Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am

Do the burned discs have stick-on labels? I've found that over time, the labels shrink and causes the disc to warp or 'dish', with the effect that it plays fine, at first, when the laser is tracking the inner tracks, but as it moves towards the edges it has a harder time focusing on the outer tracks where the warp has a greater impact. You think it's rot, but it's not. I have been able to fix a few just by gently flexing them, dunno if it stretched the label back or removed the warp, but the disc will often play again. But it's also easy to snap a disc if you are not careful or the plastic is particularly brittle.

I love this "basics of jazz improv". I play trombone in several bands as a hobby (a couple are jazz) but I'm not very good at improv. My son was the pianist in his high school jazz band a few years ago and got decent at comp'ing - I was so impressed!

@rev: Huh, it's almost like, at first, CDs were considered something special and rare that had only a limited appeal and were created with care and quality, and then later became a commodity to be produced as cheaply and quickly as possible with no regard to quality or longevity. I wonder how that happened?

@steveo Oh, I was talking about the composition—not any particular performance of it. I've now heard the Sunwatchers version twice. It's interesting that they felt confident enough to do a piece that had Pharaoh Sanders, Joe Henderson, Ron Carter, etc. on the original. That would have paralyzed me.
