brain so fatigued (my meds give me more insomnia then usual), I wouldn't mind some devil's dust (I'll just take a nap after work instead).
  3:30pm Jocelyn:

I was dancing around to Whitney the other night. I met the most amazing man. He's absolutely perfect for me. Or so I thought. I hadn't seen him in a while. His new girlfriend introduced herself. She looks like a real housewife of Orange County. You know? The overly bleached hair and frozen pulled face o'fillers?
  3:30pm P-90:

It's The First Lady of Song!
  3:30pm zzmm:

Heeii, SuBuieee crauzie troll lister here bu'luv'yr'sho'jus'sayin'

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm northguineahills:

Does music, wfmu, and learning count as addictions?
  3:34pm Stashu:

Hi Ichi thank you xo!
  3:35pm Jocelyn:

Hate when addiction is called someone else's problem. It's all of us. We need to be kinder more compassionate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, The Contessa. I trust things are going well in London Town this evening.

Sake always gives me a bouncy giddy lighthearted feeling. But it's part of the Japanese way to recognize the melancholy side of everything. And alcohol is always alcohol..

The Amy Winehouse story is also diabolical in a way. Rehab was a great pop record that actually made people laugh deflecting the seriousness of her problem.

Hullo fellow bunny.
Watching 'Little Girl Blue' on AmericanMasters...it's too much for me almost. Too close to home personally for me - to be a Creative type who never will feel validated or socially complete nonetheless. To be totally frank.
Harm Reduction works - Prohibition does not. These are the plain, demonstrable facts.
As for Race - the PrisonIndustrial Complex is the new Jim Crow - no question. & now - White people will be invested in to grow cannabis by the same establishment! BilieHoliday was killed by Hoover's drug nazis.
To be a Class A drug - the Law is it cannot have *any* positive Medical benefit. Putting cannabis in this category is increasingly contradictory.

Party girls don't get hurt
Can't feel anything, when will I learn
I push it down, push it down
I'm the one "for a good time call"
Phone's blowin' up, they're ringin' my doorbell
I feel the love, feel the love
One, two, three, one, two, three, drink
One, two, three, one, two, three, drink
One, two, three, one, two, three, drink
Throw ‘em back, till I lose count
I'm gonna swing from the chandelier, from the chandelier
I'm gonna live like tomorrow doesn't exist
Like it doesn't exist
I'm gonna fly like a bird through the night, feel my tears as they dry
I'm gonna swing from the chandelier, from the chandelier
And I'm holding on for dear life, won't look down won't open my eyes
Keep my glass full until morning light, 'cause I'm just holding on for tonight
Help me, I'm holding on for dear life, won't look down won't open my eyes
Keep my glass full until morning light, 'cause I'm just holding on for tonight
On for tonight

Hey Sheila, this is a heart warming show! It's so different to hear all the songs with all the context and care you've given... I'm writing from Portugal and though of course many people still suffer from drug and alcohol abuse, everything is SO MUCH DIFFERENT ever since drugs were decriminalized. Much more peace, choice and healthy use. Best of luck for everyone struggling in the US and everywhere. The state should be your support not your enemy

It's probably inappropriate to discuss in here but a very long time ago, psychedelics saved my life. I think it's a constructive thing - from both Cultural directions - for the CounterCulture, as well as the Establishment - to consider Psychedelics as Medicine.

@Michael 98145: It's really dumb though. I had kicked it for a while, even today I don't smoke during the day. But the "higher power" talk really got under my skin
  5:45pm Sarah Montreal:

Oh/ sound of loneliness?

All good sad addiction songs

oiy ,,, yep that's me "don't have a problem like "they" do I just drink " ,,,,,,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm northguineahills:

@Sheila: As you mentioned, I, like many, have lost quite a few close friends to addiction, so, this hits me in gut. gracias por tu trabajo!
  5:46pm JakeGould:

Oh also, I kinda hate drinking to drink nowadays. I have no problem getting socially drunk every now and then. But this cultural mentality that you MUST drink if you socialize is a bit crazy.

I’ve known people who can’t see movies unless they are high or drunk. Ditto with bands. And honestly, I am not 19 anymore so why do I have to do that to enjoy something?

Sometimes for some people it’s just hard to say, “I like something because I like it…” and without some social lubricant involved.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Rob Kopp:

@Sarah: It indeed has the same feel (melody, organ) as Sam Stone!
  5:47pm cheechsweet:

One older timer in a room once said that the higher power stuff got to him too until someone told him just to substitute "the radiator" every time he said higher power. That worked for him. I realized my hang up on that was just me getting in my way again. I realized it with help. My best friend had issues with the higher power stuff too, & he's dead now. I wish he could've gotten out of his own way.
  5:47pm pomadethesun:

Great show❤️
  5:47pm cheechsweet:

"a room" being AA, that is
  5:47pm Jocelyn:

Me too. The loss of so many friends and family to addiction. It hurts. It always will.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm northguineahills:

@Jake, I don't mind drinking (about to pop a work beer), but I hate getting drunk anymore unless it's a very special occasion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Tome:

....took me a LONG too until a lot of it sank in ,,, 1 -- don't have to explain myself to no one ,, and 2 people don't do what I want them too ,, when you really let it sink in ? life is great ! ...

  5:49pm Melissa:

Have you played Janis Joplin on the show? ( sorry tuned in late)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm fred:

@JakeGould: I can't socialize without drinking enough to forget my shyness. But I don't get drunk anymore. Gotta walk home, you know, even though my boots probably know the way
  5:50pm Melissa:

Isn’t “Wizard of Oz” basically about a young girl who hates her life and family and wishes she could just fly away to Oz and never comes back? Read between those lines.

In the book Dorothy stays in Oz, the only happy place she knew. In the movie she comes back home to be a part of the Protestant work ethic of the midwest.
Avatar 5:55pm the glowing one:

@JakeGould: same... I don't like how alcohol makes me stupid. It slows my thinking down (alcohol slows inhibits the firing of neurons), which I don't like in social settings. I don't even get more sociable when drunk, how would I when I need that processing power to emphasize... studies have shown that alcohol doesn't increase empathy, it only creates the illusion the other people agree with you, while in fact they don't.

I also don't like smoking weed anymore, it shuts down all critical thinking. In retrospect that makes so much sense that I started to believe all kinds of stupid theories when in my stoner days.

I avoid drugs as much as I can. But I'm for decriminalizing all drug use and for legalizing and regulating many recreational drugs, since I pretty much agree with the argument that the current war on drugs has failed. Personally though, drugs are not a solution to me. Drug abuse is an indicator that someone is coping with certain situations in an unhealthy manner.

Thanks Tome!
  5:47pm Caroline:

Love this show and really appreciate the theme. Food issues also tie together the drug-related deaths of Karen Carpenter and Dinah Washington. I imagine for other women on this list as well, drug and alcohol abuse may have been intertwined with shame associated with body trauma - but KC and DW's jump out at me most readily. A poignant reminder of how body dysmorphia can be fatal.
  5:42pm Olga:

Sheila B, thanks for tackling this theme in such a compassionate way. It was very moving. Now I'll apologize for the sincerity of this comment. Sorry not sorry.
