Listener comments!

  12:01am dug:

nice opener, cheers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03am sberger:

Evening Jeff and all. Keeping us on our toes. Never thought I'd hear a Fall tune on TAG. Not that I mind. RIP MES.
  12:04am JefffromCanada:

Great opener!
  12:05am sfolk16:

The Mighty Amon Duul II!!!!
  12:06am Hippie Jesus:

More shows should open in this fashion......and not because someone passed away!
  12:07am dug:

first time i've heard GD on wfmu. not complaining, just saying :-D
Avatar 12:08am Jeff Conklin:

Morning, all.

Dug, you must be new to this show then ;)
  12:09am dug:

yeah. first time listener actually!
  12:10am dug:

just saw the date of the GD show. big fan of that era of the GD.
Avatar 12:10am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

Hello, good trio of opening songs.
  12:10am v:

greatful dead shit oh thanks
  12:10am JefffromCanada:

Phish was a one time thing right?
  12:10am AgentPeter:

Not a fan of 80's Dead?
Avatar 12:12am franny:

I'm ready to Dead.
  12:12am V:

I am too young to know this. didn't get to smoke the weed
Avatar 12:12am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

I was in a facebook discussion about the Greyfolded album, and one of them used the term "midi hell". I used to feel that way, but I think the midi stuff sounds cool now. I like the term though.
  12:13am Hippie Jesus:

dug - Jeff plays The Dead every week, usually in the 2nd hour.
Avatar 12:13am Jeff Conklin:

Here we go...not even 10 minutes into the show and there's the 80s shit.

Let's give it a break this week, fellas.

Phish was, at this moment, a one-time thing. But, as you know, I play whatever i want so.....
  12:14am V:

but why can't I turn it off?
  12:14am dug:

most of the dead i've ever gotten into are from 68-73. to be honest im not a super fan, but have friends who are and when i've heard something that made me say "burn me one of this show/upload the flac" its usually been from that time period.
Swag For Life Member 12:15am opurt:

Dug, keep listening... You're in for a 3 hour treat.....
  12:15am AgentPeter:

Don't know why this venue is always called Harpur College when it became SUNY-Binghamton in 1965. Or maybe I should just focus on being less pedantic...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15am northguineahills:

It's weird when I get the Dead vibe, it doesn't happen very often outside of their early studio albums.
Avatar 12:16am Jeff Conklin:

V: No need for weed. Stay and bask in the glow of the jams...
  12:16am dug:

didnt realize i was stepping in some shit. a good tune is a good tune and i'll leave it at that.
  12:16am JefffromCanada:

The dead were more jazz than people have them credit for.
Avatar 12:17am Jeff Conklin:

Dug: Keep coming back. I love my listeners and feel perfectly ok giving them copious amounts of shit and they are free to do the same ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18am sberger:

Just getting into 11/77 Binghampton DP's 25 this weekend. Completely different vibe but great show. They liked playing up there.
Avatar 12:19am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

I only recently figured out there was probably a smartphone app to listen to live shows from archive.org It's called Deadhead Archives on Android. Definitely worth it if you have unlimited data...
  12:20am JefffromCanada:

Jeff can be cantankerous. It’s a redeeming quality. He’s the dead head yelling ‘get off my lawn you freakin hipster!’ :)
Avatar 12:20am franny:

There are a lot of hipsters getting on his lawn sometimes too.
Avatar 12:21am Jeff Conklin:

@Adam: I think there are a few. People tell me about Relisten. I generally just load up my phone with stuff from my harddrive
  12:21am V:

so this by passes the weed now I get it
  12:21am MONEYBAG$:

I never heard of the dead until the singer of The National tweeted about them
  12:22am AgentPeter:

'83 show there had an epic 2nd set

for that era, of course :-)
  12:22am b k:

I have a lot of friends that love Phish, I respect them but figure if Jeff plays them it must really be their stuff most worth hearing.
  12:22am zenkoan:

bypass weed, go straight to acid, collect $200
Avatar 12:24am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

Yeah it turns out my current phone doesn't allow mciro SD cards so I have limited HD space on it. But I do have unlimited data and this app is free with no ads.
  12:24am JefffromCanada:

Phish are boring and fascinating at the same time. Gotta respect that. Or not. Who cares. :)
  12:25am zenkoan:

god I miss lou reed
Avatar 12:25am Jeff Conklin:

Avatar 12:25am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

ha ha
Avatar 12:26am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

I would welcome more Phish songs like that one. I like when they jam out. Not so much when they do bad funk covers.
  12:26am JefffromCanada:

  12:27am b k:

just saying I trust your judgement
  12:27am Hippie Jesus:

After the start of tonight’s show, I’m convinced one day Jeff will spin something Sonic Youth related.
Avatar 12:27am Jeff Conklin:

haha. i know, bk
  12:27am MONEYBAG$:

but have you heard about the jamflowman
Avatar 12:28am Jeff Conklin:

First piece of music writing I ever did was a review of Sonic Youth at Irving Plaza for my High School Newspaper. I compared them to the Dead. Wonder if my dad still has the article...
Avatar 12:28am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

You should sing Jamflowman at the Marathon live karaoke Jeff.
  12:28am dug:

GD, VU???
ive been asleep at the wheel missing this show.
Avatar 12:28am Jeff Conklin:

I have no idea what jamflowman is but I'm very scared
  12:29am JefffromCanada:

Yes some SY Nic Fit!! :)
Swag For Life Member 12:29am opurt:

Jeff, sharing any recordings from the east coast Matt Valentine shows with us tonight?
Avatar 12:30am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

Jamflowman basically sounds like if Tenacious D did a bad jam band parody.
Avatar 12:30am Jeff Conklin:

@opurt I'm not going to say yes or no or maybe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30am sberger:

True story: I had an older cousin very much into the Velvets and used to take me to shows when i was very young. I was 12 in 69 and she took me to the Stones, Allman Brothers and Led Zeppelin shows. Amazing. Can still remember all of it. But the one that I didn't get to go to was the Velvets at the Tea Party. My mother wouldn't let me go because it was a club. I'm not even sure how she would've gotten me in, but she talked up the Velvets a lot before the show and played me the first 3 lps. I really wanted to go, but I got shut down. I'm still mad about it and tell my now 96 year old mother every time I see her.
Avatar 12:31am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

my friend Rat Bastard saw the Velvets when he was like 9 years old, he went with some older cousins who were like 14.
Swag For Life Member 12:32am opurt:

Maybe is good enough ;-)
  12:32am rw:

Hello! The Guitar Amp Tapes may be my favorite VU. Crazy good.
  12:33am MONEYBAG$:

Seeing the lineups on old Tea Party calendars is insane. Boston is a million miles away from being that cool now
  12:33am JefffromCanada:

Even with this shitty quality you can here the VU magic. Could listen for hours.
Avatar 12:34am Jeff Conklin:

I love this quality, recorded from inside Lou's amp!
Avatar 12:34am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

Moe is such an underrated drummer. Anyone who likes Loaded best is a poser.
  12:35am zenkoan:

Live at the Matrix is incredible quality VU; different vibe from this set tho
Avatar 12:35am Jeff Conklin:

HAHA. Loaded has great tunes. But I'll say this, people who love that album best probably found out about VU via Phish.
  12:35am JefffromCanada:

Lou’s amp = VU Mecca!
Avatar 12:36am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

Ha ha...yeah, it does have some great songs.
  12:37am JefffromCanada:

Again with Phish!! I sense a Tweezer coming on the show tonight. Heh.
Avatar 12:38am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

I associate Loaded with being at parties when I was 21 and trying to find something to put on, but all they'd have was like a bunch of Rancid albums and the only rap albums were the Beastie Boys.
  12:38am sfolk16:

Amon Duul II! what a sweet gift from Myrrors!!!!
Avatar 12:38am Fox:

  12:38am b k:

Wondering if you have found boots of the shows Neal Ranaldo and friends played in Chicago during the Fare Thee Well Shows?
Avatar 12:39am Jeff Conklin:

@BK: Nooooooooooo. And heads have been looking...
Avatar 12:39am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

@bk oh yeah, I was also curious about those shows...

real outcasty
Swag For Life Member 12:44am opurt:

I have some video of Alex Bleeker trying out some of the songs in Big Sur before the Chicago Fare Thee Well Shows. I wish that I recorded the entire set.
  12:45am Hippie Jesus:

@Jeff - I hope Mr. Conklin has your SY article and you take pics and tweet it out.
Avatar 12:45am Jeff Conklin:

@Hippie: I'm gonna ask him to take a look, we'll see
  12:48am MONEYBAG$:

I think Lee went to SUNY Binghamton, to bring it full circle
  12:49am rw:

Hey Jeff, I've Been enjoying all the R. Thompson lately too. Thanks, man.
  12:50am MONEYBAG$:

and SUNY Binghamton was where I first saw SY...
Avatar 12:53am Jeff Conklin:

@rw: my pleasure. he's the best. it's easy work
  12:56am BEAVO:

Are you a fan of Roy Harper Jeff
  12:57am BEAVO:

Ride the Scree
  12:58am BEAVO:

Yeah it’s Harper College
  12:58am BEAVO:

SUNY Shmoney
  12:59am J:

Late to the convo, but as cool as it is, Loaded is def not the Velvets best albums. People that claim that tend to buy their music at Starbucks or something... it's a good commercial effort, though
  12:59am BEAVO:

It’s a it’s a Dicks picks
  1:01am BEAVO:

The Fall. Have been getting a lot of airplay. On FM you lately
Avatar 1:02am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

People whose favorite VU album is Loaded are like the Fall "fans" whose favorite album is This Nation's Saving Grace! ;-)
  1:02am J:

80s Dead? Why? Shit is awful
Avatar 1:02am Fox:

I enjoy eating cabbage.
Avatar 1:04am Jeff Conklin:

I like some Roy Harper, yes.
Avatar 1:05am joeray:

For me, the best Mark E Smith/Fall project was with the experimental dancer Micheal Clark and filmmaker Charles Atlas.
Avatar 1:06am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

For me the best Fall project was MES and my grandma on bongos. It was incredible.
  1:06am J:

@Adam interesting parallel there, actually. TNSG is totally solid however. I'd say it's way more of an artistic success than Loaded ever was.
  1:07am tonyb:

It was the age of wisdom, the age of foolishness ( the 80's ). Kind of like our journey to oxford speedway one 4th...
Avatar 1:07am Jeff Conklin:

Cabbage is for Loaded/This Nations Saving Grace fans
Avatar 1:08am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

Yeah, I was just giving Jeff "the business", it's definitely the album I'd recommend to anyone asking what Fall album to check out first. This Nation's Saving Grace is excellent.
  1:08am MONEYBAG$:

John Mayer and Granny on bongos are going on tour as Fall
  1:09am MONEYBAG$:

Fall and Company
Avatar 1:09am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

Also it was annoying to see that "your granny on bongos" quote so much, we probably wouldn't remember the Fall so much if it weren't for the musicians on those earlier albums, Brix especially, she's an amazing guitarist.
  1:10am dug:

keep the hits coming!
Avatar 1:10am Jeff Conklin:

I love that quote and will always love that quote
  1:10am J:

I thought this was a Mayer free zone?
  1:10am MONEYBAG$:

My first Fall album was Seminal Live so I'm the only person on earth who likes it apparently
Avatar 1:10am Jeff Conklin:

You guys haven't scared dug off yet!
Avatar 1:10am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

it is a good quote.
  1:11am J:

And I thought Mickey Hart WAS granny on bongos already, no?
Avatar 1:12am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

Also MES's quote about throwing a beer bottle at "Son of Mumford or whatever" and his band telling him "they're number 5 on the charts"
  1:12am BEAVO:

@Jeff Conklin I’ve been listening to his BBC recordings A lot of great acoustic and electric stuff. Early 70s.
  1:13am J:

You forgot the part where MES suggested putting an injunction on Pavement for plagiarizing The Fall #twostates
  1:13am MONEYBAG$:

Mickey Hart is a pair of sneakers rolling around in the dryer
  1:14am J:

  1:14am J:

Avatar 1:14am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

That kicks ass though. Mickey rules.
Avatar 1:15am Jeff Conklin:

That Mickey joke is older than me. And I'm pretty old...
Avatar 1:16am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

I will watch any footage of him talking about how psyched he is on the instruments he built for the Space sections...he kicks ass.
  1:16am MONEYBAG$:

I actually liked Mickey's band, but he didn't do a whole lot other than whack things with a mallet
Avatar 1:18am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

I wish Mickey would hook up with like some NNCK or Sunburned heads or something and make an album...
  1:18am J:

The newest Mickey joke is that he's touring with John Mayer
Avatar 1:19am Jeff Conklin:

If you haven't listen to Mickey's "Music to Be Born By", amazing stuff.
Avatar 1:21am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

I haven't, I'll check it out!
Avatar 1:22am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

I haven't listened to this TD album in a while, I forgot how great it is...
Avatar 1:23am BEAVO:

The latest Mickey joke? Someone has way too much time on their hands.
Avatar 1:24am BEAVO:

What is there this huge backlog of Mickey jokes?
  1:25am Hippie Jesus:

@adam - I 2nd that!

@jeff - for those who don’t instagram, is Chrissy on the twitters? #JapanesePsych
  1:26am J:

Someone? They're called "Deadheads"
Avatar 1:27am BEAVO:

I guess the Billy and Bobby Jokes are all the same as they’re all working with Mayer?
Avatar 1:27am Jeff Conklin:

Avatar 2:44am Jeff Conklin:

Thanks, Dave. Saw you at Myrrors sorry we didnt get to chat!
  2:46am Konstantinov:

Jeff, last week you mentioned how it was cool when you'd meet a listener at a show, and they'd mention that they probably wouldn't have been at the gig if not for hearing the artist on your show. Well I just walked in the door from checking out Forma -- first heard them here, so thanks! Great set from them tonight
