I never miscue a record. I am punctual, well-prepared, and dislike clutter. Outgoing and helpful, I'm always appropriately dressed. I do not behave erratically and have excellent penmanship. My CD's never skip, and I am in good health. I like all the notes, in any order.

I have to slip in this comment before my boss gets back: Sounds good, Bryce!

Wait, maybe the boss is in Providence. Nobody communicates in this office. If so, then I can comment all day, and the boss can't stop me! That is not a promise, it is a threat.

  12:55pm J-Mar:

The orchestra I work for (in Nashville) is playing a new Terry Riley piece for electric violin at the Spring for Music Festival at Carnegie Hall in May. This is getting me super-stoked!
  12:55pm J. G. Someone:

Rife? Been there, done that.
  12:56pm BSI:

  1:09pm stubot:

cant get in to "music" that sounds like I ran over a shopping cart with my car and am dragging it for miles. Its shit like this in the middle of the afternoon that makes most people turn off wfmu, its a good thing it's listener supported, otherwise shit like this would tank it.
  1:10pm Marmalade Kitty:

Terry Riley was 10 years old in 1945
  1:11pm stubot:

a show that focuses on tracks like this (can not call it music), should be on at 3am.
  1:11pm Listener:

I'm a listener and contributor, and I support this music.

I wouldn't want it 24/7, but a few hours "hear" and there is a good part of the overall mix.
  1:12pm Mr Donut:

Check out z100. I hear they play some pretty good popular music
  1:12pm Mugsy:

hey stubid-change stations, see ya!
  1:12pm BSI:

Bird of Paradise was brilliant.
Screw 3am, i need this now.
  1:12pm Carmichael:

Pa-JOW! Made it to the big dance. Terry Riley, eh? <reaching for the big knob>
  1:12pm Mr Donut:

I am a supporter and I look forward to this show every week
  1:13pm northguineahills:

not quite "you're no good", or poppy nogood", but what was I saying?
  1:13pm Logical Suggestion:

If you're not in a mood for this now, or ever, listen to an archive of a show you like more, or are more in the mood for right now. "Own your agency", as the newagers say.
  1:13pm stubot:

good thing wfuv can be relied on to play MUSIC at any given hour. Hey listener- wanna hear bullshit like this? I will put marbles in a blender for you. I was making breakfast (at 1pm) and made a point to come here to the playlist and thrash this bullshit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm bryce:

hi, stubot! don't be mad -- no one can like everything on fmu all the time. if they did, we'd be doing something wrong!
  1:14pm Marmalade Kitty:

  1:14pm stubot:

fuck z100, I dont think that station even exists anymore- this terry oreally is not music.
  1:15pm Logical Suggestion:

@stubot: Opinions are like...
  1:15pm Mr Donut:

FUV! That explains a lot.
  1:16pm gkm:

nice to hear you again from the other side
  1:17pm stubot:

BRYCE- I know youre a long time DJ here, and I really do appreciate your work, and everyone at fmu- but seriously- sometimes I hear a track on fmu in my car that really makes me stop and turn it off just to see that its not my car self destructing- and mr donut- FUV is a great station, its my backup for FMU when I hear tracks that sound like broken machinery
  1:17pm Carmichael:

My next CD release will be called Breakfast at 1 PM.
  1:17pm fred:

hi everybody
I absolutely love this track (you're no good), it gets better as it goes on. I wish I could find it...
  1:17pm northguineahills:

"You're no good" was always a good track to segue b/tn technoey/Pan Sonicey sets into R&B (then going into tape noise)
  1:18pm Unclear on the concept:

Bryce, I think something's wrong with the Cd player. This stuff keeps skipping.
  1:18pm Ike:

WFUV is strollercore. (Strollercore TM BT)
  1:18pm stubot:

tape noise? you seriously like listening to tape noise? Would be awesome to play noise music at a wedding.
  1:19pm Carmichael:

And my next band will be called the Marble Blenders.
  1:19pm Logical Suggestion:

WFUV: Easy Listening Freeform.
WLTW: Lite FM <---> WFUV: Lite FreeForm
  1:19pm Logical Suggestion:

My bad, I didn't know freeform radio aspired to status as a wedding DJ's set.
  1:19pm northguineahills:

Someone ripped this off of me while dj'ing 8 years ago. Still sad :(. I"ve had many recs stolen back in those days.
  1:19pm Carmichael:

Who was Fabio playing yesterday? Much of it was a needle stuck at the end of an LP.
  1:20pm Romney:

When I get in, all free form stations will be like FUV.
  1:20pm coelacanth:

iHAHAHAHAHA!!! wfuv is the 1 station i make fun of regularly!..A reference point for music made by people who mattered once who dont matter now,& bland non-artists that never mattered....Listened to by people who cared about music once but have got tired & boring & now just want pleasant background blandness.
  1:20pm northguineahills:

I have been specifically asked to dj tape noise at two weddings as a matter of a fact.
  1:20pm Ike:

I enjoy the sound of marbles in a blender.
  1:21pm northguineahills:

@Carmichael: that was Francisco Lopez
  1:21pm coelacanth:

oh,hi Bryce.
  1:22pm Logical Suggestion:

Look at this board. What a pot stirrer, that bryce.
  1:22pm Rick S-word:

When I get in, all radio stations will simulcast Vatican Radio 24/7.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm bryce:

thanks, stubot :)

i know a lot of the stuff i play feels unpleasant to some folks. and the last thing i ever would want to do is add negative vibes to anyone's day.

but i do trust myself and feel good about the stuff i play. the truth is, some folks are always digging something, while others aren't, so i have to just let go and follow what *i'm* feeling.

i really hope this show doesn't make you feel bad about the station as a whole. i would never ever want to work at a station that sounds all like stuff i play...
  1:22pm mike noble in dc:

i know someone who is trying to book brian turner to DJ their wedding. i hope there will be tape noise involved.
  1:22pm Carmichael:

Thanks. NGH. It's a drag getting old. I rather enjoyed that noise, despite the non 3 AM hour.
  1:23pm J-Mar:

So good!
  1:25pm stubot:

I dont like everything I hear on FUV- like I said, it's a backup for when the marbles in a blender band comes on. Go ahead and hate, but they play music. Some of it is actually really good music- and if you took your head out of your ass, you'd be able to hear that its NOT all old washed up shit- theres a lot of good stuff including a comprehensive covering of SXSW last week.
  1:25pm Marmalade Kitty:

who is she saying is no good? you or me..?
  1:25pm Ashok:

  1:25pm northguineahills:

speaking of old, I just hit the 2nd half of my 30s. The effects of the pre bday drinking are hitting me hard.
  1:26pm Mr Donut:

This needs that "I'm going to say it again" refrain
  1:26pm Carmichael:

Us, kitty. All of us.
  1:26pm Logical Suggestion:

The current "Nogood" track actually makes a good point about the similarities between the riley-ish "noise" stubot derides and the repetitive verse-chorus-verse-chorus-verse-chorus music he loves.
  1:27pm BSI:

I happen to dislike chocolate, but have yet to call up Hersheys & bitch at them about it. Group hug.
  1:27pm Marmalade Kitty:

party on, ngh!! ;)
  1:27pm still b/p:

If Marble Blenders is taken and anyone is going for Broken Machinery as a band name, I'd recommend Cross Beams Gone Owt Askew on Treadle instead.
  1:27pm northguineahills:

where is WFUV on the dial? I'm not familiar. I rarely get on the radio here in NYC besides WFMU and a few others. always up for new sounds.
  1:29pm Parq:

NGH, we've tried to warn you about the dangers of being a middle-aged drunk without adequate prepapration. Stop by Desmond's on Park Ave South any Friday afternoon to seek mentoring.
BSI, exactly. Way better than I could have said it.
  1:29pm Logical Suggestion:

It's the Fordhum University college station
  1:29pm stubot:

90.7 fm and is online in a big way too, like FMU.
  1:29pm northguineahills:

dak dak Marmalade Kitty!

(The only Icelandic I can remember)
  1:29pm Mr Donut:

It's near the Bronx zoo
  1:30pm Qft:

Yer no good! What great Riley! Great show, Messr Bryce!
  1:30pm coelacanth:

Good point,BSI...I've yet to call up wfuv to call their predictable programming "shit".
  1:30pm what's the use:

ok, Pandit Pran Nath now... live 1969 with Riley and Zazeela and YOung playing "back up". I'll wait.
  1:31pm northguineahills:

Cool, new airwaves to check out!
  1:31pm jk:

is there an echo in here
  1:31pm Sherlock Homey:

Elementary, my dear Watson. This chap calling himself "stubot" is either a WFUV DJ, or knows one rather well.
  1:31pm Ike:

@Stubot@1:25 -- there's some decent stuff on the Alt Side channel (and Alisa Ali has a foxy voice), and it's all "songs" and no "blender noise," but the main FUV channel is a snooze IMHO.
  1:32pm Mr Donut:

Yes good call BSI
  1:32pm northguineahills:

If every one liked what I liked, it would be a boring world. It's good to have different tastes aesthetics.....
  1:33pm stubot:

that being said- I prefer FMU most always. FUV doesnt have the soul of FMU. And seriously guys, how can anyone who hates FUV have a valid opinion if they dont listen to it? I love FMU, and yea, when I hear noise, it pisses me off and I change the station immediately. I can listen to a lot of crap most people would kill themselves if they heard, but I have my own personal line.
1:33pm Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band Purple Modal St:

I do weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, birthdays...
  1:34pm mike noble in dc:

maybe fuv should take wfmu's place on on the SOUNDTRAP
  1:34pm northguineahills:

I'm going to check up FUV after Kurt's show. (not fond of the one after). Which shows should I chek out?
  1:35pm northguineahills:

It is sad, I've lived here for 12 years, and rarely spin the dial.
  1:35pm bruceleh:

Let your freak flag fly, baby!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm bryce:

yup, it's all good! that's what i love about fmu so much....the overarching love of music (and sometimes "music"). there's a lot of love around here between people that are into totally different kinds of stuff. it's the golden thread that cinches this place together
  1:35pm stubot:

No, I am personal friends with quite a few FMU DJs, and am really active- visit the station quite a lot, remotes too, and have contributed to the station for years, as well as my personal and professional time.
  1:35pm Ike:

@Stubot -- then that's what the Ichiban Rock & Soul web stream is for, isn't it? @NGH they're all pretty much the same. It's formatted.
  1:35pm nic:

awesome show
  1:35pm Cecile:

Bryce, you are awesome.
And Terry Riley is awesome.
  1:36pm Marmalade Kitty:

Bronx zoo?
a zoo within a zoo within a zoo..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm bryce:

hahaaaa, mike :)))
  1:37pm Qft:

Is it turtles all the way down?
  1:38pm Parq:

Look, I'm not sure there's anything to be gained by taking this debate seriously, but ...
Stubout, I've been listening to FMU for 33 years. There have been many shows over the years that play music I don't like, and when that has happened, I've turned off the station and listened to something else. I never have, and never would, contact the station and act like my personal tastes should have some sort of preemptive effect on their programming, or at all like my not liking a show and tuning it off is any big deal to begin with. One listener "lowering the boom" as you're now extravagantly attempting to do, is just self-importance.
  1:39pm what's the use:

Bryce, you'll be happy to know that I was recently in Rome and got a private tour of Scelsi's apartment. It was amazing! He created a foundation after his younger sister passed away. Her apartment is on the bottom floor & basement level and the basement now houses his musical archives. His apartment is on the top floor and he also had the roof terrace - 360 views of Rome. http://www.scelsi.it/
  1:39pm stubot:

I like the late night shows- Idiots delight - Vin Scelsa, one of the FMU founding father of sorts. Also been a fan of the World Cafe for years. @Ike- yea, I need to start listening to the web stream more, but I rarely listen to FMU on the computer except for at work.

And Parq- I just dont see how noise is music. Its not like being an old fart in the 60s calling rock music "noise", this is actual noise.
  1:40pm Cecile:

WOW. what's the use, that is so cool.
  1:41pm jk:

is there an echo in here?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm bryce:

no way! what was scelsi's pad like?
  1:41pm northguineahills:

So jealous, what's the use! I will add that to my itinerary when I'm in Rome. Good to know it's there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm bryce:

no way! what was scelsi's pad like?
  1:42pm coelacanth:

Yes.What Parq said, but 34 years...&,unfortunately am subject to wfuv for at least 5 hour/month for a few years now.
  1:42pm what's the use:

@Cecile - it was! Very inspiring. The apartment was basically as he'd left it. Matisse drawings casually hung on the wall, his instruments and books scattered around... a copy of his Salvador Dali painting (original was permanently loaned to a museum in Italy because the foundation can't afford the insurance). He was actually a Count, but he's apparently not so popular in Italy.
  1:43pm Italia:

Count No-Account!!!!
  1:44pm Carmichael:

I would love to be a Count. Or maybe an Earl.
  1:44pm Cecile:

That sounds like a dream.
  1:44pm Count Count:

Vun, Two, Thrree! Ah Ah Ah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm bryce:

why not so popular in italy?
  1:45pm Cecile:

Carm, I would settle for being lo-rent American noveau very riche.
  1:45pm Joe Voltage:

Hi Bryce. Diggin the the sounds. Don't ever feel you need to say sorry for playin what u wanna play. F that person. Heard some of last weeks show. Really great also.
  1:46pm Cecile:

Scelsi doesn't seq well after Benny Benassi, bryce. :D
  1:46pm Cecile:

who I also love, by the way.
  1:46pm stubot:

and to verify FUV's lame aspects, right now they are playing early Sheryl Crow... aint no FMU.

