Favoriting August 11, 2009: Mink DeVille tribute, with guests Ben Edmonds AND Ted Leo! Plus, the best Midnight Ticket Oasis ever.
Willy DeVille, leader of the band Mink DeVille and a critically acclaimed solo artist, died late last week of pancreatic cancer. While they wouldn't be considered a "punk" band today, Mink DeVille were regulars at CBGB in the early/mid-'70s, alongside the Ramones, Television and Talking Heads. Ben Edmonds, a former editor for Creem, signed the band to Capitol Records in 1976 and subsequently paired them with legendary producer/arranger Jack Nitzsche. Ben shares his memories of Willy and provides his unique perspective on how a soul-blues-roots-Latin band fit in -- and didn't -- with the dawn of the NYC punk rock scene.
PLUS, as if that weren't enough, the wonderful Ted Leo pops in to perform a heartfelt version of Mink DeVille's "Let Me Dream If I Want To."

  12:22am
randy in NC:

EFD- To continue from last week, I thought the live version Mitch Easter did of Gimme Gimme Good Lovin' was hotter than either his recorded version or the original IMHO...
  12:24am
KC:

  12:28am

This Bare Wires has to be on a top ten of the year list, right?
  1:02am
efd:

  1:11am
Danne D:

I bet a Funk family picnic would be a real blast :)
  1:15am
Danne D:

A band that plays both King Crimson and Grand Funk - pretty impressive range :)
  1:17am
Pete:

EFD;

You can get the Bare Wires record @

http://www.tictactotally.com/

Unfortunatly, only vinyl (this is starting to make me mad) It's 13 bucks which may be cheaper than emusic but at least you will have the record
  1:17am
MD:

Aw crap. RIP MINK. And I'm just tuning in. Couldya one more Mink D play? Thanks amililon !
  1:19am
MD:

Did you buy this Leroy Stevens at Dope Jams, any chance?
  1:22am
efd:

MD, it's the station's copy so I'm not sure where it came from - might have been sent as a promo.

maybe i'll spin one last MInk track to end the show.
  1:22am
Danne D:

That Leroy Stevens reminds of those old Rock Station contests where they'd mash up like 10 snippets of a song real fast and if you could name them all you'd win like $10,000
  1:41am
Rarus Avis:

Follow Wire with The Bachs?
  1:42am
Rarus Avis:

Or, Willy Nelson?
  1:43am
efd:

i was thinking miss kittin & the hacker
  1:47am
Rarus Avis:

Works for me. It's definitely your show. Thank you for good a good experience. Or, following Miss Kitten, Discrete Encounter. Ears just wandering.
  1:51am
MD:

Ah, so good of you to play more Mink (time permitting of course.. and unfortunately as these RIPs relentlessly teach, Time doth little permit..).
Now re: Leroy Stevens, I found that same scream record at Dope Jams over weekend, thought you were mining the same vein. (NB scream collectors, they had a few more copies in stock I believe..
  1:57am
Danne D:

Night, everyone. Another great show, EFD!
  1:58am
efd:

thanks Danne and all - this one was special. see you all next week.
