Been looking forward to this program.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Afternoon, Irwin! Super psyched for today's show. May as well just go over to Amazon and order the book…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm JP from KC:

Hiya Irwin! Excited to hear lots of Moondog and Moondog-related tunes today!
Avatar 3:03pm rbxbx:

 stoked for this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm JtotheK:

also looking forward to this program...
Avatar 3:05pm Parq:

Greg, you won't regret it. It's engrossing, and it comes with a cool CD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Greg from ZONE 5:

@Parq: Sweet! Just punched it in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm JtotheK:

@greg - I was thinking the same thing...I really need to read the book...
  3:24pm Cliff:

The world is goin' to hell on 4/4 time - ain't that the truth!
  3:26pm Cliff:

(I wonder what Moondog thought of Eno's original experiments with ambient music.....)
Avatar 3:29pm Parq:

That BB&HC was stunning.
  3:30pm wild neil:

peace. Cliff you ok?
  3:30pm Cliff:

I'm great, wild neil. How you doin'?
  3:31pm Cliff:

Don't worry about me, I'm staying plenty hydrated 'n stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Michael 98145:

Love this
Avatar 3:35pm βrian:

Ah, my favorite ...
  3:35pm Cliff:

And I just took my daily dose of probiotics
  3:36pm Marie:

Great show! Thanks Irwin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm JP from KC:

Still peaking, Cliff?
  3:38pm Marie:

Who could blame him for staying in Germany!? He probably got a lot more respect there and better care.
  3:39pm Cliff:

Peaked a few hours ago, on the smoooooth plateau now.
Avatar 3:40pm Michael:

Mr. Scruff does a take on Bird's Lament on "Get a Move On".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm JtotheK:

@Michael - I heard that Mr Scruff track long before I knew about Moondog... and that (Mr Scruff) song was also used in a Lincoln car company commercial at one point...
Avatar 3:42pm βrian:

Baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm JtotheK:

Pannonica de Koenigswarter ?
  3:44pm Fredericks:

Nico, wasn't it Irwin?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm JP from KC:

@Cliff: Glad to hear things are groovy for you, my friend. @JtotheK: I heard that track a long time ago, too. and You're right! I couldn't remember the car company, but I knew it had been on a car commercial somewhat recently.
  3:44pm Cliff:

This interview is amazing to listen to, and this man amazing to hear about.
Avatar 3:48pm Parq:

Marie, @ 2:38 -- that's explored at some length in the book. In Europe, he found all of the adulation and respect as a serious musician and composer that he was denied in the States. Small wonder that there are no memorial concerts planned for the centennial here, but there are several planned in Europe.
  3:50pm Courtney of Morris:

I'm always confused is this joe frank week?
  3:50pm Cliff:

Nope, that was last week!
  3:52pm Listening Out There:

I like it. Scotto will learn who R. Stevie Moore is...
  3:53pm Listening Out There:

This is Joe Moondog week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm JP from KC:

Thanks for reminding me, Cliff! I still haven't listened to last week's show. Looks like I'll be tuning in to the archives this evening.

Avatar 4:03pm geezerette:

Steel Drums! :)
  4:03pm Cliff:

Hey, how you doin'? I'm great, now! Though it was a little touch-and-go during Ken's show (man, that guy, I wanna strangle him sometimes....)
  4:05pm Fredericks:

This Hopper piece, sounds like They Might Be Giants gone Caribbean.
  4:05pm Marie:

@ Parq--hey, thanks for the info. I definitely want to read the book! I'm glad he at least got all that good stuff over in Europe. I have pondered moving over there (Marseille), myself (I have an Irish passport).
  4:15pm Cliff:

Btw, my Tarot reading this morning was King of Pentacles / XVIII. The Moon / 2 of Pentacles. Look up their images, all seem highly relevant!
Avatar 4:16pm geezerette:

@Cliff: I'm good,(if you mean me ). Haven't listened today until now, missed Ken's show. Check out my profile page if you want,no Madonnas alas but other things.
  4:19pm jan:

Great birthday party for Moon Dog. Irwin, you mentioned how many NYC tourists photographed Moon Dog: I did, too, on trips from Long Island!( Photos lost long ago.) But it was only after moving to NYC and hearing Moon Dog played by David Garland and Irwin, that I learned about the man and his incredible music,
Avatar 4:19pm geezerette:

Ready for your adventure? I'm checking out Tarot. :)
  4:20pm Mark R:

Digging this organ music
  4:20pm Cliff:

Yes, YOU! Glad to hear you're doing well, geezerette. Ken had a great interview this morning, but those animgifs, man.....I don't ever wanna see Richard Nixon blinkin' his eyes at me like that ever again
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm JP from KC:

With you on that one, Cliff. I don't even need to be under the influence to find those Nixon gifs unnerving.
  4:22pm Mark R:

Speaking of Nixon, if you think HE had an enemy's list, what do you think THIS guy's gonna have?
  4:23pm Cliff:

JP, ever watch Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas? There's a wonderful scene where Raoul Duke is succumbing to the effects of adrenochrome while 5 televisions all tuned to Richard Nixon are saying things only Richard Nixon would say.
Avatar 4:24pm Parq:

Mark R, a Losers/Haters List.
Avatar 4:25pm geezerette:

HAHA! He was a character! I'll check out the archive for that.
His eyes were actually beady.
  4:25pm Cliff:

That guy, man. Jeeez.

