Hello there! Record lovers, here’s your chance to own a dream! “I have no idea what exact records are in the pile so please do not ask since they are free. I just want them gone.” newyork.craigslist.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm dale:

jake - one would probably be stopping at the nearest dumpster after picking up that pile. but there could be one or two that are good and not mistreated.
  5:08pm JakeGould:

The thing is that damp pile of potential gold is in Ossining. But this guy who does free metal cutting is in Brooklyn, “Don't call an expensive locksmith!” newyork.craigslist.org...
  5:09pm JakeGould:

And to the point, I do enjoy the instrumentals happening now. Very good autumnal afternoon sunset music, Gaylord.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm dale:

like the moondog track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Gaylord Fields:

@JakeGould: I'm doing my best to placate the Sun God so he'll return the sun tomorrow.
  5:15pm JakeGould:

@Gaylord: I hope this works. The amusement I derive from Craigslist free listings can only last so long.
Avatar 5:16pm kat330:

[♫ strains of La Marseillaise fading out]

Hey, Gaylord -- late (finishing Casablanca) but present now. If our weather the past couple of days moves to you as if often does, you'll see ☼ tomorrow.
  5:17pm original famous sugarwolf:

Maybe the sun god needs a sacrifice. I might be able to find some people to offer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Gaylord Fields:

@original famous sugarwolf: I trust your judgment. Sacrifice away!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Gaylord Fields:

@kat330: Are you a goddess, I ask rhetorically?
  5:20pm rw:

That stack of records could be good for somebody's art project.... cut the LP's up and glue/tape them back together, make ashtrays or clocks out of 'em, etc.. In my neighborhood you could put them by the curb with a "FREE" sign on them. Sorry about the damaged LPs. I'd be bummed.
  5:21pm JakeGould:

“In my neighborhood you could put them by the curb with a "FREE" sign on them.” Park Slope? I hate those “FREE” signs.
  5:22pm rw:

"FREE" signs are a little tacky I guess. Hope they go to a good home!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm dale:

'alden shuman' and 'allen sherman' are very close phonetically, if not musically
  5:24pm JakeGould:

I saw a pile of rags on a stoop in Park Slope once. Not in a bag. Just sitting on a step. And on them a note that read “FREE MATERNITY CLOTHES!” as if that was the most amazing gift ever given. A pile of dirty rags on the stoop… Just what a mother-to-be dreams of.
  5:24pm original famous sugarwolf:

Ugh my dinner break is over and I have to go back to work :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Gaylord Fields:

@dale: I'm a little busy, so I'll leave it to someone else to come up with Allan Sherman porno soundtrack parody titles.
  5:26pm P-90:

Evening G. "Skipper" Fields, and all present.
Great playlist right from the top, Skipper, as we sail into autumn (and the SOULLL-stice that draws ever nigh.
Avatar 5:27pm kat330:

@Gaylord: Rhetorically? [sorry, this "goddess" was busy in the kitchen]

@P-90: Haven't seen you in a bit. Extended b'day celebrating?
Avatar 5:28pm Philo Gristle:

Hello Gaylord & gang! Enjoying this Dustin & Takako tune. Missed the first 15 minutes as we were finishing with Humphrey Bogart and Co.
Avatar 5:30pm Sem Chumbo:

Hiya, Gaylord, and all. A fine start to this Sunday evening.
Avatar 5:30pm Philo Gristle:

Tunes today seem more in tune with our film of yesterday, a Joe Shishido classic from Nikkatsu studios in the 60s...
Avatar 5:31pm kat330:

Backing up a bit: Greta Does Camp Granada? [and, no, never seen a porno in all my many years, but unavoidable not to know titles.]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm Gaylord Fields:

@kat330: Yes, rhetorically, because the answer is evident.

@Philo Gristle: I'd miss me for that film, too!

It was probably my 10+ time of seeing. Philo claims only third.
  5:33pm P-90:

@Kat: I'm around a lot listening, not always posting. But wait... what if Alan Sherman HAD written a soundtrack for "The Devil in Miss Jones"?!
What then...?
Avatar 5:34pm Philo Gristle:

@Gaylord Been a couple of decades from the previous time. It was even more moving than I remembered. Somehow your sounds seem to hit the same (or similar) mood, so a perfect seque.
Avatar 5:34pm kat330:

A Olá saudável, Mr. Chumbo!
Avatar 5:35pm Sem Chumbo:

Recorded the soundtrack from a TV airing of Casablanca on a cassette recorder in pre-vcr days and listened to it incessantly. Can quote chapter and verse, in true old movie geek fashion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm dale:

if allen sherman and roger ebert collaborated....heard today that allen sherman died too young in his 40s, basically broke and in a hollywood hospital for actors and musicians. i didn't know, sad...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm Gaylord Fields:

@JakeGould: Perfect!
Avatar 5:39pm Philo Gristle:

@Sem Classic film geeks unite. Made me want to watch some Charles Boyer in Algiers or Jean Gabin in Pepe Le Moko or read some Paul Bowles. Sorry if I'm not 100% on the ball. Been drinking Philo's Gristle's.... I'm 50% on the high ball.

“My Son, The Insatiable Allan Sherman!”
Avatar 5:43pm kat330:

@Sem: Well so glad you feel hale and hearty! Me, too, although truly pissed about changes in the new FMU schedule. [gggggggggggrowl]
Avatar 5:44pm Sem Chumbo:

@Philo: Had the pleasure of reading Sheltering Sky in a week-long retreat in the Rif Mountains, and of course, being half continental French, all things Charles Boyer are, by simple genetics, above reproach.
Avatar 5:44pm kat330:

@Gaylord: Will we have a sled team of Moondogs before show end?
Avatar 5:45pm kat330:

Ukulele?? Arrrrrgggghhhh [hands over ears momentarily as I move into the kitchen]
Avatar 5:46pm Sem Chumbo:

@kat: I have heard the rumblings of others around the schedule, as well. I do not envy the Station Manager, but as X-Ray pointed out today, look how the station continues to evolve, as do, I think, our tastes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Gaylord Fields:

@kat330: If that's what it takes to get the sun back, so be it.
  5:48pm P-90:

2 things I look forward to hearing more of during the new WFMU schedule: ukelele and cowbell.
Avatar 5:51pm Philo Gristle:

@Sem Envious! Kat's been to Morocoo, but the closest I'm managed were the Canary islands. Which REALLY doesn't count. But then again, are these wonderful locations still the wonderful locations we imagine? Were they ever? Perhaps...
Avatar 5:53pm Philo Gristle:

The Finn in me grooves on this melancholy mood...
Avatar 5:53pm kat330:

@Sem: If evolving tastes include screwing the female DJs, then I'm all for DEVO. [an angry "goddess" is not a pretty sight]

@Gaylord: Usually our weather hits you folks a day or so later -- not always, but usually. So digits crossed you will awake to a lovely sky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Gaylord Fields:

@Philo Gristle: Then who need the sun?
Avatar 5:59pm kat330:

@P-90: I even learned the 3-chord "monte" on my stepfather's bass uke before I got my guitar, but I am tapped out on the sound now in pop culture. Esp. in the hands of "cute, quirky girls." Ugggh. But don't get me started on "breathy, little girl voiced vocalists" -- I'd take ukes over that sound.
Avatar 6:03pm Sem Chumbo:

@Gaylord: perhaps that last song could be the signature sign-off song for FMU, if it ever signed off the air.
"God save you this holy house"
Avatar 6:03pm Philo Gristle:

@Gaylord I was going to flippantly say not the Finns, but being one of the suicide capitals of the world, I think we all need it. When it disappears for months in the heart of winter, the image and desire for it still sustains most if not all....
Avatar 6:04pm Rick Heinegeber:

This is a great break from all that pop music I usually trawl through everyday. Great show.
Avatar 6:06pm Philo Gristle:

Re: schedule -- It was a bit of a shock to see a lot of the female DJs disappear....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Gaylord Fields:

@Rick Heinegeber: Be forewarned that this show can change direction on a dime, but thanks!
Avatar 6:08pm Sem Chumbo:

I count the days to the shortest one of the year, and then count them to the longest. So, I guess I am a sun-o-phile in that respect.
Avatar 6:08pm Rick Heinegeber:

That's what I love about FMU - You never know what you're gonna get.
Avatar 6:10pm kat330:

@Rick: But when you've given money to a show specifically toward its survival, it goes beyond shock. Fully half the shows we donated to are either gone or moved to a non-listenable time slot. Gaylord, you are one to remain in place, thank the true goddesses.
Avatar 6:13pm kat330:

I guess it feels quite a bit like bait and switch for us. But fool us once... u.s.w.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Aitch:

Always nice to hear a bit of Ween. Cheers from Sydney, good show.
  6:16pm JakeGould:

If I gave to a show that is now off the schedule, I feel it is a vote that will be weighed later on when the DJ is reconsidered.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Aitch:

Bit of Moistboyz perhaps?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Gaylord Fields:

I really, really don't want to get in a big discussion about it, but if DJs have said or implied that their individual survival (and not the station's) counts on you pledging to their shows, that's just not so.
Avatar 6:18pm kat330:

@Jake: Perhaps, but I should add this is already at the "fool me twice, shame on fmU" level. I know I won't be tuning in as much for many months, and likely active on boards even less.
Avatar 6:20pm kat330:

@Gaylord: No, no, never suggested. But we have very little to spread around as it is, so obviously we'd prefer what we give to go to what we enjoy hearing. It's always those we don't so much that stay on in place, year after year, and that has to make us think twice, thrice and beyond.
Avatar 6:21pm Sem Chumbo:

Our loss, kat. See you when I see you.
Thanks, Gaylord. I'm out.
  6:21pm JakeGould:

Kat, you are overreacting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Gaylord Fields:

@kat330: Let's talk offlist. You know how to reach me.
Avatar 6:22pm kat330:

IAE, I'm done with the subject. Just might be the last opportunity.

