Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from October 11, 2011 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Dan Melchior und Das Menace  Live in the WFMU Studio   Favoriting Engineered By Mike Sin    Shepperton, England 's Dan Melchior emerged as a primitivist bile-fueled bard in the tradition of Skip James and Billy Childish (the latter of whom he has collaborated with, as well as being part of Holly Golightly's band). He eventually emigrated to the USA where he settled in to create a huge discography of releases solo and with NYC's great Broke Revue. These days he's relocated to North Carolina, and has continued to sidestep easily-pegged garage rock categorization to create some truly mutant sounds, irascible as ever with his Das Menace project and a new album "Catbirds and Cardinals" on Northern-Spy. More Chrome than countrified, Dan and Das Menace rip it up on Brian's show today! Lineup: Dan Melchior: vox, guitar, David Van Dokkum: drums, Tony Allman: bass. Songs today: Ride In a Van / Black Dog Barking / Bewildered and Wild / Town Feeling (Kevin Ayers cover) / (Interview). Please check out a webpage set up to help Dan and his lovely wife Letha foot medical costs for her treatments: melchiorfund.blogspot.com. Thanks Dan & DM and Mike! PLEASE NOTE: The archive stream here has some unfortunately glitchery. To Listen back to this session, I recommend downloading or streaming via the Free Music Archive! The session is here, but the final track, the Kevin Ayers cover, is here. Enjoy!    2:04:44 (Pop-up)

  3:18pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

such a great voice. as a young guy all I ever knew him for was that Blue Suede Shoes song. I always thought of him as a "one hit wonder". That's what classic rock radio does to an innocent mind.

SWEEEET! Disco Indian Jack and the Beanstalk remix! I remember that from the 365 Days Project.
  4:19pm bill:

Dirty Breed's scotch is always older than his groupies.
  4:23pm Matt from Springfield:

@bill: LOL, that can be a good or very bad thing, and beside the richest of rock royalty, you can expect that to be a very bad thing! I'm going to remember that one!
  4:23pm Matt from Springfield:

I remember this "Journey to the East"--love it.
  4:27pm Pat in Philadelphia:

This is such a great performance!

Hey Brian! Just letting you know that Dan, Glen, and I are listening in, watching Kojack with the sound off - great for washed out vignettes of old time NYC!
Love what you are playing that crazy South Rakkas!
  4:50pm Cheri Pi:

I saw a really funny shirt at our local Occupy the other day, it was a Shepherd Fairy style Sarah Palin and it said "NOPE"-made me chuckle yes it did.
  4:52pm BT:

Letha, I am looking for that Telly Savalas LP as we speak....
