RevRab: any attempt to pinpoint a specific “start” for something as nebulous as “Prog Rock” is necessarily a bit arbitrary, but most Prog-oli gist tend to settle on The Nice as THE first, ancestral, Prog band. (So do a lot of prominent Prog musicians who date back to that period)

I have to be stuck up and caution about the term “guitar noodling.” The real deal about Prog is that where a lot of guitarists might do some “noodling”, Prog guitarists play some totally non-noodling, kick-ass guitar. That’s one of the main reasons they sold millions of records in the rock-guitar-crazy 1970’s.

@dday: Rundgren is a key figure in the whole “very proggy but not quite Prog” category. He’s one of the “bridges” to later bands that blended Prog vibes into generally more “conventional” music (or music that was more “contemporary” at the time)

@P-90, no doubt. the point i meant to make, but i didn't type my comment properly, was that I listened to Hatfield and the North and Bruford, so I knew Dave Stewart, but I never knew about Egg. all the time wasted listening to ELP, could have been EGG.

From the reviews I've read lof the Crim documentary, it seems that Fripp started out liking the documentary filming process, but control freak that he is he got very annoyed as things progressed.

@Jackie G: no that did not occur. 1st half of show was Todd with a pre-recorded backing track played over his ne w "Vortex" sound system. He played piano & sang to the tracks mostly stuff from side one of AWATS. 2nd half was the full band. I would later work for Chris Andersen, his FOH sound guy back then.