@Sem: Bye! Please don't leave if it's the discussion?
Avatar 6:22pm Rick Heinegeber:

I'm kinda scared to check out the new schedule now Kat. I'm sure most of those DJ's decided to take a break (and will be back) or move on to other things for a while.
Avatar 6:23pm kat330:

@Rick: I'm sure it's fine for 98% of male listeners, so not to worry.

@Gaylord: Certainly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Gaylord Fields:

@kat330: I will say this for public consumption: You don't entirely know why those DJs left the air. But please contact me offlist.
  6:26pm JakeGould:

The only issue I have with this schedule is how rock oriented and dude oriented the Saturday schedule is compared to before. But that is all.
  6:26pm rw:

Rick, I haven't perused the schedule, but it doesn't seem to have shifted more than you'd expect something like this to shift. As Kat330 just inferred it's a little more male oriented this season than it probably should be, but I'm sure that will shift back too.
Avatar 6:29pm kat330:

@Jake: Well, there can even be female DJs who are more "dude oriented" in their playlists, and those are the only ones who seemed to remain within the same timeframe as before (except for Trouble, whose taste I greatly applaud -- just not some frequent commenters she gets).
Avatar 6:30pm kat330:

All right NOW, subject ended on this end -- sorry, Gaylord! I've never been good with a muzzle, much like Moondog. ;)
Avatar 6:36pm Philo Gristle:

Lovely sounds from the get-go. Not that I expected anything else, but since we started listening I think it's a question which songs I do NOT star, and only because I feel weird starring every damn song, than not liking one or few of them....
Avatar 6:37pm kat330:

Gaylord, Some lovely artists you're playing <-- Philo, I was JUST typing that when yours came up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm dale:

love richard barone - nice choice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Gaylord Fields:

@Philo Gristle @kat330: You're both aces!
  6:40pm JakeGould:

I’m going back to “FREE” stuff on Craigslist. TWO (!!!) FREE Cinderblocks! “Come and take as you like, 1 or 2. You make the pick!” newyork.craigslist.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

This Sched. Change happens to be pretty big - lotsa programs going, a slot shift or two I wouldn't choose...
- & it's one thing if a DJ wants a break, but one gets the impression that's not the case for a few DJs this time. I suppose it can't always be. Programs mean a lot to us, you know. I feel it too, as I'm sure a few do. That's all I know ! I wouldn't want Ken's job - as I - to borrow a phrase from Mitch Mitchell - couldn't organize a piss-up in a brewery myself...

- Nice to hear original Everly's that TheWh♂ covered (...I'm always on about that!)
- & long loved that Bongos, but wouldn't have known the Title...
  6:41pm emile:

Greatly digging this show
Avatar 6:42pm kat330:

Po! is sort of a Aimee Mann in a bit higher range.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...glad Sunday hasn't changed - @ all ??
- but remember losing Monica was like the Weimar Republic ending - & so it goes....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm fleep:

Supporting FMU is not about this or that show. There is no other radio station like this. I'm looking forward to the new programs, because they are unfamiliar. And the gender of who does the back announce is immaterial. That's just one dolphin's opinion.
Avatar 6:48pm Philo Gristle:

Weimar, or Berlin Wall, given the day. I'm not sure what I'm implying here, but I AM implying something.
  6:50pm rw:

I like Jeff Conklin's show. Samantha too... but I don't think she's on the schedule. Hopefully she'll be doing fill ins.

Weirdly, this McCoy Tyner makes me think of Magma and Mr. Vander. Love 'em both.
Swag For Life Member 6:56pm 12539:

Thank you, Mr Fields!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Gaylord Fields:

@12539: It's great to hear from you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- well - what I meant was Monica's show had a Weimar-esque quality of classy welcoming decadence; point being (that time anyhow) every FMU-J brings the Unique - & it's always hard to lose it.
...Yes: a couple new programs (to me anyhow) - & ain't heard can't judge. Will only be my opinion anyhow. A few beloved ones returning
...Gendre & Genre Diversity suffering might be a legit critique
...then again, the Diversity of this Set alone leaves me gobsmacked !...Not what I think of for McCoy, no - but it's him awlright !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm dale:

well said, fleep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Irwin:

Love this Tyner piece. Gerry Gibbs and the Third Trio from the Sun do a great cover. (Pamelia Kurstin plays bass in the trio.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Gaylord Fields:

@Philo Gristle: Too bad this is my last song, because you just gave me good segue ideas. I'll just wait six months and pretend it was my idea all along.
Avatar 6:57pm kat330:

@fleep: All I can say is you haven't walked in this Kat's moccasins to know all encountered in our relatively brief time supporting the station. And there really are some very fine sounds to be found elsewhere on Internet radio. I'm sure much harder for those listening on NYC radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Irwin:

Gaylord, more jazz please, less Franco-pop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Gaylord Fields:

@Irwin: Thanks. It's a perfect show ender.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Gaylord Fields:

@Irwin: How about both simultaneously?
  6:59pm JakeGould:

kat330, you’ve made your point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm Irwin:

Mash 'em up however it pleases you.
