Favoriting April 2, 2019: Andre Previn RIP
The RIPs keep coming. Morricone Island pays belated tribute to jazz and classical pianist, conductor and composer Andre Previn who died in Manhattan on February 28th at 89. Previn started his career in LA in 1946 as an arranger, conductor and composer for MGM while still in high school, eventually composing over 50 films before turning his nose to the world of film scoring after 1975's "Rollerball." However, his work on "Valley of the Dolls" never allowed him to shake his Hollywood past.

agreed, Linda Lee -- loved this song ever since i was a little kid (and way too young to *understand* what Valley of the Dolls was all about)

golly, they filmed 'the subterraneans'?
Avatar 7:06pm
Linda Lee:

i see they took a few liberties with the love interest..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm
dale:

there's a scene in rollerball where some people at a cocktail party go outside to blow stuff up with bazooka type armaments and they're all laughing and having a blast. it was telling.

@ least the tune's good...

Seems everybody quite liked the man Andre Previn as well as the music.

@Linda my sister and I did that with Altered States and Times Square a few years ago, it was fun. Both seemed kind of ridiculous, in different ways, but Times Square was more fun.

i'll bet! if they're dated, they just seem silly.

Damn, Dog! I saw that in the theater.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:25pm

@Linda both films have interesting backstories about conflicting visions and demands between screenwriters/directors/producers, and you can see it in the end results.
Avatar 7:26pm
Jeff Moore:

I've seen far too few of these – although I've gotten exposed to the music more than the films somehow.

@ Linda Lee -- right? re: Theme from The Valley of The Dolls -- still remains soooooo evocative of feeling lost, lonesome, etc. . . . when i finally saw the film, it was just so PERFECT for the story . . . (my Mom had the book too! but, i was not "allowed" to read that either until i was "older," hah! gotta dig that out too and read it again :) )
