RevRab: any attempt to pinpoint a specific “start” for something as nebulous as “Prog Rock” is necessarily a bit arbitrary, but most Prog-oli gist tend to settle on The Nice as THE first, ancestral, Prog band. (So do a lot of prominent Prog musicians who date back to that period)

I have to be stuck up and caution about the term “guitar noodling.” The real deal about Prog is that where a lot of guitarists might do some “noodling”, Prog guitarists play some totally non-noodling, kick-ass guitar. That’s one of the main reasons they sold millions of records in the rock-guitar-crazy 1970’s.

But I return to the likes of Bavaria and Argento this time of the year most years, and admitttedly to diminishing returns. Soon, I'll prolly just enjoy the fillums for their soundtracks.

Funny how --just because ELP and King Crimson did seem to take themselves *very* seriously -- the entire prog landscape got whacked with the humorless meme.

I thought Kevin Ayers was just plain old eccentric. If I was lucky enough to own any of his records then I’d have to refuel them. ;) Love it!

Oh, I like this Kevin Ayers song; it's so... perfect for a TV clip in my mind. Like one of those Sesame Street interludes in crayon factories or something, all saturated celluloid.

@Jackie G: no that did not occur. 1st half of show was Todd with a pre-recorded backing track played over his ne w "Vortex" sound system. He played piano & sang to the tracks mostly stuff from side one of AWATS. 2nd half was the full band. I would later work for Chris Andersen, his FOH sound guy back then.
