Sun. 1/27/19 7:37am Former smoker outside a hospital door:

There was a time, over 20 yrs ago I was one of those smokers outside a hospital door. I was judged and murmured to by people walking in and walking by, ‘how could you do *that* in front of a cancer hospital?!’, ‘disgusting’, and the classic ‘Dont you know smoking is dangerous?!’

How could they know a family member was inside, dying of a bone marrow failure disease, and I only resorted to lighting up after months of seeing I couldn’t keep them alive with my bone marrow?

Or that one of the ‘smokers’ I got to know, who had the audacity to light up while attached to an IV, was a patient there for his fourth try of study drug chemo which wasn’t shrinking his brain tumor. When we first started chatting out there one day, he said he wasn’t expected to make it through the year (this was in August).

We may choose to start smoking; much harder to stop, particularly during the drawn out fight and struggle for life of a close family member. Or friend.

That Editors song, and album title, struck a chord for me... an end does have a start. See someone smoking outside a hospital door, consider what might have brought them to that end.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/27/19 7:58am fred:

@Former smoker outside a hospital door: I quit smoking before having heart surgery. The main reason I took it up is the judgmental/religious "support" I got in rehab. Listening is a lost art
Avatar Sun. 1/27/19 8:01am LynnsBrother:

Good morning, and thanx Carol for airing portions of the Isaac Asimov interview from 1988. That has some of my favorite Asimov ideas like the "bathroom metaphor", and a possible solution to over-population dilemma.
Sun. 1/27/19 8:03am Former smoker outside a hospital door:

@Fred, I can relate. Cigarettes, coffee, and that ‘support’ tend to replace the previous drugs of choice in those rehab rooms.

Glad you were able to quit smoking. I quit as well, twice, but hopeful this time sticks.

@Former smoker outside a hospital door: I didn't quit: the aforementioned behavior by "doctors" in rehab made me light up again in protest. Dumb but true

@Former smoker outside a hospital door: my bad, I wasn't clear about that. One more tidbit about rehab failure: I asked the in-house nutritionist about Katsuobushi (which I love). Her answer was "thanks for telling me about it, I'll ban it, it's not Christian". This shattered any faith I had about the place and I thought about that when leaving the hospital then smoked again
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 1/27/19 8:25am Ken From Hyde Park:

Time to hit the road. Thanks for the jingles this morning, Carol. I hope you got to see the eclipse last week. Someone noticed a meteor smack the moon during the event.
  Sun. 1/27/19 8:27am jeroen Kuster:

thank you Carol for a great show and Fred I see you soon
Sun. 1/27/19 8:31am Former smoker outside a hospital door:

@Fred, what a sad shame that must have been. Did she assume the Katsuobushi was Shinto? No wonder you were so put off.
I’ve had encounters with hospital workers whose religious beliefs (and lack of information/understanding of same) dictated how they did their job. Obviously not always a good thing.

I think that pay is so low that evangelists can fill the gaps, the opportunity to convert vulnerable people is worth something to them (then again, a JW nurse was really helpful, and totally not proselitizing)
