slugluv it was pure luck for me. looking through the reggae section at alwilk's in elizabeth and all the records were 7-8 bucks -which was a lot in the early 80s!. LKJ in DUB was less, as was a toots album, so i bought them!

Nick Name:

Hello Dean: agreed / Hubig Pie
Avatar 1:51am
Motis:

@Dean: I couldn't agree more. . . Hillage breathes some very rare air.

Back in the early '80s I was kind of L.A. punk rock royalty, and I used to confuse and dismay li'l mohawk kids who looked up to me by playing stuff like Gong at them, and Soft Machine, and Van Der Graaf Generator, Holdsworth, Fred Frith, etc.
  1:59am
Dean:

Hey, Motis, I was by no means royalty, but I was involved in the '70s punk scene to some extent. Worked for a while on Flipside in the old days. Saw Hillage in Anaheim(!). He opened for ELO.
Avatar 2:02am
Motis:

Get out o' town! You worked at FLIPSIDE with Al and Hudley?

I bet we've met. They used to call me OSKAR MIRE back then. I was besties with Black Randy, and hung out with Geza X a lot as well. . . I lived/worked at the CASH Club, next to the original Zero Club on Cahuenga, in the Padre Apartments. . . I was the groom in a mock wedding there one, NBC came and filmed it. Rob Graves was the minister, and UXA played.
  2:05am
Dean:

Yep. I was there very early on, issues 2 through maybe 12. I typeset those issues in my bedroom using my mom's old typewriter. The gang at the time was Larry (Steve), X-8, (Tory) George, Al, Pat (Pooch), and me. Pre-Hudley.
Avatar 2:06am
Motis:

You had to have come to the CASH Club at some point, no? Janet Cunningham's place?
  2:08am
Dean:

Nope. I didn't spend much time with the scene. But I'm in Brendan's book a couple times.
Avatar 2:09am
Motis:

I loved Brendan; he was a prince. We had reconnected and were talking about doing some lit stuff together when he very suddenly and unexpectedly died.
  2:09am
Dean:

This was the beauty of the LA punk scene. You could be *anybody* and at the same time be in some way integral to what was going on. I loved it.
  2:10am
Dean:

Brendan once introduced one of my bands at the Masque as "the ultimate in embarrassment rock," and he was right!
Avatar 2:10am
Motis:

So true. . . you just had to get out there and DO SOMETHING.

On the other hand, all our friends have been dead for a long time now.
  2:13am
Dean:

Yeah, well, some are gone, but many not. I rode daily into LA with Lois, Terry Graham's ex at the time. Pat Bag worked at a department store perfume counter in the town where I lived, Whittier. My buddies and I are still kicking.
  2:14am
Dean:

My band M was *the first* band to record on Flipside Records. We did it at my house, the garage, on a rainy day when Alex Ferguson of ATV was supposed to show up. He was staying with photographer Pete, but chose to sleep in.
Avatar 2:16am
Motis:

You're lucky.

I NEVER expected to hit 30, the way I was living back then. . . but here I am a fat old man!

Black Randy didn't even make it out of the '80s alive. He and his wife Leslie got AIDS and both died within weeks of being diagnosed.

Photographer Pete. . . he got murdered, didn't he? Or am I thinking of someone else?
  2:18am
Fonz:

Happy daze!
Avatar 2:22am
Motis:

Peter Haskell? Bruce Kalberg of NOMAG killed him
  2:22am
Dean:

I sure hope not! I have no information about Pete.

I did expect to thrive, and this was in part because the LA scene showed me how one's seemingly random experiences could continue to motivate one to keep pushing along.

Now, heading toward 61 and with young kids, I still tap that energy. In its early years LA punk was a phenomenon.

Sally:

Great show Nick! And Motis and Dean, I'm loving hearing about your LA punk backgrounds, thank you.
Avatar 2:33am
Motis:

Thanks, Sally, I was a little worried we were monopolizing the chat. I know Station Manager Ken gets a little control-freaky about that sometimes.

Punk rock was so different back then. . . we had to make everything up as we went along; there were no templates.
  2:33am
Nick Name:

Hello Sally - agreed re Motis and Dean - thanks
  2:34am
Dean:

My sense is that SMK knows very well the therapeutic benefits of punk. Thanks, Nick and all. Fun times, then and now!
Avatar 2:35am
Motis:

And there were so FEW of us in the early days that anyone you saw on the street who had the look, you became instant friends with. . . so running into Dean here warms my tiny little charcoal bricquet of a heart.
Avatar 2:37am
Motis:

Dean, did you ever come hang out at the Oxford House? It was one of what they called the "Manor Houses," where if you were connected, you could show up pretty much anytime. Red Hot Chili Peppers started in the garage at the Oxford House; the Black Flag guys were there a lot, and it's where Henry Rollins crashed his first week in L.A.
Avatar 2:40am
Motis:

A lot of the TWISTED ROOTS people lived or hung out there as well. . . Maggie Ehrig -- the "chicken butt" girl from that Penelope Spheeris movie SUBURBIA -- lived there, and Paul Roessler from the SCREAMERS / 45 GRAVE, etc.
Avatar 2:42am
Motis:

Paul Roessler, by the way, is still alive and well. He produced for Josie Cotton back in the day, and she bought him a sweet recording studio with attached apartment where he lives and works to this day. . . I think he calls it KITTEN ROBOT STUDIOS, it's around 3rd and Beverly maybe?
Avatar 2:44am

Agreed, your conversation is great to read, guys.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50am
Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Nick. Great show. Been lurking somewhat this evening.
  2:51am
Dean:

I was way earlier than all that. RHCP and BF were latecomers to my mind. Never even saw the Spheeris movies, 'cuz they were beyond my purview. But the Screamers? Hell, yeah, they were among the top shows I've ever seen.
  2:52am
Dean:

Roessler was making appearances on Diane Kamikaze's show before she dropped from the WFMU schedule a couple years ago. He's doing great stuff.
Avatar 2:52am
Motis:

@Dean: He's always been a BRILLIANT musician.
Avatar 2:54am
Motis:

He was in Nina Hagen's band, too
  2:54am
Dean:

Yes, agreed. And the amazing thing about that LA scene was that you'd hear folks who clearly were not musicians doing impressive stuff right along side of folks like Roessler, who obviously have talent. I was, to put it mildly, among the former sort.
Avatar 2:55am
slugluv1313:

yes! fascinating to read!
& i know what you mean about "recognizing" each other back then -- walking home where i was in school, someone spotted me and yelled out, "I LOVE YOUR SLITS BUTTON!" -- and we have been friends ever since :)
  2:55am
Dean:

Wall of Voodoo invited my crappy band to play Madame Wong's or Hong Kong Cafe, I don't remember which, with Mau Maus. We broke up, instead.
Avatar 2:56am
Motis:

@Dean: Yeah! Because it wasn't strictly about music all by itself.

Frank Zappa never understood that; I met him at a punk show at the Whiskey; he was in disguise with this ridiculous rainbow afro wig and these giant weird sunglasses. . . but after checking it out, he dismissed us as "the Tinseltown Rebellion," because he wasn't able to understand that it wasn't strictly about music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57am
mariano:

Thanks Nick, thanks Skeleton Crew, take care everyone!
  2:58am
Dean:

That's remarkable, Motis. I would have expected Zappa to have gotten it. I remember once calling out Crusin' with Ruben and the Jets in a Flipside issue. Loved that record. Punk had an affinity for it, and vice versa.

Paul (Mars) (Black) from the Mau Maus is still alive; I haven't spoken to him in a few years now, but he had just finished his degree finally. He's another amazing musician from back when.

Amazingly, Rick Wilder was also still alive last time I looked, which again was three or four years ago. . . but even in 1979, we all figured he was going to keel overdose and die any second!