And Joe Voltage- fuck you too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm bryce:

nah, stubot's all right. that track just annoyed him.
  1:46pm what's the use:

@northguineahills, you can email the address on the foundation's site - http://www.scelsi.it/ - and they will set something up (for free). Their English isn't bad and they really just want to promote his music. They gave me a stack of their publications (unreadable unless you read Italian) and a CD of his music. It was just my wife and I and a woman who works there. The place overlooks the Roman Forum fer crissakes! not a bad pad to make music in!
  1:47pm Mr Donut:

stubot is like Yngwie Malmsteen criticizing J. Mascis: "He's playing all the wrong notes!"
  1:48pm Ike:

This TR track is real WFMU favorite over the years and a true classic. One of FMU's defining tracks IMHO.
  1:48pm kiemzi:

enjoying the show bryce! listening with one of your #1 fans... http://twitpic.com/909b3h
  1:49pm stubot:

Bryce- love your attitude. Sorry for my cranky non breakfast eating ass comments about your beloved noisy music. This is what makes FMU great- the home for homeless music in the world. Gotta take the good with the (my opinion) bad.
  1:49pm Hugo:

@Bryce: Any Rosenboom and Buchla?
  1:49pm what's the use:

@Bryce, I dunno why he isn't popular there. The gov't gives the foundation a few grand a year at best. His music may not be, um, accessible enough? Who knows. Moussolini ran him out of the country during the war cuz he was hosting Jewish composers. Eventually he returned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm bryce:

  1:49pm Cecile:

I found a good banh mi place in my food court. Some Vietnamese kids bought a regular sandwich place, but added banh mi. They kept the name - Wilbur's. So good.
  1:50pm G:

The FUV discussion could only block out the food discussion for so long.
  1:51pm Cecile:

and if you ask for extra hot peppers, they will put like a jalapeno and a half on there. they don't mess aruond.
  1:51pm what's the use:

"homeless music"?? Riley isn't homeless... far from it!
  1:51pm kata:

this is beautiful. the perfect salve for my friday morning..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm bryce:

speaking of the italian govt & music.....anyone ever find themselves with a copy of this?

  1:51pm Cecile:

I had to get it in there before the fabric of the board was shredded.
  1:52pm Cecile:

bryce, maybe ngh can pick you up a copy in Italy.
  1:53pm what's the use:

is Berlusconi's album called "Bunga Bunga"??
  1:53pm allan:

whoa cecile works in downtown saint paul. that bahn mi place is cool but they got no veg options. weird someone else is listening to wfmu in one of these buildings.

I'm about ready to bust out the door for some Nepalese food. So there you are.
  1:54pm northguineahills:

I just made yakisoba w/ Moroheiya noodles, a drop of egg, and some corn and lima beans. (sauteed w/ fish sauce and some smoked chinese peppers (can't read the packaging). Super yummy and spicey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm bryce:

  1:54pm Chas.:

I just put marbles in my blender and now someone owes me a new blender. Shouldn't the comments come with disclaimers?
I also just finished a day of teaching art to antsy teenagers, and this music is just what I needed: crazy, yet strangely relaxing. Thanks, Bryce. And thanks for the exciting board I just caught up on. Rare to see anything but love here. Keep kicking against the pricks.
  1:55pm kata:

I turned away from vegetarianism for good when I tried a Banh Mi with shredded pork. Lordy..
  1:56pm Carmichael:

I'm toughing it out for the next 20 minutes or so, Bryce, but my stomach's growling for Chana Masala.
  1:56pm northguineahills:

@Cecile: I'd love to, but I need a decent job before heading over as I spent all my money on my Iceland-Germany-Mexico trip last Nov-Dec.
  1:56pm what's the use:

bunga bunga explained: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bunga_bunga
  1:56pm jk:

yeah, it's been a long time since I heard anyone having the "is it art" debate. kind of refreshing that someone still cares.
  1:56pm Cecile:

yum yum yum to you both.

yes, I do, allan. We must be the only two people who are listening down here. Or at least I feel like that sometimes.

allan, you should ask them to put mock duck banh mi on there. All the Chinese places in the skyway offer it, they should have no trouble getting some
  1:57pm Cecile:

kata, this one place, Jasmine makes mock duck banh mi so good that this carnivore orders them as much as the meat ones.
  1:58pm kata:

I work just outside Portland Oregon, and there are two people in my office who are dedicated FMU listeners. Beyond bizzaro.
  1:59pm northguineahills:

@jk: I haven't heard that conversation since my undergrad years, and in the last dozen years in NYC, I don't believe I've heard it.
  1:59pm kata:

oh Cecile I would try that! I still do eat mock meats here and there. Gimme Lean veggie sausage especially.
  2:00pm northguineahills:

Trader Joe's veggie chorizo is better then the real thing, and I'm a carnivore (my fiance is a veggie)
  2:01pm Carmichael:

Chorizo! Now we're talking. I'll eat just about anything that's ground up and shoved into a casing.
  2:02pm Cecile:

Penzey's veggie base has replaced beef and chicken when I need that something something in my cooking. Not real salty, just extra tasty.

