Listener comments!

  9:02pm Cooh John:

What was I going to say?
  9:05pm ?:

hi cheri!
  9:13pm cheri:

hello efd, tell me when will you have the disco dance party again? that's always fun!
  9:17pm daveB:

Very alliterative band name and song title!
  9:19pm P-90:

Ciao efd and My Girl Kiki! Who played bass on this?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm efd:

Not a pattern that recurs on that album, sadly, daveB!

cheri, as a matter of fact the disco dance party show will be NEXT WEEK! You heard (well, read) it here first!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm efd:

P-90, that is Gary Twigg playing the fretless bass, as it is listed.
  9:21pm P-90:

Avatar 9:23pm Loretta:

I always enjoy your disco dance party, Evan, although I must admit I never had any love for disco in its day.
  9:23pm cheri:

thanks efd, i'm so looking forward to it,i really can't wait!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm efd:

is that a bass-playing name I should know, P-90?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm Stevel:

I hope Gary Twigg was skinny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm efd:

I didn't really either, Loretta! I even had a shirt made up with those iron on letters that said "Disco Sucks" (that my Mom wouldn't let me wear), but I came around.
  9:26pm P-90:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm BLCKDGRD:

Thanks for that Blackjacks! Throbbing Lobster - need go find my Bill Lloyd and O Positive.
Avatar 9:28pm Loretta:

I remember those shirts Evan......... brings back memories.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm efd:

ah, P-90, Pip Williams produced that Kiki Dee record so it all ties together!
  9:28pm JakeGould:

It can’t be understated how powerful/pervasive that whole 1970s “Disco Sucks” cultural movement was.
  9:28pm cheri:

efd I got to cut just for a while, but hope i'll be back later tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm efd:

I have no doubt that you'll return, cheri.
  9:30pm daveB:

This guy borrowed a few tricks from The Sweet's lead singer.
Avatar 9:36pm Danne D:

Hi EFD :)
Hi Funk Fans :)
  9:36pm ?:

Accuplaylist herpies always comes back
  9:37pm P-90:

Check Mr. Twigg's "Recordings" page: sessions for everyone from Elton, Brian May, and Rod Stewart to Chris de Burg, Enya, and Barry Gibb. Really liked what he did for that Kiki Dee track...
  9:45pm daveB:

That Holly G song was good stuff
  9:46pm P-90:

And two snaps up for Holly Golightly!
  9:47pm JakeGould:

Terence P. Minogue has his own website: “Terence P. Minogue has a long, varied history in composition, including two RIAA Certified Gold Records for his arrangements on Jim Croce’s I Got A Name LP and “I Have to Say I Love You (in a song).” Minogue has arranged for more than 200 recordings and worked for many major labels, including Warner Bros., CBS/Epic (now Sony), RCA, Atlantic, Capitol, AVCO-Embassy, ABC, United Artists, MidSong International, A&M Buddah, and LifeSong, where Minogue was a Director of A&R for seven years.” www.terencepminogue.com...

Hiya Herb :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm efd:

thanks for that, JakeGould!

Greetins Danne and herb!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm Figgsrock:

That FFS lp is outstanding. One of my favorites of this year.
  9:54pm JakeGould:

@ef: You’re welcome! I don’t think he is related to Kylie Minogue, but he does have one well treaded 1970s credits to his name. And now he’s into religion.
  9:56pm herb.nyc:

(in shower,
  9:59pm JakeGould:

@herb.nyc: I’m making french fries. Language, please.
  10:07pm JakeGould:

This Heminger song is just so wonderfully dorky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm Ike & the Head of a Dead Ram:

I'm pretty sure the french fries can't hear Herb taking a shower.
  10:10pm JakeGould:

If I burn these fries there will be heck to pay.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Ike & Ram:

But what does that have to do with Herb's shower? I'm so confused.
  10:12pm JakeGould:

Herb said he was in the shower just as I put them in the oven.
Avatar 10:12pm Andrew S:

My Iphone once corrected Kylie Monogue to Kylie Minotaur. It was the only time I wasnt annoyed by the correction
Avatar 10:19pm Danne D:

yay :)
Avatar 10:20pm Danne D:

I've heard these guys have some pretty famous friends :D

Avatar 10:23pm Danne D:

That Michael Shelley premium is essential
Avatar 10:24pm Danne D:

Avatar 10:24pm steve:

  10:25pm Cooh John:

I got my Michael Shelley premium.
Avatar 10:25pm Aharon:

Long Bawls isn't sure how he feels about this.
Avatar 10:27pm Danne D:

@Aharon - you'll just resume winning the league for the 90th year in a row.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm Stevel:

Hemmingers! They've been through Fort Wayne a time or two. Michigan, I think? Fun.
Avatar 10:27pm Danne D:

Though as a Jays fan I'm happy that all of my fantasy players seem to have gotten traded to them and they're winning :)
Avatar 10:28pm Aharon:

@Danne: I have a feeling tonight I slip to a gentleman's second.
Avatar 10:28pm Danne D:

only temporary Aharon. We all know this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Ike & Ram:

Did Kylie Minotaur have lots of #1 hits in Atlantis despite being a one- or two-hit wonder up on the surface world?
Avatar 10:29pm Danne D:

She had an amazing career Ike
Avatar 10:31pm Aharon:

@Danne: true! 2nd is on the way to 3rd! Or 5th!
Avatar 10:33pm Danne D:

Aharaon you're gonna pull like 9 more trades and squash me like a grape. Or a squash.
  10:33pm Cooh John:

I am confused. Ken Carter/Ken Lewis/John Carter? Scratching my head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm efd:

Ken Lewis/John Carter. Did I mix them up? It wouldn't surprise me the way this week has gone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm efd:

oh nm I see what I did
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm coelacanth:

olá efd and funkies
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm efd:

greetings coel!
  10:41pm Cooh John:

Wow. Good stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm coelacanth:

hmm,i 've never heard this original version. 'perfect for herman's hermits. did they write other HH songs?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm efd:

I think that was the only one, but not 100% sure.
Avatar 10:45pm Danne D:

Hi coelacanth :)
  10:50pm Cooh John:

Do I hear Brian Wilson being channeled?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm coelacanth:

Yes i think that was the only one, and now i think it's quite different than most of the carter-lewis songs.(which are much more Jan & Dean/beach boys-esque)

Hi Danne!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm efd:

Certainly an influence... John Carter talked about that a little when I interviewed him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm coelacanth:

(i can't hear the interview segments so much. i have to keep the volume very low here tonight- which would be frustrating for bass or rhythm-oriented music; but for this melodic stuff it's fortunately still enjoyable.)
  11:00pm cheri:

efd, i came back just to say goodnight, and i wouldn't miss next weeks dance party for the world!
  11:07pm b:

that second show sounds terrifying
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm coelacanth:

Evan i get the impression from wikipedia that that song was recorded in '81...but it's pretty vague.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm Uncle Michael:

  11:11pm JakeGould:

Hey Uncle Michael, how’s it hanging?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm Tome:

Great stuff once again EFD !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm Uncle Michael:

With the Cubs 16 games over .500, it does not hang.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm efd:

hi Uncle Michael! Maybe you remember, since it was your show where I first heard it - what IS the story with that "Silicon City" song??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm Uncle Michael:

There's a story? Hmm...seems like there should be simply because it sounds like a more recent recording than other so-called Flowerpot Men or whatever releases. It's a Tony Burrows thing but I see you and I have it credited to different "artists." It's been a long time since I researched it.
  11:17pm cheri:

well efd goodnight for real, but next week i'm going to feel like a dancing queen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm coelacanth:

...judging by a few different websites, i think it was recorded in 1981 to put on the b side of a reissue of "...san francisco".
(but again- vague!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm Uncle Michael:

Is the let's go to SF on the a-side a different version than the flowerpot men version?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm efd:

the single I have credits it to Carter/Lewis - no mention of Burrows, though he could be on the record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm efd:

the a-side is "Let's go BACK to San Francisco," so yeah not the same as the original
Avatar 11:19pm Danne D:

Sounds like a funky Yes :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm Uncle Michael:

My guess is that I saw it was a b-side to LGTSF and assume that I was seeing a miscredit for the artist and thought since it was a Flowerpot release, the b-side was too. I assumed too much.

I see my mistake.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm Uncle Michael:

Odds are Burrows is on neither side.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm Santos L Halper:

Loving this fringe benefit. Bring it for your next battle with Clay
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm Uncle Michael:

I'm generally trying to research the original release for something that may be on a comp. It's a risky proposal.
  11:22pm Ballou:

A Jersey boy at heart, it's kinda F-Ing awesome that I can listen to WFMU on my way home from work in Los Angeles
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm Cubicle Carl:

Oh man, EFD, this shopping track is the bomb.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm efd:

hey Ballou, very cool that you're listening out there! We live in amazing times.

Agree on Shopping, Cubicle Carl!
Avatar 11:25pm steve:

much good Shopping, very
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm Uncle Michael:

I blast FMU all over Topeka.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm efd:

Santos, that was another Florida find! Just picked it up yesterday.
Avatar 11:26pm steve:

disco next week?
  11:26pm JakeGould:

That Chinese proverb about living in interesting times is all about the Internet and streaming and comments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm efd:

Uncle Michael, I will try to get the straight story on that Beautiful People record at some point and will report back.
Avatar 11:29pm steve:

wait yes i found the comment saying as much, nm. very sleepy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm efd:

yes, next week is the annual Disco Dance Party show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm coelacanth:

...the 1981 release of ...san francisco is def a newer recording than the (much better) 1967 album version.
that's my story and i'm sticking to it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm Stevel:

Great show tonight. Helping me through a seemingly-fruitless online search for a short-term apartment in Chicago for my son. (Head. Hurts.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm Santos L Halper:

Ah, just seeing the FL theme; another Clay Connection. And on Capricorn to boot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm efd:

the thing is, coelacanth, that the Flowerpot Men CD that I have includes "Let's Go Back To..." and says that it was recorded in 1969 but not released.

My head hurts too.
  11:30pm cheri:

evan, I've just been looking at the program schedule and I don't see the "disco dance party" event anywhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm efd:

yes, well, that's because I haven't sent anyone a listing for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm efd:

Now my head hurts more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm coelacanth:

Avatar 11:33pm steve:

disco cures all
  11:34pm cheri:

well i'll be back next week efd! again i'm looking forward to it.thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm coelacanth:

yeah it could've been recorded in '69,then mastered all shiny in '81.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm efd:

I'm more inclined to believe the CD liner notes that it was recorded and 1969 and unreleased, though I do think maybe some additional tracks/instruments were added before the single came out in '81.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm Tome:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm coelacanth:

well i agree! i didn't know they said that and nothing i came across mentioned it... not that liner notes can't be a big joke, that's still a more believable source than all the ones i've just explored.
  11:46pm JakeGould:

@Tome: Oy! I believe it’s “Oi! Oi! Oi!”
  11:46pm JakeGould:

Disco teaser? Yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm Stevel:

Disco Teaser was not my stripper name.
  11:48pm JakeGould:

@Stevel: Yeah, yours was Disco Nailgun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm coelacanth:

Thank you efd!
ciao people
  11:50pm JakeGould:

Mine was Disco Sander.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm Stevel:

Due primarily to my special 'dance'. Had to see it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm Stevel:

  11:51pm JakeGould:

I liked to use #60 grit to make sure the ladies are stripped all the way down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks for the music, EFD. Night all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm efd:
