That's ok, Simon. We welcome you just as much as those who are flush with disposable income.

Wednesday is payday, tweet me @bnrsstlfr and I'll happily contribute again. The app is really buggy tonight ...
Avatar 3:20am
Jeff Conklin:

What's going on with the app?
Avatar 3:21am

I keep getting "streaming error" or long periods of buffering.

Great show!

Jeff Conklin:

try wfmu.org/mobile and one of the non-app buttons?
Avatar 3:35am
Jeff Conklin:

Thanks, FKATS@TCT!
Avatar 3:36am

And like that the app is running smoothly, it must have wanted me to hear this awesome Hills track.

Hey Jeff, listening & enjoying. Thanks man.

Was just listening to some Yusef Lateef Eastern Sounds before coming over here and finding the Shepp hits somewhere near the same spot.

(and not having any troubles with the Android app FWIW)

Thanks for checking in, [Dan?] Bodahbot

This Archie Shepp is boss!
Avatar 4:02am

Good morning @all. I love the bird sounds! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05am
Dan Bodah:

I wondered if you had put a LDP record on underneath the Shepp -- that synth was so well integrated and somewhat unexpected in the piece. Excellent.
Avatar 4:07am
Jeff Conklin:

Ha. Definitely not, Dan ;)

Dan Bodah:

Someone on Discogs says in comments that the title track of the Shepp record includes "romulus franceschini, donald F.cooper (electronics)" -- and I see Burrell credited on electric piano, which maybe didn't make those crazy sounds back in 1970-71? Not sure if this commenter knows of what he speaks, but it'd be worth exploring. (Apparently they weren't credited on the liners.)
Avatar 4:15am
Jeff Conklin:

Yeah, it doesn't seem likely it was Burrell. Maybe it was the producer?

Whut's so funny 'bout the understanding raga?

Hey, Simon

Howdy Jeff. Sometimes it's easier to drift into a show from a horizontal position.

I totally get it, Simon.

Android app working fine here in San Francisco

Right on, wombat, thanks for letting me know. I get freaked out!

Ken From Hyde Park:

My Android phone updated to Lollipop recently. I've found the wifi connection to be less robust than before. When the streaming app acts flaky, I've found that turning the phone's wifi off and on again helps sometimes. Another thing that helps is to close down the app and restart it.
Avatar 4:34am

Sounds like Eno/Fripp

Ironically, I haven't had any trouble since you mentioned it on-air.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38am
pacific standard simon:

My Kindle uses a version of the android app, and it always works just fine, but, since it doesn't allow me to log in as me, I haven't fallen in love with it.

Thanks for the tip, Ken!

I can't get any reception/apps with the dog eared copy of 'Shakey' I'm reading :(

Not even Pono?

great show as always jeff. you make monday mornings a little more tolerable. great music here.

I don't believe the Android app works with the Galaxy S6. Not the app's fault though. I'm writing an app for another station, and encountered the problem myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42am
pacific standard simon:

Maaan, try making some aluminum foil rabbit ears on that thing.
Avatar 4:43am
Jeff Conklin:

Aw thanks, Tomas! Glad to be of service.

Has anybody ACTUALLY used a PONO?

I've eaten a Toblerone, does that count?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47am

"Not me!", as the kids in Family Circus might say.

The earliest use of Frippertronics I can find is in the song "2 HB" on the first Roxy Music album. Although I suspect it goes back earlier to Terry Riley or Stephen Reich.

"Hear the lark and harken to the barking of the dog fox

leaving the bay area in 2000 was one of the best things i have ever done. ugh. the worst of all possible worlds.

I left San Francisco in 2013. My landlord was happy to see me go, because I was paying about $1100 a month for a "2 1/2 bedroom", after 17 years of rent control. I'm sure, after looking at the Craigslist posts, that the rent was at least tripled or quadrupled when I left. BTW, the apartment only had one real bedroom.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16am
pacific standard simon:

The others were the living room, and an enclosed porch, which actually were used as shared rentals in the apartment below us.
Avatar 5:17am
Jeff Conklin:

That's crazy, Simon. I'm holding on in Brooklyn by a thread....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23am
pacific standard simon:

Part of me wishes I was still holding on there, as a point of pride, but the place was falling apart at the seams, and I'm sure they were about to offer us a buyout anyway.

Did he say, "Take it, Jesus"? I'd love to hear a baseball player say that when he was up to bat.

I can understand how Brewer & Shipley were never going to be all that hip after their big hit, but I still wish they could have been, anyway. Bet a lot of people my age would feel the same way.
Avatar 5:36am

Ha, Simon. That's why you need (slightly) younger guys around like me to hear them in a new context...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38am

Very true, I guess.

Maybe FMU should go out on the street with recording equipment and broadcast buskers live. Or don't you have street buskers there?

There's a street soprano sax player here who can't find the melody to "Harlem Nocturne"' with both hands, but it's entertaining to listen to him try.
