good morning!

Bobby Kennedy gave that speech that the Pidge used at the end of the show in Indianapolis the night after MLK Jr's assassination. It was the only major city in the US to not have riots.

There a great doc called, "King in the Wilderness", based on King's last few years. I believe it's on HBO Max.

"the Negro’s great stumbling block to freedom is the white moderate who constantly says ‘I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action,...who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man’s freedom.

Avatar 9:07am northguineahills:

Been watching a lot of Korean cinema lately. I can get a few words now....
Avatar 9:08am Joe McG:

Good morning, everyone, and welcome to the show. Thanks for joining me today. Happy MLK Day! @Brian: Counting the hours here, too! @ngh: I saw a doc about James Brown that suggested he also prevented riots in Boston, but my memory is hazy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am David (in London):

Brian, ah, yes, good plan. What we really need now for our collective spirits is some really shitty weather. Sigh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am mariano:

Son of Pantz: Exactly. "Why don't you protest peacefully?" OK, let's take a knee during the national anthem. "Oh, that's so disrespectful!" and so on and so forth. Or else it's "I agree with the goals, but there are some 'bad actors' in charge of [BLM/CORE/SNCC/NAACP], they're all communists, you know..."

Oh, pshaw, David! ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am The Oscar:

Good morning Joe McG and fellow hipsters! Hope everyone is well!

  9:11am Tommy G Live:

@The Oscar Where can I watch the documentary?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Guido from Cologne:

Hello everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am mariano:

Here in New Orleans they're beginning the long-overdue task of renaming streets that were renamed in the early 20th century after Confederate figures. The chatter on NextDoor is the usual: "This is not the right time! Crime is out of control! Our infrastructure is in bad need of repair!" In other words: fix all of society's ills for good, then we can talk about renaming streets. But of course, "It has nothing to do with race!" None of this shit ever has anything to do with race. Especially when it has to do with race.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Stanley:

Lovely Trees. Going to have to buy their albums, one of these days.
Avatar 9:15am northguineahills:

I used to have this Trees (Original). I lent it to someone and never got it back (so, I kept the records she lent me)
Avatar 9:15am Andrew in Toronto:

Good morning Joe and everybody else.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am The Oscar:

@Tommy I believe it's available on demand as of last Friday. Here's my review from NYFF, if anyone's interested: bostonhassle.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Webhamster Henry:

Hi Joe and Surface Noise enjoyers!
Avatar 9:17am Joe McG:

@Brian: I know, I'm feeling sick over it! I better stop saluting groups who have any member over 60.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Son Of Pantz:

@mariano what we are seeing in Trump's GOP (not all GOP, mind you) is the last death throws of white supremacy in America. It's going to be a painful transition for many, but I believe it is inevitable, and so do a lot of set-in-their ways white folk, which scares the shit out of them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Marley P. Dogg:

50 hours to go!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am David (in London):

I'm just putting on my doublet and hose in order to appreciate this properly.

Afternoon Webhamster.
  9:18am Rick A.:

On Friday John Allen played the Sally Free and Easy, an epic track, happy MLK day, Joe, relaxing music for a tense 2021.
Avatar 9:20am northguineahills:

@Rick: Flying Saucer Attack does a great cover of "Sally Free and Easy".
Avatar 9:21am Joe McG:

@Rick: That's where I found out she died.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am mariano:

Hey nonny no, David ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am David (in London):

I'm getting a hint of Funkadelic's 'Hit It & Quit It' in that riff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Baja Joe:

Hey Joe! I'm a Zep head, so I am loving this tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am JG:

My favorite Zeppelin song! Great version. On the original its the eerie church organ and the steel pedal guitar. great song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am JG:

Speaking of eerie church organs...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am The Oscar:

I've heard this one on a couple of shows, and "I work in service too" gets me every time.
Avatar 9:32am Joe McG:

Hola, Sheila! Thank ye, starting gentle again today. Can't seem to rev up these days!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am YETI BOB:

gentle is perfect
  9:36am Terr DE:

Sounded like Stones from their Moonlight Mile,Wild Horses era
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am The Oscar:

For some reason I can never keep straight in my mind whether "To Know Him Is to Love Him" is about Jesus or not. I think my verdict is "probably not, but it would be funny if it was."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am YETI BOB:

The Oscar: Phil Spector's father was a suicide. And on his tombstone were the words "To know him is to love him". That explains a lot about this song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am mariano:

The Oscar: The really cringey one is "He Touched Me."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am nortonjutland:

good morning Joe. you're killing it good this morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am The Oscar:

@Yeti/Joe Huh-- I had no idea!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am YETI BOB:

It does sound borderline religious
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Brian in UK:

You have to disassociate the person from the artist. I still find Bill Cosby's monologues funny even though he is vile.
  9:41am Terr DE:

Phil won't be missed here. Sure Leader of the Pack is fun, but he ruined All Things Must Pass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Krys O.:

YES!!!!
Avatar 9:48am Joe McG:

@Brian: I agree. I'll always enjoy Phil Spector's productions even if he wasn't such a good guy. I don't even mind his fingerprints on the Lennon and Harrison records, Terr. "What Is Life" has that Spector wallop to it that it wouldn't have had otherwise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am YETI BOB:

@Brian: I agree in principle but that separation is easier to make in some cases than others - it's complicated.
  9:51am The Butterman:

What if I love their vile acts but hate their art? P.s., I don’t love their acts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Webhamster Henry:

UnSoundWalled versions sound good too.
  9:52am TVP:

Fun fact: the lead singer of The Teddy Bears would go on to co-write Gonna Fly Now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am JG:

Agree on Spector. You don't necessarily want to celebrate the guy because he was such a dirtbag. But you wanna hear the music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Mr. Pumpy:

Good morning, Joe and all! Great tunes, Joe. Thanks!
  9:54am chris r:

happy birthday phil spector!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am 5Steve from Dunwoody:

Re: Phil. There is always Spike Jones' Serenade To A Jerk.
Avatar 9:55am Joe McG:

I will say that Ken's Phil Spector black velvet painting is one of my all-time faves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am The Oscar:

I saw one headline that described Spector as "talented but flawed," and someone pointed out that that manages to undersell both aspects of his career.
  9:56am djsheilab:

This is fantastic! What a find!
  9:56am chris r:

didnt know it was Phil's birthday today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Mr. Pumpy:

I'm loving this version already. I love it no matter where it may go! Off a cliff...fine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am YETI BOB:

Otis Redding was only 26 when he died - so young (I just learned)
  9:56am Erin in TO:

Is it wrong of me to think this song just doesn't sound right without the sax?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am David (in London):

Hey Mr P.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am The Oscar:

This Careless Whisper is INCREDIBLE!
  9:57am Jesse G:

Dang. This is a jam
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Mr. Pumpy:

David! How goes it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am David (in London):

Liking this version, too. Nice understated guitar in the background.
Avatar 9:58am Joe McG:

@Erin: I'm thinking it's a little refreshing without it! I'd like to hear it on more instruments, like maybe flute, accordion, or vibes! :)
  9:58am J&E in Ithaca NY:

So much better than the Paul Mauriat arrangement, loving this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Mr. Pumpy:

This version is wrapped in gauze and glazed with petroleum jelly. That's the sound...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am JG:

Keep the organ thing goin, Joe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am The Oscar:

Ever since the Seven Second Delay show at the beginning of the pandemic, "Careless Whisper" is my go-to handwashing song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am YETI BOB:

sounds like a B3
  9:59am Blix:

This is good. Finds the soulful jazz in an original that tends more towards Adult Soft jazz.
Avatar 9:59am herb.nyc:

"Back to mono" box- I just retrieved my copy. Thx for reminder, joe. (Mine is missing #4, via Archive of Contemptible Music sale. $20? 3 yrs ago? I assume online cost is high now) — that Stevie Wonder tribute to MLK Jr made me smile. Fook da racists.
Avatar 9:59am Rich in Bristol:

Wow, this version may have finally turned me into a Careless Whisper believer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am David (in London):

It's calling out for a trombone solo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Mr. Pumpy:

Not to mention the keyboard is stilted, lazy, slightly behind the beat. To reiterate, me likey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Mr. Pumpy:

VAMP!
  10:01am chris r:

today...tomorrow...and then???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Mr. Pumpy:

Alas, David, it ends devoid of trombone. The horror!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am pierogie:

It's early yet, but this is the greatest song I've heard this year.
  10:08am Rick A.:

Four years ago life was very melancholy. On a personal level, my wife was driving me to the airport to sort my late mother's remains. We were listening to Joe's MLK Day set, which included Gill Scott Heron's "Winter in America" which was very appropriate then. Listening to Joe's show somehow softened the sadness at the time. We are not out of the stress and melancholy yet though we are in a much better place than we were then. Joe has provided the rich soundtrack to all of it, thank you!!
  10:09am chris r:

Rick A. what was your sadness form?
  10:10am Rick A.:

My mom had died three months earlier and I was having to sort out her life. Incidentally, I don't have much of an ass either. It's everything else that seems to be growing.
Avatar 10:10am Joe McG:

@Rick A: Thanks for that nice memory, Rick. Glad I could be there.

David...One nation, under man-boobs.
Avatar 10:13am Joe McG:

I'm feeling much more optimistic right now than I have in a long time.
  10:13am Rick A.:

I am curious at the reasoning behind the title of this song. I'm guessing it's a focus on the film over the novel. Either way, what's the connection? Maybe the band just likes the name?
  10:13am chris r:

i think if Dr. King were alive today he would be sad

There is an amusing story of Arthur Lee at WFMU. I'm not sure the year he came to the station. However, with all of the staff watching expectedly, he sat a piano, played a few riffs and then rolled a joint. His genius was mixed with eccentricity.
Avatar 10:57am Joe McG:

Avatar 11:24am Joe McG:

I'm not a big fan of Billy Joel, but I was recently watching old episodes of my favorite sit-com "Taxi" on DVD and they stripped out "Vienna" from the episode where Alex and Elaine go to Europe, effectively destroying the mood of the episode. It's the only time in my life I was sorry Billy Joel wasn't there.