But this organ music, great!
  4:25pm rf:

  4:25pm Marie:

I could see some of this being really good in a soundtrack, like that Logrundr XIX...
Avatar 4:28pm geezerette:

Regarding Nixon quotes, my favorite is,"We are NOT invading Cambodia".
  4:28pm Marie:

poor guy--blind and motherless--but so strong and sensitive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm JP from KC:

Ha! I totally remember that scene. Classic. I love that Benicio Del Toro's character is slowly turning into the hairy monster with tits on his back that he himself is talking about in the same scene. Been a while since I've seen that film.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm JtotheK:

wait, Moondog relatives in Wisconsin? Interesting.
Avatar 4:29pm Parq:

I'm glad the movies finally gave The Gonz the treatment he deserved. "Where The Buffalo Roam" was one of the worst pictures I've ever seen.
  4:31pm Cliff:

Where in Germany did Moondog end up? I may be able to check it out later this summer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm JP from KC:

@Parq: Agreed. It had some redeeming comedic value, but overall, it was terrible. one of Peter Boyle's worst performances as well.
  4:35pm Cliff:

Chicago, and Blood, Sweat & Tears! Whoa
Avatar 4:37pm geezerette:

Cliff,Tarot looking good!
  4:38pm Cliff:

I know, right?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Carmichael:

If it hasn't been said yet, Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit! Heya Irwin and compatriots.
  4:40pm Cliff:

I didn't even look up the traditional readings or nuthin', I was just going by the imagery and what they've been saying about Moondog during this interview. But yeah, smack dab in the middle of my Tarot spread is a dog howlin' at the moon!
Avatar 4:41pm geezerette:

...with enthusiasm! Full speed ahead!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Michael 98145:

@Cliff, i believe he died in Münster, germany
  4:46pm Cliff:

Thanks, Michael 98145. Looks like it'll be about a 3-hour train ride from Prague.
Avatar 4:47pm geezerette:

Moondog+cheese, gromit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Michael 98145:

what about sharks' rights, what about punks' rights
Avatar 4:49pm Parq:

Moondog photographed by Weegee! Yow!
Avatar 4:49pm Henry:

what about shipwrights
Avatar 4:51pm geezerette:

Can't believe Moondog never scored a film.
  4:52pm Cliff:

"Did he wish sometimes that he had been born in ancient or medieval times where he could find romance?

"No," he said earnestly. "You can be yourself in any age. You don’t have to follow the herd."

(from Parq's link)

  4:59pm JakeGould:

“Yeah, I just got a call. I yell ‘Cartwright! Cartwright!,’ just like that. Nobody came up, I hang up.”
Avatar 5:00pm geezerette:

What about playwrights?
  5:01pm Cliff:

I gotta say, two awesome interviews in one day, you're really knockin' it outta the park today WFMU!!
Avatar 5:04pm TDK60:

I've loved Moondog's music for many years. Sadly, apparently, politically he was monarchist, regressive.
Avatar 5:08pm geezerette:

Well I see what you all mean about the Nixon Gif ,but those are some scary eggs!
  5:09pm Cliff:

Yeah, imagine looking at all of those while peaking on acid. THANKS KEN!
  5:10pm Cliff:

(But don't worry, nothing a little Ativan couldn't take care of)
Avatar 5:10pm Evan From Seattle:

Absolutely love this track
  5:11pm Cliff:

This is beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It's interesting - saw a rather long (& very good) program about Philip Glass on PBS - & in that his two major musical mentors are made out to be his Classical teacher - & Ravi Shankar, from whom they say Glass got the insight that in Indian Classical all notes are emphasized equally. No mention of Moondog in that that I recall. Yet - here on Irwin's he's played Moondog pieces that make the connection immediately apparent...
Oh! I loves 'Forbidden Planet' - Bebe and Louis Barron :
  5:14pm Cliff:

I'm thinking about the influences of Minimalism into pop music - The Necks and Godspeed You Black Emperor! are two bands that come to mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I think of the figures that were of the Beat era in the 1950s that were 'weirder' than the Jack Kerouacs ? - like eden ahbez & Lord Buckley...a touch more proto-Hippie - but these guys were still quite singular...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...people like Zappa, & various others in his periphery retained some of that (ahbez was West Coast)...
Avatar 5:21pm drewo:

Thanks Irwin. My dad would tell me stories about seeing Moondog on the streets - I'm reminded to ask him about that.
  5:21pm Cliff:

I was always partial to Gary Snyder. Still alive and kickin' too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Harrys Partch & Smith, 'cetera...
Avatar 5:22pm geezerette:

& Michael McClure
  5:24pm Cliff:

John Giorno? He was pretty interesting in the documentary Flicker, about Brion Gysin (and one of the few people making an appearance who didn't seem completely strung-out and brain-fried....so was Kenneth Anger)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...even Mingus & Sun Ra...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Michael 98145:

Speaking of Harry Partch: music.washington.edu...
  5:26pm Cliff:

Actually Iggy Pop was in Flicker too, and he seemed relatively on top of things in his own weird way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm chris:

gah! just tuning in... so happy there are archives. i would be crying otherwise.
Avatar 5:30pm Sem Chumbo:

Pretty great show, Irwin. Thanks so much.
Avatar 5:31pm geezerette:

There's something Elizabethan about Moondog.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Great performance of this piece.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...self-mythologizing - Collective Unconscious...
Avatar 5:32pm geezerette:

Michael98145: great link!
  5:33pm Cliff:

The one question I keep asking myself these past 2-1/2 hours is, why the heck haven't I ever heard of this guy before?! Moondog is such a genius.
  5:34pm Zak:

So much great Moondog!

How about the album he did with Julie Andrews of old English children's songs. It's pretty magical.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Right - all my life I knew Moondog was 'that weird-dressing guy on the street'...like before Irwin's program, I knew Harry Partch made weird instruments - I didn't know him as Composer yet...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm Stevel:

Most of the Moondog info is new to me as well, although much of the music is familiar. Great show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm JtotheK:

Great show - thanks Irwin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm Lewis:

This is such an amazing composition! One of my all time favorites and a spectacular ear worm...
