Kate's STILL mad at me 21+ years later for not going with this awesome Turkish scholar and activist in the Kurdish oppression who was really into me. But I had already fallen for Kate and was waiting for her to lose her loser BF. But Asja was a super, super cool person who taught me a ton about what was going on with the Kurds.

slugluv1313:

was reading earlier that in addition to the Solstice (which some sources state is tomorrow, June 21st?), there are a boatload of planets in retrograde -- Venus, Mercury, Saturn, Jupiter, and Pluto -- and on Monday evening, Neptune retrogrades: "leaves us floating in a haze, which is pleasant in a hammock, and tough when we''re trying to accomplish anything new." -- oh joy! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm
mariano:

Handy: Yeah it was a real event in the house (and NOLA in general) when it came out. Oh, and when my mom was JKT's student, Walker Percy's daughter was her roommate at Dominican College (now part of Loyola).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm
Handy Haversack:

Mariano, I may have mentioned that my dad was a waiter? The dean of women and English at Agnes Scott College (in Atlanta) would always bring the Southern writing stars (Walker Percy, Eudora Welty, etc.) to his restaurant for dinner since she knew he could talk lit with them. She ended up teaching a class at my high school, and it was the one time my dad was like, "I don't like to tell you what to do much, but if you don't take her class, we're going to have to talk about why."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm
mariano:

Haha! I'm afraid that's as thick or fascinating as the plot gets. They assigned dorm rooms by last name at Dominican. Still, I always envied my mom's being college-age in New Orleans in the 60s. Oh, and she lived for a bit in the same French Quarter apartment building as Jim Garrison (aka Kevin Costner in JFK).

Oh wow, Handy, that's cool! You should write a bio of your dad, sounds like a fascinating guy. Eudora Welty was the writer in residence at Sewanee, where I went my freshman year. Never saw her though, but as you can guess Sewanee English classes were full of O'Connor, Faulkner, the Percys, etc.
Avatar 8:49pm
slugluv1313:

@ Handy -- yes! you have all these cool Dad stories -- have you ever considered writing about him?
@ mariano -- again, feeling clueless! i had no idea that Toole was barely into his 30s when he committed suicide -- and he was a huge fan of Flannery O'Connor too :)
i am intrigued by The Neon Bible, will get that too when the library can do inter-library loans