Carm, if you ever make it to Minneapolis, I will take you to the home of all that is holy and in casings, Kramarczuk's.
  2:02pm Chris from DC:

Ha, I was just going to mention that chorizo. I'm not a full time vegetarian either, but it's pretty good. Though not better than the amazing real thing at a very authentic taco joint I recently found.
  2:02pm BSI:

had to leave the group hug for lunch, & I come back to a classic food conversation. Clearly the universe has reset itself and all is well again.
  2:03pm allan:

seriously cecile, this town is a dork town, i feel like they'd have me committed if i had speakers instead of headphones. i miss that wilbur guy, he was a weirdo, had his goofy picture all over the skyway. ha!

soyrizo x 1000
mock duck x infinty
  2:03pm allan:

Kramarczuk's is super dope for meats in minneapolis
  2:05pm Cecile:

he was a nice guy, allan.
me and the lady who owns the St. Paul Coffee Shop are always having "oh, God, St. Paul is soooooo boring" conversations. I look forward to the Farmer's Market for some excitement.

  2:06pm northguineahills:

I had a job (that I worked for 4 years) where headphones weren't allowed. After the second week of my speakers on very low volume, I was given an exception. (I also stated that I wouldn't work w/o music).
  2:06pm Cecile:

Or I go to the food court and listen to the guys at Pino's scream at each other happily.
  2:07pm Cecile:

in my industry (and perhaps in west coast culture too), working with headphones on is the norm. It actually HELPS me work. I would literally wither away and die without them.

  2:27pm BSI:

They can have my office headphones when they pry 'em from my cold dead silent ear holes. Or something.
  2:27pm Philllip Glass:

  2:28pm bruceleh:

Yeah Bryce, play some Skin Graft or Scott Smallwood.
That'll clear out the room
  2:28pm northguineahills:

Well, every other job I had, it was the norm. However, working for the feds where I was the youngest employee by two decades (and I'm not young), they had a different outlook.
  2:29pm northguineahills:

There must be a reissue of Terry Riley because all of the WFMU DJs have been playing him.
  2:59pm steve:

  3:01pm G:

"aleph" was reissued Jan 31st, maybe there's something even more recent I haven't picked up on yet...
  3:01pm http://www.last.fm/user/johnnykevlar:

Oh man, that's so heavy.
  3:02pm Cecile:

I think we should celebrate people who have large bodies of work while they are still alive.
  9:54pm chris m.:

i'm kind of a big expert on music: i listen to everything from the beatles to the stones. but some things just aren't music and i have to draw the line somewhere.
  5:37pm Ken of Brooklyn:

@ Stubot, feeling compelled to write in after the fact. The vast majority of listeners who tune into Bryce's show rely on his instincts, insights and his idiosycrasies to constantly push their musical boundaries well past their personal comfort zone. There have been times when I have been turned off by something being played, but, upon further exploration and exposure, I allowed myself to shift gears and listen with a different perspective and intent of purpose. Much of the music deemed experimental and avant garde is meant to challenge the expected norms of contemporary sound, rarely does it sooth, entertain or comfort initially. I cannot count the times when something that irritated the hell out of me on first listen has slowly seeped into my musical canon, the seeds are planted, the irritation fades, I slowly open my ears to an alternative universe of music that broadens the scope of possibilities that I never ever considered before. Bryce has introduced me to so many artists ( Roland Kayn, Daniel Menche, Hermann Nitsch, the GRM musicians, Christina Kubisch, Eliane Radique, Henri Chopin, the list goes on and on and on, but the key to understanding what these musicians are doing is to try and meet them way more than half way, and Bryce's long format approaches allows for a truly deep study unthinkable on any variation of commercial based radio. We, as listeners, are very protective of FMU and especially of DJs such as Bryce, for they treat us to a monumental 3 hour sonic journey, sometimes more challenging that we might want, but ALWAYS & ULTIMATELY, essential educational listening.
