avatar 1:25pm
Tony Coulter:

With these cassette-underground tapes made at home on cheap dubbing decks there are so many ways things can go a bit haywire from the get-go, unfortunately. Comes with the territory.
Avatar 1:26pm
TDK60:

..and coel: every other week? Gotta check the archives more. I'm usually not available to be here live on a Tuesday.
Avatar 1:28pm
Tony Coulter:

The tape shows aren't archived, tho -- fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your point of view.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm
coelacanth∅:

sadly,TDK, almost all tape hiss shows are not archived.
Avatar 1:30pm
TDK60:

..no archives?!! Well, somebody *tape* for me! Hee
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm
coelacanth∅:

there are so many tapes i haven't listened to in years that i can't be sure; but i haven't come across one that no longer is worth listening to in years either. i think most of them are still good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
coelacanth∅:

shhh. don't tell Tony but i have taped portions of a few shows. as it turns out though -not the best ones.
Avatar 1:38pm
Tony Coulter:

Oops --the tracklist got ahead of itself there, two tracks back. Sorry! Itchy trigger fingers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm
coelacanth∅:

TDK, at least one tape hiss show was archived. the christmas show from last month.
Avatar 1:42pm
Tony Coulter:

By the way, this Allegory comp does have a cover. It's an oversized booklet that was too big to include in the playlist pic. The curious can see it here: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 1:44pm
TDK60:

coel: thanks. Oh, you meant earlier, only the "tape hiss" shows aren't archived, right? Is this because trying to separate out tracks would be too difficult?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm
Michael 98145:

cool. not sure i've ever heard a Front 242 cover before now ...
Avatar 1:48pm
Tony Coulter:

@ TDK60: Yes, only the Tape Hiss shows aren't archived. It's because I play complete albums and sometimes unreleased/"unofficial" stuff. At the station's urging, I decided to be extra-cautious, from a legal point of view ... so, no archives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm
steveo:

*things I always wanted to know but was afraid to ask
Avatar 1:56pm
TDK60:

tony: oh, the legal thing.
Avatar 1:56pm
Tony Coulter:

From another point of view: If I didn't play these tapes in their entirety, I might not play them at all. Cuing up individual cassette tracks in the middle of a set can be a pain, so one tends to avoid doing it. If not for "Tape Hiss," these tapes would probably just sit in drawers, unplayed.
Avatar 1:58pm
TDK60:

..cueing tapes, yeah. Tapes have advantages but finding specific tracks is not one.

Avatar 2:00pm

  2:01pm
Dean:

Seems to me the Nakamichi Dragon had a reasonably efficient cueing feature.
Avatar 2:04pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Dean!

I could also just pre-cue a big stack of tapes -- but, you know ... laziness. Plus, I think there's interest/value in hearing cassettes in their entirety, even when I don't like every track equally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm
coelacanth∅:

some decks are, or were, good at finding tracks; but it's totally dependent on the tape. (how much, if any space is between tracks; how quiet the tape is overall)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm
coelacanth∅:

i very much prefer to hear them as they were intended to be heard - even if it means no archives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm
Rich in Washington:

I had a fairly good mid-budget Mitsubishi deck in the late 80s that did an OK job of automatically searching out gaps between recordings in a certain FF/RWD mode.
Avatar 2:09pm
Tony Coulter:

Of course, things go south when there are sudden silences *within* tracks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm
Rich in Washington:

Yes. Or super short silences between tracks. Kind of useless for all the tapes I'd record off the radio.
  2:21pm
