Live Performance by Rachel Ries
As the daughter of missionaries, Rachel Ries spent her early musical life immersed in Mennonite hymns, Suzuki violin and The Carpenters. Ries melded those influences into a considerable talent, with a freewheeling, often breezy storytelling style to her songwriting. Rachel is a frequent collaborator with Anaïs Mitchell, and released her lovely third album, "Ghost of a Gardener," earlier this year. Rachel Ries played live for Irene in advance of a show at the Cornelia Street Cafe.

This is in honor of Van, I imagine.

Hi Irene, hi Kat, hello one and all, Kate, wonderful start

The crowd went BONKERS when she launched into this song :)

Good afternoon

Hey Van, how was the trip[?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Irene Trudel:

Hi everybody! Glad to have you here today. @Van, I couldn't resist.
Avatar 12:03pm Van in DC:

Man oh man oh man was it utter awesomeness
Avatar 12:03pm Van in DC:

Thanks Irene! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Mary Wing played some Kate Bush the other night. Covers of Wuthering Heights.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Irene, Curtis is nodding in agreement with the first choice of music!
Avatar 12:03pm kat330:

@Van: I can imagine why. This song (and a few other inspirational ones) got me through some really down times.
Avatar 12:05pm Van in DC:

Peoples: GO SEE KATE if you at all can. What an epic show she puts on!
Avatar 12:05pm Van in DC:

Sean - how was your trip?
Avatar 12:06pm Van in DC:

If nothing else, it is my understanding that the shows by KaTe tomorrow and Wednesday will be recorded for a DVD release
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Kat, I caught up with a plethora of Baseball Tonight recordings when I got home yesterday, hit the sack at eight last night and slept for 14 hours solid!
Avatar 12:08pm Van in DC:

Also, if you go - a tip: I went to the Eventim Apollo the night before my own show (last Tuesday) and they let me in to buy merchandise while KaTe was performing. Had the place all to myself to shop and I GOT TO HEAR LIVE 9TH WAVE through the doors for free :) What an incredible bonus that was
Avatar 12:08pm kat330:

@Sean: Sounds about right! Again, thank you so much for the phone call. Like I said, now I have an audio recall to go along with the pixels you produce here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Irene Trudel:

@Sean, glad you two are here! Peter & I enjoyed your visit. www.facebook.com...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Van, The Mets went 6-3 whilst I was Stateside, that seems to spookily happen when i am your side of "The Pond"! Fenway was close to a religious experience, my first NFL game was scary, memo to myself, don't where a Giants top and cap to a Giants road game!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Irene, your cats are just gorgeous and fab.
Avatar 12:14pm Van in DC:

Yeah NFL games for the "away" team fans can be daunting. That's why I love to go to FedEx Field in my Dallas Cowboys gear when we play Washington :)

Close to a religious experience - that's exactly my thoughts on going to see KaTe
Avatar 12:14pm kat330:

@Irene: I'm getting a "content currently unavailable" notice. Is it because I don't have a FB account? But that doesn't seem reasonable that would be known just by surfing there.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Van, one of the huge amounts of posts on the Kate Facebook groups said not to open the programme until the end of the show.
  12:15pm don d:

Cynthia made some beautiful music didn't she? Too soon gone.
Avatar 12:17pm Van in DC:

It's a pretty awesome programme :)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Kat, I think that is the reason, if you don't have a Facebook account then you might not be able to view photos and posts.
Avatar 12:18pm kat330:

But it can't know I don't have an account just by following the link Irene provided, right?
Avatar 12:21pm Van in DC:

What a fantastic set this is
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Mike East:

facebook knows everything, kat330 - that's why we stay away
  12:22pm the Canterbury wood-elf:

Kate fans who haven't yet might want to check out her nephew Raven's psychedelic band Syd Arthur (kind of Pentangle meets Stereolab meets Radiohead in W. Africa - great stuff...)
Avatar 12:22pm kat330:

OK, Philo just called me from work and explained he couldn't see it either until he logged into his FB account -- mystery finis.
  12:23pm don d:

Melaena is someone that the whole world should know about-thanks for playing her music--
Avatar 12:23pm kat330:

@Mike: Ha!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Irene, what a truly splendid set this is.
Avatar 12:25pm Van in DC:

@ the Canterbury wood-elf - thanks, I'll have to do that!
Avatar 12:26pm kat330:

OK, Philo sent me the photo: Curtis Granderson bobble head. :)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Canterbury, thanks for the heads up.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Kat, one of my prized additions that safely made the 3000 mile odd journey back to Bristol
Avatar 12:29pm kat330:

Excellent! So glad both you and Van had safe journeys back and forth across The Pond, with no airport hassles.
  12:29pm the Canterbury wood-elf:

@Sean, they're playing The Louisiana in Briz with Rae tomorrow, although it may have sold out (they're starting to get national airplay, two pages in Saturday's Independent magazine, etc.). Get a ticket if you possibly can.
Avatar 12:29pm Van in DC:

Thanks Kat!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Canterbury, awesome, will check out tickets,
Avatar 12:34pm Van in DC:

Enthralled is an understatement :)

I was literally in tears for almost three hours
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Van, I will be taking a hanky as I will be close to blubbing throughout!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Thanks Irene, bless you
Avatar 12:36pm Van in DC:

Smart :)
  12:36pm KP:

I'm going to guess, on basis of nothing, she will take the show over here. Apparently it's quite complex
  12:37pm KP:

And hi, Irene.
Avatar 12:41pm Van in DC:

Sean, maybe they will have the "rescue kit" back in stock by the time you get to the show. It sold out really fast during the first few shows and they never got any more :( I really wanted one.
Avatar 12:41pm kat330:

At times I wish I had ears that didn't mind poor instrument or vocal intonation. It can be frustrating hoping to appreciate sounds other people have no problem with. I have no problem with dissonance in well-tuned instruments or voices, but slightly off-pitch is the worst for me.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Van, I haven't had a chance to see the merchandise gear, what was the "rescue kit" about?
Avatar 12:46pm Van in DC:

See this:

Avatar 12:48pm kat330:

Thank goodness Kate never hits an off note!
Avatar 12:49pm Van in DC:

Kat, as many many reviews have also "noted" (ha ha), KaTe is being note perfect during her performances.
Avatar 12:51pm Van in DC:

Oh, another tip Sean: If you aren't in the bottom part of the theater, you likely will not get showed with the confetti. I was upstairs on the left. After the show, I went down by the stage and picked up a TON of the confetti's :)
Avatar 12:52pm Van in DC:

showered I meant
Avatar 12:52pm kat330:

@Van: And that's so much harder on stage even with better headsets to hear what's going on.
Avatar 12:53pm Van in DC:

Struck me as odd Kat: Seeing KaTe using a hand held mic for some songs. She actually did that
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Van, I am in Row K in the stalls, by my guess nine rows from the front?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:55pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Hello to all Trudelites. Irene, thanks for helping make Saturday's Barbes remote such a great show...Now if only Kate Bush could've dropped in!
Avatar 12:55pm Van in DC:

Probably so I really don't know the theater that well. But yeah sounds like you have a pretty good seat.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Webhamster Henry:

If you like the sound of Cate LeBon , you might like to check out Liana Gabel (who opened for my band a few months ago). www.lianagabel.com
Avatar 12:55pm kat330:

I heard Tiny Ruins on Davison's program ("Running Through The Night"), and perfect pitch is among the Ruins.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Sean in Bristol UK:

thinking about taking a poster that reads "Kate, you have to tune into WFMU every Monday at five to listen to the most awesome dj on the planet, you will love what Irene plays, maybe you could do a live slot on her show sometime?" This poster could be a little on the large size, any ideas, fellow Trudelites on how I can get the message out to Kate?
Avatar 12:59pm Van in DC:

By the way, it's a large cast that KaTe has. Including her, I counted 20 total musicians / singers
Avatar 1:00pm Van in DC:

Give it to the short black security chief lady in black jacket. She was taking items personally to KaTe and I was so jealous of her :)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Irene, would it be ok to do a simple flyer, I have a feeling Kate would really dig what you are playing. I could put something together, let you see it via e-mail and then with your blessing take it to Hammersmith. I have to spread the gospel!
Avatar 1:05pm Van in DC:

I was going to wear an FMU shirt to the concert but instead wore a Before The Dawn one that I bought the night before. If you can do that Sean, wow! Think if she ever actually popped in and said "hi".....
Avatar 1:15pm kat330:

Got to step away for a bit, but will return as soon as I am able (and catch whatever I've missed in archive.)
Avatar 1:19pm Van in DC:

That sounds great!
Avatar 🥁 1:20pm βrian:

In our town, it's now officially sanctioned to harvest fruit from trees on City property.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Van, I forgot to ask, how was the jet lag coming over here? I find it easier heading west.
Avatar 1:45pm Van in DC:

@Sean - I was pretty tired. Checked into hotel early and slept for about three hours nap and I was much better
Avatar 1:46pm Van in DC:

That organ - wow! Brings back childhood memories as an Aunt of mine had one pretty much like that if not exactly. Totally forgot about that
  1:49pm don d:

Mimi Goese anyone?
Avatar 1:51pm Van in DC:

All those buttons & keys ...mind boggling
Avatar 1:52pm Van in DC:

Joel Forrester was chums with Thelonious Monk, not long before Monk's passing...
Avatar 2:23pm drewo:

Always nice to hear Joel Forrester on FMU. My wife met him while waiting on a bank line in lower Manhattan some years ago and had a nice chat.
Avatar 2:26pm Van in DC:

One of those classic Genesis albums for sure
  2:29pm Trenchcoat Wearer:

This is a favorite Genesis album for sure, but it peaks too early with the Broadway Melody of '74 halfway through the first side. Peter in front, Hackett on guitar, Phil in back on drums -- just like it should be!

Thanks for ignoring the anti-Prog broadcast rule!
  2:29pm ccrides:

There is lambswool under my naked feet.
The wool is soft and warm,
-gives off some kind of heat.
A salamander scurries into flame to be destroyed.
Imaginary creatures are trapped in birth on celluloid.
The fleas cling to the golden fleece,
Hoping they'll find peace.
Each thought and gesture are caught in celluloid.
There's no hiding in my memory.
There's no room to void.

The crawlers cover the floor in the red ochre corridor.
For my second sight of people, they've more lifeblood than before.
They're moving. They're moving in time to a heavy wooden door,
Where the needle's eye is winking, closing in on the poor.
The carpet crawlers heed their callers:
"We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in to get out."

There's only one direction in the faces that I see;
It's upward to the ceiling, where the chambers said to be.
Like the forest fight for sunlight, that takes root in every tree.
They are pulled up by the magnet, believing that they're free.
The carpet crawlers heed their callers:
"We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in to get out."

Mild mannered supermen are held in kryptonite,
And the wise and foolish virgins giggle with their bodies glowing bright.
Through a door a harvest feast is lit by candlelight;
It's the bottom of a staircase that spirals out of sight.
The carpet crawlers heed their callers:
"We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in to get out."

The porcelain mannikin with shattered skin fears attack.
The eager pack lift up their pitchers- the carry all they lack.
The liquid has congealed, which has seeped out through the crack,
And the tickler takes his stickleback.
The carpet crawlers heed their callers:
"We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in to get out."

While punk was an interesting response to the excesses of progressive rock, Genesis surely had some killer albums and tunes before turning to mush when Gabriel left. I turned on to them '74/75, end of high school, w/Selling England by the Pound.
  2:34pm the Canterbury wood-elf:

I don't expect Fripp & Co. will be playing this on the current tour...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Tome:

Thanks for those Carpet Crawlers lyrics, @ccrides! I also recently heard a really nice revision of it done by Peter Gabriel but don't own it. Have to download it!

Wish I were going to King Crimson but I didn't move fast enough for tix. I also thought I had to work, so I'll regrettably have to pass.

  2:36pm don d:

'Selling...' would have been late '73, I think; saw Genesis do Lamb at Montreal Forum December, 1974 and remains one of the most powerful performances I've ever seen. Ian McDonald's melody on 'I Talk..' is timeless..
