Hey Jett!

  3:20pm Danny in Poughkeepsie:

Hi Sheila great opening love it
  3:20pm WM:

TBH I think the lyrics and music of The Shangri-Las are more insightful and emotionally moving than what you are currently playing.

Keeping us warm and giving us shivers all at the same time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Michael 98145:

{ i could make a joke about hedge fund pirates becoming blues singers ... but i won't }
Avatar 3:22pm djsheilab:

WM—Yes, the Shangri Las' intention was to move emotions. Not so with this one! at least not in the same way.
  3:22pm WM:

Thanks for mentioning David Mamet's House of Games, a favorite film of mine.
  3:23pm Peter in SEA:

Early release Friday at the old Schoolhouse :-)! And now Sophisticated Sounds! :-)

Avatar 3:24pm Mike W:

it’s even longer! the killer edge of early-’00s pop style
Avatar 3:24pm slugluv1313:

reading the lyrics (again) -- recalling that these "mere words," strung together so beautifully, were what had me transfixed the first time i heard this (@Handy -- maybe on Mary Wing's show? i know it was here on WFMU!)
  3:25pm goat bruh:

I love you all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm LouV:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm JohnEBGood:

OK I got djsheila back. Peace 🎹
  3:30pm Jett:

Agnetha, who I happen to love a lot, just doesn't deliver it with the same emotion as Mary Weiss does. I'll stick to the Shangri-las version.
Avatar 3:31pm Mike W:

Geographic North’s releases all have a certain vibe about them, a life-improving vibe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm The Oscar:

One time I was out for dinner with a group of friends (all past and present record store clerks), and this moody semi-spoken piece was playing, and we were all going crazy trying to figure out what it was-- it sounded like Bat For Lashes, but more creepy and dissonant. Eventually we realized we were hearing two songs at once: "Past Present and Future" by the Shangri Las playing in the dining room, and "Black Hole" by Beck spilling out of the kitchen. It worked so well!
Avatar 3:32pm djsheilab:

Mike W—I don't think I've heard their other releases. But I'm a big fan of Carmen Villain. She went from dream-pop to full on ambient.
Avatar 3:32pm djsheilab:

The Oscar—Love this story!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm dreamyandseedy:

70 degrees and sunny in central Texas but the music is still a mood :)
  3:33pm WM:

Shelia: Might be interesting to do an entire show of songs featuring narration or sprechgesang (speech singing). That could include Patti Smith, Nico, Marianne Faithful and many others.
  3:34pm Russt44:

Prefab opening was magical. Still in that space.
  3:34pm seedfriend:

Hey ya friends! Great to catch the show a little bit earlier for me- not tail ending today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Hughie Considine:

Fred Schneider is a master of the sprechegesang art.

Avatar 4:56pm slugluv1313:

omg -- i *thought* i recognized Rhiannon Giddens! totally making St. James Infirmary Blues her OWN!
years ago saw Carolina Chocolate Drops at Central Park's Summerstage -- a VERY pregnant Ms. Giddens was belting 'em out on that hot, humid afternoon, putting us all to shame with her ENERGY . . . and a few years back, tuned in to WQXR's Saturday afternoon opera broadcast (which my Mom listened to religiously) -- not only had i stumbled upon "Akhnaten" but also Ms. Giddens hosting Aria Code . . . Rhiannon Giddens also led me to the stunning music of Leyla McCalla :)

Big Thanks to Sheila from Vienna!
Used to listen to SBB every Fridaynight at work in the restaurant.
It's the only thing me and the Markus the waiter could agree on, haha
  5:05pm WM:

I know you have encyclopedic knowledge of girl pop, but have you ever heard Mary McCalisn’s version of You Keep Me Hangin’ On? (Recorded 1969.) It’s one of the most distinctive versions of that much recorded song I’ve ever heard.
  5:05pm Jett:

You R da Bomb! ❤️
  5:05pm Joe McG:

Great idea, Sheila!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Handy Haversack:

Sheila, a Negroni variant we're gonna try tonight or tomorrow: the Vendome: equal parts gin, sweet vermouth, and Dubonnet, which is cheap-ish and easy-ish to acquire.

If you don't have that, we're enjoying a Bronx right now: 2 oz. gin, .25 sweet verm, .25 dry verm., 1 oz. OJ, dash orange bitters (if you have 'em). Shake, strain, kick back mainland style!

I could send you Kate's version of "St. James" if you do the whole show, Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Michael 98145:

Ooh. We need to re-watch those great Fellini films.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm listener james from westwood:

Quite probably enough for 3 hours! Might be more men in that mix than can fit in a SBB ep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm Handy Haversack:

Shoot, sorry, Vendome is *dry* vermouth. Eq. parts gin, dry vermouth, and Dubonnet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm listener 126464:

Dubonnet! Nice, Handy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm Rob Kopp:

Have a look in Arnold Rypens' Originals book that I know you have, Sheila (under Saint). Enough for 3 hours of St. James Infirmary.

Avatar 5:21pm Undead83:

Oh sure ^^ @michael z This is Peter Gordon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm G:

sorry, not at michael z, at Brian. Youze folks type so much lol
Avatar 5:22pm djsheilab:

Here's the scoop!

Justine and the Victorian Punks was a collaboration between Justine, AKA Colette, a French-Tunisian performance artist living in New York, and Peter Gordon's Love of Life Orchestra, a stylistically omnivorous, pop-loving ensemble of avant-garde musicians. Gordon hung out with Beefheart in LA, met Harry Partch through his father, and had his mind blown open by Terry Riley; settling in New York in 1975, he met Arthur Russell and Rhys Chatham and proceeded to immerse himself in the downtown scene surrounding the Kitchen, an experimental performance space where Russell was musical director.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm northguineahills:

βrian:I'm sans car, and the nearest Jamaican restaurant, is about 25 km away. But, yes, except for anyone else w/in 100 km from the Gulf coast

@wenzo: I'm an omnivore, but there used to be a place in Bed-Stuy that had the best vegan curried goat. (also like the meat version).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm northguineahills:

All of our NYC/NJ/CT peeps are close to Jamaica (Queens, that is). Which ironically has a huge Jamaican immigrant population.....
  5:25pm michael z:

I remember seeing Peter Gordon and Arthur Russell at the Kitchen. Tim Lawrence's Hold On to Your Dreams: Arthur Russell and the Downtown Music Scene, 1973-1992 is a great book about the era.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm northguineahills:

@slugluv1313: Yes, I first heard Mary McCaslin's version of YKMHO late at night on the old WNEW when I was a teen ager. I forgot her name, but I clearly remembered her voice over the years. It took me a long time to rediscover her name and rendition.
