Options Brian Turner: Playlist from November 10, 2015 Options

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

The Ex with Ken Vandermark  Live at WFMU's Monty Hall 10/23/15   Options     In case you weren't able to attend, Brian Turner's program put together a night at WFMU's Monty Hall on October 23rd headlined by The Ex (who were joined by Ken Vandermark on sax), and he'll be airing the full set on his program today at 4PM ET. But as a special bonus during the broadcast, you can simultaneously view the entire video of the set shot multi-cam that night, via Ustream linked from WFMU's home page! See Holland's greatest musical exports blow the roof off the joint in front of a full house of attendees, and while it may not be the same as "being there", you will get a pretty good idea of why this band's not-frequent-enough US tours are the stuff of legend. The Ex are in their 37th year of existence, and listeners may remember they performed one of WFMU's 50th Anniversary shows with a full big band and an assortment of Ethiopian musicians on a colossal Lincoln Center Outdoors bill in 2008. Today, you'll see a comparatively stripped-down core lineup of Terrie Hessels, Katherina Bornefeld, Arnold DeBoer, and Andy Moor tear up the smaller confines of Monty Hall with the help of Vandermark. Enormous thanks to The Ex and Ken, Tony B., Liz Berg, Ruth Hayduk, Mario Santana, Scott Konzelmann, John Shin. UPDATE: The archived video of the show is now up on WFMU's Vimeo Page. Avatar 4:33pm KP:

Avatar 4:33pm Kevlicki:

And the Lincoln Center show, mentioned in the playlist, was THE best outdoor live performance I've ever been to. It had the most celebratory and contrasted attendees I've ever seen at a show.
The Ethiopian folks dancing side by side with punks! such a blast
  4:36pm Tony:

Thanks Brian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm joe:

Will the 75 Dollar Bill performance from that night be going on FMA as well?
  4:38pm P-90:

It appears those of us who use Mac can't see the video because of the Apple/Flash Player non-truce. Maybe it will stream for us when it's on Vimeo?
  4:38pm P-90:

Sounds great anyhoo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Liz Berg:

Hey P-90, which browser are you using? Maybe switch to a different one, it's working great for me on a Mac w/Firefox. You may also want to try watching from the WFMU app if you have a smartphone.
Avatar 4:41pm Cheyenne:

Hey @joe - we didn't get 75 Dollar Bill to sign off on the FMA, but The Ex did. That set will be up pretty soon!
Avatar 4:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

  4:50pm P-90:

Weirdly, My (recent) Mac was giving me the "need Flash Player" on Firefox, but I tried safari and its working...
Avatar 4:50pm Brian Turner:

@Kevlicki thanks for those words - yeah, one of the best parts of that day was the fact every faction of attendee was there having a great time, Lincoln Center Ladies Who Lunch, noise kids, local Ethios, was a great day. The widow of Lincoln Center Outdoors' founder told me that her husband would have loved that show which was a top notch endorsement. But with the Ex at the steering wheel of a gig, they should be in places that size for every show they do.
Avatar 4:52pm Cecile:

this taped gig has given me a second wind.

Thanks WFMU for broadcasting this. I didn't get to go to any of the NYC area shows but I did have the chance to see The Ex in Boston during this tour. If only they had more recognition here in the USA so that these tours didn't have to be so infrequent!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Ken From Hyde Park:

It's like Austin City Limits, but WFMU-style!
  5:01pm P-90:
