Options Brian Turner: Playlist from March 24, 2015 Options

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Amen, Lopez. This weather sucks ass.

Hey Brian! Howdy, Listeners!
Avatar 3:06pm Simon P:

Spring tries but ice falls from the sky. Greetings.
Avatar 3:07pm Lopez:

I'm protesting the cold by being a grubby basement dweller crouched at my computer with headphones
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Stepchild:

So much for the narrow-width playlist. Awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm DCE:

hey BT
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Greg from Bloomfield:

Congrats on another successful Marathon, BT!
Avatar 3:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm fleep:

No, I doubt any of us were.
Avatar 3:18pm Bas NL:

Pheww! Here's to another year of healthy dissonant weirdness! Make it a good one Mr. Turner!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm fleep:

Greg that is such a fine giffitude, the little touches like the hat spinning and the feet leaving the ground and the fireworks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Guido from Cologne:

Hell Jesus!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Stepchild:

@fleep: Concurrence!!
  3:21pm Matthew Hord:

there's also a very warm, very pleasant sensation that washes over you when you pledge, making you feel all is well with the world... give it a try, mistercaz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm blee:

Pledge now, pledge often.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm DCE:

this guy just came through town but I missed 'im
  3:39pm marc:

Was he calling for Buttercup from the H.M.S. Pinafore?
Avatar 3:39pm Cheri Pi:

Water cup, just Schweppes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Guido from Cologne:

"Angst Hase Pfeffer Nase" is a pun.
AngstHase is a scarety cat (in german it is a hare).
hasenPfeffer (hare-Pepper) is a Dinner en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Guido from Cologne:

Pfeffer Nase means pepper and nose .. you know about the effect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Greg from Bloomfield:

Thanks guys! Google can cram it...unless they have a freeform radio station that I don't know about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm common:

or that, cheri!
  3:45pm Mark Williams:

I wonder what WFMU sounded like in 1981-85. So many reissues are hitting that general spot. It's like it never happened the first time around.
  3:46pm Ike:

@KFHP, my job used to require me to keep an eye on a fifth-rate search engine. EVERY DAY it had eye-searingly awful bogus doodles, usually of pathetic celebs on their b-days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Stanley:

'Snot', 'Spittle', God knows what we're going to get next!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm coelacanth:

i have dozens of cassette tapes of wfmu from '81-'85. one day i'll start transferring them to cd and send them along.
  3:54pm Ike:

@Coel, any of Bronwyn's Truck Stop Tea Party? I'd plotz if I could hear that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Greg from Bloomfield:

NUH UH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm coelacanth:

Ike if any,not much. there's a female who played a punky set then spoke with her mouth full of "honey roasted peanuts"! it may've been Bronwyn. (it sounds like Diane but i think the tape goes back to before her time.)
Avatar 4:03pm glenn:

sweet chili pistachios. who knew?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm SeanG:

this rocks
Avatar 4:06pm Cheri Pi:

LOLOLOLOLOL!~~
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm coelacanth:

Great version!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm DCE:

when is this from??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm common:

nice!
Avatar 4:07pm Cheri Pi:

They shoulda kept to doing Who covers.
Avatar 4:07pm Lopez:

THIS IS AWESOME
  4:07pm Kurt:

Love this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm coelacanth:

This is rush?!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm chris:

Seeker is from their album of, if we had done what we wanted to do and played 60's covers in bars...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Polyus:

Hey Neil Peart is showing remarkable restraint here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm chris:

no lie, liner notes on Feedback are an interesting read
Avatar 4:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- a good faithful cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm coelacanth:

i agree with Cheri Pi!
...although i never TOTALLY wrote them off!
Avatar 4:09pm glenn:

they did play 60's covers in bars, trust me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Greg from Bloomfield:

Hoping to make this show...just gotta try not be hungover on Easter.
  4:10pm Mark Williams:

@coelacanth - that would be awesome. The station might want them!
Avatar 4:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...altho', of course - The Wh♂ did steal the whole idea of concept albums/RockOpera from Rush...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm coelacanth:

Mark, i should think so! it's going to take some time.
Avatar 4:13pm singing serpent glen:

here we go...who-binge-thread pt II!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm coelacanth:

a lesser comment board would form a mob.
Avatar 4:15pm glenn:

really? tommy came out in 1969, and rush didn't even put out a record until 1975, so i have my doubts.
Avatar 4:16pm Cecile:

hola!
Avatar 4:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yes glenn - like Kansas is ripping off Yes, maan !
Swag For Life Member 4:16pm Ralphine:

I do have to say that I was disappointed that Brian didn't play The Jax Are Back in either of his marathon shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm chris:

they also invented prog, glenn. its indisputable... they are time travellers...
Avatar 4:17pm Lopez:

This board is the top of the intellectual heap. We're more smarter than we look
Avatar 4:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I mean - like Yes is ripping off Kansas - cause that would be funny...nevermind...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm coelacanth:

Hi Cecile!
Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Ralphine:

I wear glasses, so I look plenty smart.
Avatar 4:19pm Cecile:

I can donate in advance next year, but I am banned from listening during fundraising next year because I am too suggestible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm coelacanth:

i still don't look smart with glasses.
Avatar 4:19pm Cecile:

So much for paying up front. :/ My bank and my partner are not happy with me.
Avatar 4:20pm Cecile:

So wow me. I want to hear every cent in the programming! hhahahha
Avatar 4:21pm Cecile:

According to Chuck Eddy, Tom Sawyer was one of the first rap songs. bahahahahaha
Avatar 4:22pm Lopez:

Just fell into a Rush rabbit hole from looking up those Feedback liner notes. Now I know the exact date when I saw them with Primus in '91
Avatar 4:23pm Cecile:

RUSH AND PRIMUS?!:?!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm coelacanth:

i think all that "toasting" out of JA was a precursor to rap.
...and "talking blues" folk songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm chris:

I think I saw that tour, too, Lopez. Was it one of the paloozas?
Avatar 4:24pm Cecile:

I think Chuck Eddy was trying to be kind of an instigating idiot.
Avatar 4:25pm Cecile:

that's worth my pledging the farm right there. Right on, Brian.
Avatar 4:26pm Lopez:

@Cecile- it was a natural fit. Two 3 piece bands lead by bass players. It was great as I was 17
Avatar 4:27pm Cheri Pi:

I would need to live out the rest of my life in a medically induced coma if I saw Rush with Primus.
Avatar 4:27pm Cheri Pi:

C$- we could be coma twins!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm coelacanth:

'sounds like that. he sounds like a rolling stone guy. (except they're idiots without trying, for the most part.)
Avatar 4:28pm Cecile:

oh, yeah, that would have been great for a 17 year old. All those chord progressions help build strong bodies 12 ways.

hahahhahahhahah, Pi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm coelacanth:

Woowee! Sunny!!
Avatar 4:29pm Lopez:

Chris- Roll the Bones Tour. I saw them at the illustrious Hartford Civic Center 12/13/1991. The website says Primus wasn't there for that gig but I was there primarily for them at the time so I remember it well. The person in front of me had an amazing Fly by Night airbrushed denim jacket!
Avatar 4:29pm Brian Turner:

I saw Rush at 35 at Radio City surrounded by 40-somethings and their 70 year old moms who drove them (no other women present)
Avatar 4:29pm Cecile:

coma twins! yay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Andrew Waterloo:

I have soundboard that was supposedly made for Les Claypool from that Roll the Bones Tour
Which is good because the album songs sound way better live.
Avatar 4:31pm Cecile:

hahahhahahahaha
Brian, the two easiest shows to get to the bathroom for me were Metallica at the Metrodome and Cecil Taylor on the U of M campus. There were 1/10 the amount of women in the audience. It was the opposite of most dance nights I've been to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Polyus:

Twice on the Grace Under Pressure tour for me. Steinbergers up!
Avatar 4:31pm Lopez:

awesome Sunny Murray / Sonny Sharrock
  4:32pm sltrx:

One Man One Mind?
Avatar 4:33pm Lopez:

Cecile that's hilarious. Too true BT they were not great for picking up chicks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm coelacanth:

never heard that Sunny/Sonny -Wild!
Avatar 4:36pm Cheri Pi:

I'll have my ambulance driver escort you next time BT, I'd probably just embarass you in front of Rush, lying there in an iron lung taking up two seats.
Avatar 4:38pm steve:

what was the "pancake tour" just mentioned ?
Avatar 4:38pm Cecile:

waaaah
now I wanna see feedtime.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Andrew Waterloo:

Cheri, Iron Lungs are fairly old tech, we should assume you're taking up three seats and a bit of the isle.
Avatar 4:40pm Cecile:

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

That sounds like a great interview.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm coelacanth:

i'm surprised Cecil Taylor didn't attract more women. i've heard a few females say they liked Matthew Shipp,which- though he's no Cecil, he's in the same realm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Polyus:

Magma tickets for Chicago are $107 on StubHub. Whoosh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Andrew Waterloo:

yikes. I'm seeing them in May
Avatar 4:44pm Cecile:

This is kind of a conservative town in terms of jass. I think most people showed up because they had season tickets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm coelacanth:

damn. He's a Legend! 'almost single-handedly started a revolution!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm Andrew Waterloo:

Matthew Shipp with Darius Jones was one of the best performances I've ever seen.
  4:46pm sltrx:

Man, saw Rush so many times at Riverfront & Hara, they toured all the time in the 70's. Rush/Kiss tour was killer, Rush/UFO, ditto
Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Ralphine:

I'll never forget the headline of Rolling Stone's review of Keith Jarrett's Sun Bear recordings: "Keith Jarrett's Ego Trip--TEN LPS!!!!" with a subhed that said "Shoot the piano player."
Avatar 4:48pm Cecile:

Steve Harley is my favorite bad vocalist.
Avatar 4:48pm glenn:

clicky star for cockney rebel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm coelacanth:

Andrew That must've been!
i blew my opportunity to hang with Shipp. it was at a mutual friend's funeral and the cards were stacked against me making it.
  4:49pm Claw!:

This is what Dylan would sound like if he was actually good.
Avatar 4:50pm Cheri Pi:

Amen Claw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Carmichael:

Psychomodo. Me and that album go back. Hi Brian and others.
Avatar 4:50pm glenn:

hmmmm. neil young is the best bad vocalist AND the best bad guitarist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm coelacanth:

Bear! -yeah!
Avatar 4:52pm Lopez:

I've got to head out and will miss the rest of the show unfortunately. It's been a gas folks, and keep up the good work BT
Avatar 4:54pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Hell, jeezus, whoa. Finally got the headphones working.
JUST.... DON'T MOVE, HUMAN HEAD...
Avatar 4:54pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Plus, dammit man this DDAA piece is wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm coelacanth:

caio Lopez
-agreed glenn; although i would say John Lee Hooker WAS the best not-technically-great guitarist, but a superb singer.
  4:55pm Claw!:

Glad y'all agree.
I always feel a strong urge to post a complaint about Dylan whenever he's played on here, but sometimes people can be so damn touchy about that! I don't wanna piss anyone off, but dammit - he pisses *me* off!
Avatar 4:56pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I always figured Dylan was a poor Tom Rapp wannabe. [shrugs feebly]
  4:56pm Mark Williams:

@Brian - guess it depends on who's compiling. I've got a box set of Chano Pozo ("El Tambor de Cuba"), and they give him the writing credit for "Nague" (he's playing on it). Valdes is definitely the singer.
Avatar 4:57pm glenn:

john lee, yep. i'd also put bo diddley in the same category.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm coelacanth:

this reminds me of a velvet underground song, but i cannot think which one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm coelacanth:

{"lady godiva's operation"}
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm common:

loved that last un!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm coelacanth:

i really like most Dylan from his beginning through "john wesley harding";then patchy through "desire";and "blood on the tracks" was excellent....then his suckiness was fairly thorough.
(in my so very humble opinion)
Avatar 5:05pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

th'Qualk!
Avatar 5:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- in the mid-60s, Dylan was as titanic as anyone would ever be - & influenced Rapp & Cohen & everybody else
- after the early 70s - he was just good. The Steve Harley was like Dylan produced as we wish he'd've been (altho' he's had a pretty good band of late)
...oh there's coelacanth w/ the same thing...
  5:07pm Mark Williams:

@Rev. Turnip Druid: the lead Qualkist (Simon Crab) has a new solo CD out, btw. Really quite good.
Avatar 5:09pm Brian Turner:

nice mark do you have any more info on that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm coelacanth:

RR! we click many of the same songs, too! (though you click more than me.)
  5:11pm Mark Williams:

@Brian - on the Crab release you mean? It's available via Fathom Distribution. I have an email for a guy who's distributing it if you want.
Avatar 5:11pm Brian Turner:

sure please - bt@wfmu.org thank you.
Avatar 5:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- I'm known as *thee* clicky☆slut - I just click everything I think is good - not to keep track (tho' they show if they come up again) so much as tho' they were fb Likes...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm coelacanth:

occasionally i think 'twould be nice to ★ comments too, but i think it'd start to get clicky.(!)
Avatar 5:16pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Mark W @5:07 -- excellent! Looking into that..
Avatar 5:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...or too cliquey...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Greg from Bloomfield:

YES!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm Carmichael:

Hey, I like this Gravel! Does all their music sounds like this?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm dale:

i liked that too - krauty and proggy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm coelacanth:

crap, i missed something krauty & proggy.
(i could back up but then i'd miss this)
tgia.(thank gods it's archived)
  5:37pm Claw!:

I like how this band don't need no stinkin vowels to name themselves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm coelacanth:

fuck those vowels anyway.
  5:42pm ?:

That guitar stuff is cool--now, are the monkeys actually playing the guitars? Because I'd pay a quarter to see that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm coelacanth:

Thanks Brian
ciao people
  5:52pm sltrx:

Neutral is very cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Carmichael:

I have Elliott Sharp on some cutout bin comp called Guiutar's Practicing Musicians, Volume 2 billion or something. It's pretty interestring.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Greg from Bloomfield:

Thanks, Brian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm chris:
