Therese or anyone, I've searched in vain for the name of a early-mid 80s pop band with female vocals that had a French sounding double name starting with the letter T (Tres-Tres?) and phonetically pronounced tur-ray—tur-ray.you played it when you were on at midnight. it was a one hit wonder at the time with a very catchy repeated hook. I don't want to interrupt the flow of your show so will include my email here. Sorry, Im just at a loss.

Therese...that's a myth about Reagan and AIDS. He, in fact was quite gay-friendly even before his presidency. And in the early years of AIDS, had people behind the scenes working on the problem---increasing AIS funding (nearly quadrupling it in 1982), and working on legislation to speed up drug research and accessibility. Where the myth arises is in that he didn't publicly mention the disease until 1985, a political decision he'd made so as not to incense the fundamentalists.

When the HIV/AIDS epidemic began in the 1980s, the Reagan administration's first reaction was chilling: It appeared to treat the epidemic as a joke. audio of press conferences reveals Ronald Reagan's press secretary, Larry Speakes, and members of the media joking about the HIV/AIDS epidemic — which they called "gay plague" — and laughing about one of the reporters potentially having it.

"Ronald Reagan was completely indifferent to the fate of people with HIV and AIDS," said Sarah Schulman, an AIDS historian and English professor at the College of Staten Island.

Ronald Reagan, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease five years after he left the presidency, was actually suffering from the disease while he was in office Reagan's memory lapses and bouts of confusion in public, most visibly during the 1984 presidential debates and his 1990 Iran-Contra testimony. Incidents such as these led to speculation that he was undergoing a gradual mental decline that those around him didn’t want to admit.

WFMU is a freeform station kept running by asking for donations, eshewing the commerical enterprises that have eaten up most independent media outlets. That means the station, the DJs, are free to make whatever content they want, without fear of having sponsors pull their support.

Also, I do not know where you live, but the station is right across the river from Manhattan, and most of the DJs live in NYC. We are inundated by the effects of what is happening. It would be crazy to not address something that is effecting us all in a very tangible way.

Also, have you not been paying attention to the music that is being played? Like, all week? Do you like any black musicians?

I for one come to listen to WFMU as a way to decompress from obsessively checking the news, but not feel I'm taking part in some escapism that would be ignoring the very real issues going on right now, and the people who are laying their lives on the line for a better a life for ALL OF US.

Lesley Stahl was asking herself during a 1986 visit with a president she would later describe in her 2000 memoir, Reporting Live, as “shriveled” and verging on catatonic.

“Reagan didn’t seem to know who I was,” she wrote. “He gave me a distant look with those milky eyes and shook my hand weakly. Oh, my, he’s gonzo, I thought.” But a few minutes later, he snapped out of it and from that point on seemed perfectly fine. When asked, White House aides admitted to Stahl that they had witnessed similar episodes.

Reagan’s own son, Ron, sensed something was wrong at the time. He wrote in his 2011 book, My Father at 100: A Memoir, that he first became concerned that “something beyond mellowing” was afflicting his father three years into Reagan’s first term. Of the latter’s bumbling debate performance against Walter Mondale in 1984, the younger Reagan observed:

At 73, Ronald Reagan would be the oldest president ever re-elected. Some voters were beginning to imagine grandpa — who can never find his reading glasses — in charge of a bristling nuclear arsenal, and it was making them nervous. Worse, my father now seemed to be giving them legitimate reason for concern. My heart sank as he floundered his way through his responses, fumbling with his notes, uncharacteristically lost for words. He looked tired and bewildered.

I think Joe Biden is a very fine man he's been a senator since 1972 he's been the chairman of the Judiciary Committee and the Foreign Relations Committee and was left of center for quite a while before he was tainted by Washington... who knows if he becomes president he might return to his old ways!?!

I have never had a microwave. Every once in a while I have to use one at work, and I'm always totally clueless.

Spent the day inside but gaming with good friends. But have been sitting out back watching the sparrows with Kate and listening to Therese this past hour, and that sure is nice, too.

Hey, queems!

Billy:When the U.S. government’s official jobs report for May came out on Friday, it included a note at the bottom saying there had been a major “error” indicating that the unemployment rate likely should be higher than the widely reported 13.3 percent rate.
The special note said that if this “misclassification error” had not occurred, the “overall unemployment rate would have been about 3 percentage points higher than reported,” meaning the unemployment rate would be about 16.3 percent for May.

CC...one thjng I've learned recently, is that protesting the lockdown is dangerous, stupid and downright evil, while protesting racial injustice makes you immune to the virus. This, I've surmised by the media's disinterest in the lack of social distancing at the rallies of the past 10 days.
  7:47pm
JakeGould:

“Yeah, I heard that, too. Seems plausible.” I just came back from marching on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn and there were no terrorists in the crowd. More than a few WFMU commenters and DJs have protested and supported protestors as well.

The core point here is regardless of what you agree or disagree with, you shouldn’t tell someone who is doing work for you for free (like a DJ) what to do. That’s it.

You don’t have to pay to listen and you don’t have to pay to comment.

You cannot uplift others by debasing yourself. Self-hatred is a mental disorder, not proof of how much you care. It won’t make you a better person or save anybody else. It’s a tool for brainwashing, the stuff of cults. Never thought I would see/hear conformity being pushed at WFMU.
