Options Brian Turner: Playlist from December 16, 2014 Options

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Great groove to kick off this fine Tuesday afternoon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm DCE:

on the Autobus. G'day BT.
Avatar 3:07pm Mugsy:

Good afternoon Brian Turner and greeting all on the board.
Avatar 3:07pm Cheri Pi:

Clicky jams
Avatar 3:08pm Cecile:

now this is what I call space jamz
Avatar 3:08pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

artisanal autobus!
Avatar 3:09pm Brian Turner:

afternoon everybody. thanks for joining in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Ike:

Ha ha, I loved Liz's closing anecdote. See, that's why I moved to the NON-hipster part of Brooklyn. No $8 jars of artisanal horseradish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm chris:

Greets, Brian, All.. batting 1000 on the clicky starred tracks today. ;-)
Avatar 3:11pm Cecile:

well, Ike, some people really don't like scraped knuckles from grating.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm DCE:

scraped knuckles is the best part! plus you get some skin in the food.
Avatar 3:12pm Lopez:

Ike: they're coming eventually!
Avatar 3:13pm Cecile:

I just buy mine from the Ukrainian store. It's like 3 bucks a bottle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm redkayak:

"Artisanal horseradish." A phrase I never thought I'd live to see :)
Avatar 3:14pm Cheri Pi:

I dreamt about horseradish chips last night, do they really exist?
Avatar 3:14pm Cecile:

Well, at least people are eating it again.

Pi, prolly in Canada!
Avatar 3:15pm βrian:

"Artisanal horse shit," on the other hand ...
Avatar 3:15pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

we've got a pub down here that started charging $1 for what it claims to be "artisanal ice," which constitutes quite the jump of an artisanal shark, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm redkayak:

ha! A must for the organic gardeners
Avatar 3:15pm Cecile:

Avatar 3:16pm Cecile:

I think we need to eat crappier food to keep our tolerance up.
Avatar 3:18pm Cheri Pi:

My dream chips were actually artisinally dried horseradish slices. probably baked.
Avatar 3:18pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

What Cecile said.
Make the body an unwelcome host for the nasties.
Strong coffee and constant rage seems to work for me.
Avatar 3:19pm Cecile:

Pi, I love you, but that sounds horrible. I don't think you can slice that thing.

What about dusting some other chips with horseradish powder?
Avatar 3:20pm βrian:

We got very, very home-on-the-prairie, as Trouble would say, and put up 110 quarts of tomatoes this year. We scoff at artisanal jars of tomatoes.
Avatar 3:21pm Cecile:

Hell, you can just throw raw tomatoes in the freezer.
Avatar 3:21pm βrian:

@Rev Druid: are folks adding it to their beer?
Avatar 3:22pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

@βrian: Had to go find it again, fearing I had imagined the whole thing. Sadly, I had not... www.washingtoncitypaper.com...
Avatar 3:23pm Cecile:

What about daikon chips? Except daikon tastes so nice and fresh and cold.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm Guido from Cologne:

sounds like early Kraftwerk
Avatar 3:23pm βrian:

Haven't had good luck with frozen tomatoes. They turn into frosty monsters, then crawl out of the freezer and chase the cat.
Avatar 3:23pm Cheri Pi:

I must experiment with thee horseradish tonight, by thunder!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...holycrow ! - Greatness!...I better get over to the Playlist & ☆ all of this - I'm way behind !
...&... - oh ☆.
Avatar 3:24pm Cecile:

HELL. Just take your city water. Let it sit overnight in the fridge. Then warm until it is just hot. Then pour into trays. The fridge sit lets the muni chemicals disperse, the heating makes the ice cubes clear. Thank you. That will be $1.
Avatar 3:24pm Cecile:

From each of you!
Avatar 3:26pm Cheri Pi:

ooo dried daikon is heavenly too.
Avatar 3:26pm Cecile:

Brian, I just throw em into spaghetti sauce and either strain or hand blend it after it's cooked.
Avatar 3:27pm Cecile:

is it, Pi? Well, that might be your answer.
Avatar 3:30pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Zikkurat for pope.
Avatar 3:31pm fred:

Please take a moment to curse the slavedrivers who make female workers work the dreadful Jeff Koons exhibition in Paris. It's as bad as you think, and they want to have women working the worst rooms. Disgusting is a nice word
Avatar 3:31pm Mugsy:

Now that was a jam.
Avatar 3:32pm Cecile:

I haven't heard that name in years. I thought he was broke and dishonored.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Guido from Cologne:

Link somewhere?
Avatar 3:41pm Lopez:

I had to leave for a moment but my heart is full after seeing the fabled Unholy Swill on the playlist! Viva La Noiseville!
Avatar 3:41pm fred:

I heard it's worth 5 million euros, don't known how much he's getting, but female staff are getting much abuse
Avatar 3:45pm Lopez:

Jeff Koons is a sham hands-down. There have been a few cool pieces over the years (balloon and hedge/flower animals, small ceramic sculptures, and the porn star wife paintings all come to mind) but most of it is seriously self-congratulatory pretentious dreck made by disciples. Whoever buys his stuff deserves to be a part of that charlatans charade
Avatar 3:49pm Cecile:

it was people like him who turned me off art in the 80s
Avatar 3:51pm βrian:

Avatar 3:55pm fred:

Anyone who's making money out of abusing staff isn't worth anything in my book. That's Koons's thing, from what I heard from people working for him on that exhibition in Paris. Enough said, he's dead to me
Avatar 3:55pm Cheri Pi:

I can't hate Koons because his work represents the natural conclusion of the art business, welcome to show biz kid.
Avatar 3:56pm Cecile:

Or "my life, my love and my lady are LSD" in the Sun City Girls' case.

This is one of the greatest punk albums ever. Agh. Gotta go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Carmichael:

Hi Bri and all. Listening with black onions on my spiral horns.
  3:58pm j-No:

Yea! My good buddy Ronnie Bond of Really Red! Finally getting their due, after only 30 years!
Avatar 4:03pm fred:

@Cheri: I hear you, but would you like to work his porn rooms to make him laugh? He wanted females there in Paris. For that reason. I'm more angry about his reason than his asking for it. I can't think of something offensive enough for that garbage
Avatar 4:05pm Cheri Pi:

No I wouldn't Fred! But we don't know their motives either, it looks horrible but there is more going on than meets the eye.

Today's commercial successful salon artists' memento will have the same fate as those of 19th century salon artists: treatment by historians as insignificant
Avatar 4:06pm PKNY:

I sure hope "King of Sex" is in our future.
  4:06pm Mark:

Finally, a version of "Sweet Home Alabama" I can stomach. (Although I've heard that Neil Young actually liked it and they became sort-of friends.)
  4:08pm Kathy:

You call this cup of shit coffee?!?!
Avatar 4:15pm fred:

@Cheri: Sincere apologies are in order, I had met a friend who had to work there today, so I was pretty worked up. Now that I've cooled down a little, I see I was irrationally hostile. I wasn't even there, so I was just dumb. I apologize to you and everyone I called out, I was wrong. I don't apologize to Koons though, I still think he's a disgrace to honorable assholes
Avatar 4:17pm Cheri Pi:

Not at all Fred! Don't second guess yourself, especially how you react to art. I'm not offended by what you said and I'm glad to know you are there with your strong opinion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I think Koons has something to say - but how long does it take to get Koons - or get that you aren't getting it (??) - 30 sec.s ?
Avatar 4:23pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

[makes mental note to file away the phrase "a disgrace to honorable assholes" ... it's a winner.]
Avatar 4:24pm fred:

@Cheri: How graceful of you, but the point is I didn't even go to that show. I'm reacting on hearsay, and even though I suspect it's more than Koons is worth, I'm guilty of whatever I'm calling out for. Now I have to see his show. That penalty looks dreadful
Avatar 4:24pm fabricaguy:

on mute, just watching the play list, because i'm at work. take my life please.

Avatar 5:03pm fred:

You woudn't have me, my grandfather was Tunisian, my grandmother Jewish, and my father a communist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm Polyus:

Dang, Brian, I probably haven't bought that many new records in the last 10 years, let alone one. Glad I have WFMU to hep me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm chris:

fred, you'll fit right in, plenty of communist Jews made this country great (especially in the last half of the 20th century). And we can't get enough of "Night in Tunisia" recordings :-)
Avatar 5:05pm Brian Turner:

Well, I haven't bought em all either. Stuff I've listened to tho.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm redkayak:

Well, I have been following WFMU for about 10 days - and my productivity has declined greatly. Bless you.
Avatar 5:15pm fred:

@chris: I have been told I have the perfect toxic NJ bloodline. My brother is Korean and my sister is Caribbean, is that too much or should I run for office?

Avatar 5:26pm Brian Turner:

thanks chris.
Avatar 5:28pm fred:

Both my brother and sister were adopted, that explain the skin thing. And also that I'm mostly color-blind, no blame or praise of mine, they're kin
Avatar 5:30pm Cecile:

I have friends who are more kin than my actual family.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm Carmichael:

Fred, you're already your own melting pot. No need to mess it up with American citizenship.
Avatar 5:31pm Cecile:

Fred, we'd love you here in the US, but not if you're not gonna be happy.

there's birth family, then there's chosen family, i like to say
Avatar 5:33pm Cecile:

Avatar 5:35pm fred:

@Carmichael: Messing it up is kinda the point by now. France is seriously getting hostile to it. They might kick out my brother and sister soon. Seriously, they're into pure blood religious stuff I can't even relate to
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm Guido from Cologne:

Avatar 5:56pm Lopez:

I love this Possible Musics album. Ran across it in some unlikely store and picked it up cheap. Great, haunting stuff
Avatar 5:58pm fred:

@Cecile: I'd love to move to Massachusetts, I fell in love with the trees and snow there the only time I went to the US. I like cold weather, so the only other choices for me would be Wisconsin or Minnesota, with the latter looking better because of 5th element. Not happening though, my eyes are blue, but my arab blood sometimes shows too much. And I just don't want to live with caucasians. I'm one, but I've never lived in that crowd, I really feel awkward in that ethnic stronghold.
