Options Brian Turner: Playlist from July 10, 2012 Options

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Greets BT! Awright! Back at alternate McCarren Pool!
  3:06pm Matt from Springfield:

Neue Musik von Herr Schickert! Ausgezeichnet!

Guten Tag Brian und alle!
Avatar 3:07pm BT:

Pool is closed today: nymag.com...
  3:08pm BDR:

I like your surf music better than Todd's. Thanks!
  3:11pm Stewart:

Fecal incident!
  3:12pm Matt from Springfield:

@BT: Unless a pool is closeby, it usually pays to call ahead of time to make sure it's open; any little incident can close a pool down for an hour, or the whole day. Not to mention the sound of thunder closing outdoor pools...
  3:12pm Matt from Springfield:

Fecal Pool Incident, opening for Toilet Fork Jul 11.
  3:14pm BSI:

Fecal who need fecal are the luckiest fecal in the world.
  3:14pm Honey Water:

Now, Stewart, I don't want to see what you can do.
  3:15pm JDELZ:

Afternoon, all... RIP Dennis Flemion of The Frogs.
  3:16pm Matt from Springfield:

Groupe El Azhar rocks! Like Tejano-rock mix on acid!
  3:17pm Matt from Springfield:

Hi Honey Water. Really liking that name now? :)
  3:17pm dc pat:

did I really miss John Lurie on trouble's show this morn?? How'd I forget that one?...
  3:19pm Honey Water:

At least it helps when people comment "Gee, you are on every playlist!" Then I steer them to the output of Danne and Matt. :)
  3:19pm Honey Water:

You most definitely did, pat.

when the hell is Toilet Fork coming to dc??
  3:22pm Honey Water:

Hope you DC dudes got the cool Canada AC that we did.
  3:23pm dc pat:

I'm about 6 1/2 hours late Cheri...
  3:24pm Matt from Springfield:

@dc pat: According to TF's Twitter, there's apparently a utensil stuck down the restroom of their tour bus, and they can't go on tour until that's fixed.
  3:24pm Chris from DC:

Yes, HW, we can breathe again.
  3:25pm dc pat:

ac/dc, doot dadoot, dadooo...
  3:26pm Braveness23:

Weird, I was just reading an article about solar flares and I clicked over to WFMU playlist to see what I was listening to and enjoying so much... Sunflare!
  3:26pm Honey Water:

@Braveness: Yeah, me, too. I thought it was at APOD, but I can't find the reference. A big one last week, yes?
  3:27pm Hugh:

Half the content of the pool must be chlorine to 114 parts daily incidents/accidents. Yes, nothing against Todd but I like surfing to this stuff a lot more.
  3:28pm Braveness23:

Actually I was reading a CNN article talking about the most likely things to take down the internet. Kinda fluffy but: http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/10/tech/web/internet-down-eagleman/index.html?hpt=hp_c1
  3:28pm Honey Water:

Speaking of batshit and fecal incidents, fxo played a Patton Oswalt clip yesterday morning on the theme. HIlarious.
  3:29pm Cheri Pi:

Sorry folks, the internet is down due to a diaper accident.
  3:29pm Honey Water:

Thanks, B23!
  3:31pm Cheri Pi:

Sunflare = highschool band challenge https://www.facebook.com/TreeOfDeath
  3:33pm still b/p:

CNN /summer moment:
On Cape Cod for a few recent days, saw a CNN truck at a scenic Chatham spot, and then watched the reporter do a live tease and a live portion of his piece, talking about how the "apex predator...has returned to these waters"....shaaaarks!
  3:33pm Matt from Springfield:

Sunflare = surf music "on fire"!
  3:35pm Honey Water:

s b/p: Ah, Old Cape Cod -- fond memories....
  3:37pm northguineahills:

I went to the store, Sunflare was playing, came back from the store, Sunflare is still playing, awesome!
  3:37pm Honey Water:

Here, pooch. Good doggy...
  3:38pm Braveness23:

@northguineahills Whatcha get at the store?
  3:38pm Honey Water:

  3:39pm Cheri Pi:

  3:40pm dc pat:

what did Bill Murray say when he picked up the Baby Ruth? Was it "It's not so bad..."
  3:41pm northguineahills:

Beer, I have some work to get done, and I've given up coffee. (1/hour keeps things loose). Just downed two cups of yerba mate.
  3:43pm Cheri Pi:

I got pretty loose last night at the Paperhead show.
  3:44pm Honey Water:

A bit of Marc Bolan in the vocal.
  3:45pm Matt from Springfield:

No Ryan M. and cassettes? Well, as long as he's all right, and coming back soon.
  3:45pm northguineahills:

Don't forget Lol Coxhill died yesterday

I saw the Frogs open for the Smashing Pumpkins a lifetime ago.
  3:46pm Matt from Springfield:

@dc pat: Maybe a shrug, like a "Hmm" and then "It's not so bad" or something just like it.
  3:46pm Cheri Pi:

Ah, I saw the Frogs a couple of times in the 90's; they are/were so great
Avatar 3:46pm BT:

Ryan postponed til later this month....
  3:46pm Wake:

Any lol coxhill tributes aired?
  3:47pm Braveness23:

Kate and I had friends over last night to jam so I was pretty, ehem, bloodshot this AM.
  3:47pm BSI:

Wasn't too familiar with Frogs but that Whisper tune was a bolt of ice clear weird. Big diggin'. Do carry on.
  3:48pm Honey Water:

Earthbound misfit no longer.
  3:49pm JDELZ:

Heavy choice on I'm A Ghost. Haven't been so affected by a musician's death in some time.
  3:51pm JDELZ:

Is this live set available in its entirety anywhere? I'd love to hear the whole thing!

  3:55pm Honey Water:

Thanks for the link, Scott.
  3:55pm JDELZ:

Thanks Scott!
  3:55pm Tom G:

In college this annoying right wing dude used to stop by my dorm room frequently. I finally killed the visits once and for all by playing the Frogs during one of his stop bys.
  4:00pm JDELZ:

They have 2 brand new fuil lengths available on iTunes. Just released last week.
  4:02pm still b/p:

Drummer for an annoying right wing dude came downeast to live free and be a wild wheelman over the weekend:
  4:03pm Honey Water:

@NGH: I'm sure liking this better than Smashing Pumpkins. Just read a bit about The Last Hard Men, an alternative music supergroup.
  4:05pm Honey Water:

As Honey "Mae" West always says, a hard man is good to find.
  4:05pm Cecile:

hi, all.
  4:06pm Cheri Pi:

Howdy Cecile-thanks for the message earlier.
  4:07pm Cecile:

you are welcome.
  4:07pm JDELZ:

Fun fact: This EP "Starjob" was produced by Billy Corgan under the alias Johnny Goat.
  4:07pm wikial pursuit:

Honey West is an American crime drama television series that aired on ABC during the 1965-1966 television season. The series stars Anne Francis as female private detective Honey West and John Ericson as her partner Sam Bolt.
Only 30 episodes were produced. The entire first season is available on DVD.
  4:08pm Honey Water:

Bruce was her ocelot.
  4:09pm Matt from Springfield:

More professionals should have a signature ocelot as a pet.
  4:10pm Matt from Springfield:

And hey Cecile!
  4:10pm witwikial pursuit:

(In "The Fun-Fun Killer," which originally aired on March 4, 1966, the African series Daktari is showing on Honey's TV, and Honey asks, "Oh Bruce, why do we always have to watch your show?")
  4:11pm fred:

I hadn't heard about Lol Coxhill. Last time I saw him was last year, with Doneda, and it was a good one. Great musician.
  4:12pm Honey Water:

Such a wry sense of humor these Flemion bros. have. I'm sure spinning "I'm a Ghost" would be fully appreciated.
  4:12pm Matt from Springfield:

Ha ha! Leaving you "Smut Mines"! A prank for nerds to do on each others computers!
  4:14pm Honey Water:

As Philo typed, I count myself among the FMU listenerds.
  4:15pm Matt from Springfield:

And another HA HA! Casual Acid Tea! (I was thinking casual acid-tee, something you would wear)
  4:16pm Matt from Springfield:

Proud Listenerd at WFMU!
Not a Lizardner yet, however...
  4:17pm Honey Water:

Kinda sad that a museum of kind men would be secret.
  4:19pm seang:

There is only one nerd and his name is Toby Radloff
  4:22pm dc pat:

gads, I'm falling to sleep...gotta get outta here..
  4:22pm Matt from Springfield:

Meredith Monk! Warm up your vocal chords, everyone!
  4:25pm Honey Water:

Yes, now that we can breathe deeply again, thanks to Canada.
  4:27pm Mike East:

you get here late, then you leave early? You're fired, dc pat.
  4:29pm Matt from Springfield:

Canada and the Equator, always giving and taking and leaving us in the middle of it all.
  4:32pm Matt from Springfield:

Shocking Blue! It's been a while since I"ve heard this original version, at first I thought you were about to play Bananarama at a slower speed.
  4:32pm Honey Water:

Wow, shocking that outta the blue we're getting the straight out version of this, no remixing or weirdness attached. :)
  4:32pm BSI:

...speaking of which (@mike east), I'll be complaining of meetings keeping me from FMU no longer! Silver lining, anyone?
  4:33pm Honey Water:

Aw, sorry, BSI. :(
  4:34pm Honey Water:

NOW, I see BT's genius at putting these two together!
  4:35pm Mike East:

shitty, bsi. good luck.
  4:35pm Matt from Springfield:

Sorry to hear BSI.
  4:35pm B-Z:

This record is great. Neil!
  4:36pm Honey Water:

Bet a really good mashup could be done between Venus and Young's Oh Susanna.
  4:38pm Matt from Springfield:

Thanks for noticing and pointing out the similar melody of this new Neil to "Venus", BT!
  4:38pm Mr. Personage:

Someone should do a show of songs that sound like they could be plagiarizing other people's songs.
  4:38pm Matt from Springfield:

Interesting arrangement of an old American song, no doubt.
  4:39pm Pat in Philadelphia:

XYX! Did they finally put out a full length LP?
  4:39pm Mr. Personage:

Unless you've already done it of course.
  4:40pm Mike East:

Funny, I was just talking about how I wrote a song last weekend that rips off a song that I wrote 6 years ago...which I'm sure I ripped off of something else.
  4:40pm Honey Water:

@Matt: By changing the old standard from major to minor key, it bears great resemblance to Venus, but I doubt Young was conscious of that. Or maybe he was. [shrug]
  4:40pm fred:

The label names are appropriate too: Venus on Repertoire, Oh Susanna on Reprise
  4:40pm Cheri Pi:

BSI's breathing dog video could be on that show Mr.P
  4:42pm Uncle Reuse:

Rippidy doo dah, rippidy-ay...
My, oh, my, it's a borrowin' day!
Avatar 4:42pm BT:

Yep new XYX LP
  4:43pm Cecile:

BSI, oh no! Wha'ppen?
  4:44pm Honey Water:

Lurie spoke of "borrowing" in trouble's interview with him earlier today.
  4:44pm BSI:

ha, Cheri, youtube message says the copyright claim has been "reviewed" and all charges dropped. Evidently a dog panting in slo-mo doesn't much resemble bad house music.
  4:45pm Pat in Philadelphia:

Consider that XYX LP pre ordered!
  4:46pm Cheri Pi:

Where's the fun in that BSI? You're not living if you're not being investigated.
  4:46pm BSI:

@Cecile: adventures in downsizing. I'm way overdue for a design portfolio overhaul anyway. Haven't really been hunting since 2002. Feels like a widow re-entering the dating scene... weird!
  4:49pm Cecile:

Yeah, that's a great way of putting in. Oy. Well, have the best of luck!
I start Intro to Typography at the end of August myself.
  4:49pm Carmichael:

@dcpat: you think you're falling asleep? I'm in a 3 day IT seminar. Code, metadata, transcluding, and a bunch of other stupid ass shit that confuses me.
  4:51pm Cecile:

I was falling asleep just because I was falling asleep. Not used to not having a nap around lunchtime. Vacations get you spoiled.
  4:51pm northguineahills:

@ BSI: Ah... Bananas grimble grumble. Bueno Suerte!
  4:51pm Honey Water:

Jobs and the lack of them -- no end of misery however it hangs for the average joe.
  4:51pm Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: Oh noes! That stuff is brutal (really my prospects would go up so much if I could code, but I just can't write new code. Still, taking the courses has been beneficial--you can rip off existing code and beat it into your own ends :)

But yeah, not too many thrills in there...
  4:55pm Cheri Pi:

  5:00pm Matt from Springfield:

No. No. No.
  5:01pm Matt from Springfield:

E no.
  5:01pm Dr. No:

  5:03pm Honey Water:

Teatro refs abound today.
  5:03pm Cecile:

ha! I just got this today. It's great.
  5:06pm Cecile:

Is it pronounced COE-ven or CUH-ven?
  5:07pm Chris from DC:

I've always heard cuh-ven
  5:08pm still b/p:

Have to check in Wiccapedia.
  5:08pm WRECKEDUMB:

@cecile. what movie was that from Salt Lake City Punks? lol. Singer sounds like King Diamond
  5:08pm Cecile:

it's an American Movie joke.

"Why would you pronounce it cuh-ven? It sounds like 'oven'!"
  5:08pm WRECKEDUMB:

without all the falsetto of course
  5:08pm Matt from Springfield:

"Cuh-ven" was the band that took "One Tin Soldier" as a break from their heavy side. Is this the same band? I've only heard one of their heavier songs "Blood On The Snow", and it sounded more proggy.
  5:09pm WRECKEDUMB:

That's right American Movie. ha...
  5:09pm Cecile:

I saw Merciful Fate once. I laughed really heard.
  5:09pm Honey Water:

@s b/p: Where there's an entry for Scientology no doubt.
  5:11pm WRECKEDUMB:

i saw King Diamond once and did the same thing. Once when I ws in 7th grade religion class my teacher took my first Mercyful Fate album cover from me cause i was showing the dude next to me the pic of King inside the upside down cross. I went up to her after class and asked for my cover back and she said "No!!!!". Bitch, hope she burns at the stake.
  5:11pm Cecile:

  5:13pm Cecile:

wreckedumb, that was silly. Merciful Fate/King Diamond probably turned more kids off satanism because it looked so stupid.
  5:15pm Cecile:

black superman! Haven't heard this in any language in about 35 years.
  5:16pm WRECKEDUMB:

Their first album, Melissa, ruled and to a lesser extent their next, Don't Break the Oath. I kinda lost interest after that, but I saw King in the 90's at a club on Beale Street. Soon after I sold my original Mercyful Fate shirt on ebay for like $90
  5:16pm Matt from Springfield:

@Cecile: What was the original?! I thought this was an odd Thai-language ska tribute to M. Ali!
  5:17pm Cecile:

nope. I gotta look up the original.
  5:18pm Cecile:

Original was Johnny Wakelin and the Kinshasa band. Heard it a lot in AUS when it came out in 75/76.
  5:23pm Matt from Springfield:

#1 in Aus in fact. #7 in UK, #21 in US.
  5:24pm Matt from Springfield:

"After few further hits ("Africa Man", "You Turn Me On", "Dr. Frankenstein's Disco Party") his success cooled down."
  5:25pm Cecile:

I think I need to hear Dr. Frankenstein's Disco Party.
  5:26pm Cecile:

eh, it wasn't as weird as I hoped.
  5:29pm Cecile:

and it's under $30 for three discs!
  5:36pm Matt from Springfield:

8-bit compositions!!!
  5:42pm Brett:

I love that video game stuff
  5:42pm northguineahills:

This one of my favorite Roy Montgomery pop bands.
  5:44pm Honey Water:

Tailor made for our esteemed DJ it seems. Thanks for the spins and revelations today, BT! Later all!
  5:45pm Matt from Springfield:

Later, HW!
  5:47pm northguineahills:

New Roy Montgomery makes it back to back Montgomery guitar kiwi brilliance!
  5:53pm Matt from Springfield:

"Tone Poem" is beautiful! Is Roy a Kiwi?
  5:54pm northguineahills:

Yep, he's from somewhere on the South Island.
  5:56pm Matt from Springfield:

<3 NZ musicians, particularly South Island, particularly Dunedin!
  5:58pm Matt from Springfield:

All right, thanks Brian!
Peace out everyone!
