i neverr lived close enough to hear wnyu on terrestrial radio so i discovered it around the same time as i did wfmu, I was very late to the game, think Realplayer. I used to listen to NYC (and other cities) AM stations at night on the radio because they would carry for hundreds ad hundreds of miles but only at night
