At the risk of social ostracism and with apologies to Fabio:

They're not mill towns anymore and unless they are stops on the antiquer's highway then most large towns in central New England are drug-riddled ghost towns. Pittsfield, Worcester, Springfield, Holyoke, Brattleboro, Watertown. I'm being anecdotal and maybe a bit facetious, but I stand by this. My family is still up there. I was up there last week.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 11/8/18 3:12pm The Oscar:

@crateslinger Having grown up in central Mass in the '80s/'90s, I can vouch for this and then some.
Avatar Thu. 11/8/18 3:12pm zpulpa:

I agree @crateslinger, though I hope that the future can bring a brighter life to that area. Strength through failure as they say..... maybe not funny

Fabio is on. Let the weekend begin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 11/8/18 3:15pm Ike:

Is that why White River Junction looked so sad the last time I passed through there? Was that a mill town too?
Avatar Thu. 11/8/18 3:15pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Crateslinger-you are describing most of the small towns along route 5/20 in NY. They have quaint looking downtowns but they are far far far away from being a cutesy cool downtown with lovely nice diners and cool cafes. They are just run-down places that are really kind of no fun whatsoever. Hackettstown NJ is a booming metropolis in comparison to these places. Everybody moved to the suburbs.
Avatar Thu. 11/8/18 3:17pm Chris from DC:

Nice segue.
  Thu. 11/8/18 3:17pm spodiodi:

heck yeah
Avatar Thu. 11/8/18 3:17pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

A Long, long, LONG time ago. It's not the 60's anymore, that was their heyday. Only College towns can make these successful, and even the area around University of Buffalo South is pretty much a failure. The Elmwood Strip near Buff State is thriving. That's about it for college-towny areas around Buffalo.

White River Junction still has a bit of life because of Dartmouth across the river, but yeah it's depressed. Upstate New York is a wasteland now, but i can't speak to the past.

Avatar Thu. 11/8/18 3:21pm crateslinger:

wish I could leave. I miss the woods. NYC was fun when I was a squatter kid throwing bottles at cops. Now it's just a college campus for every American town's most beautiful and gifted children and I'm just a lame old dad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 11/8/18 3:21pm Ike:

Was Kraftwerk inspired by this DW from 1970 that scared the hell out of kids across the UK, or was it just a coincidence? www.youtube.com...

@Crateslinger-kids are now getting apartments in Harlem as the last outpost of almost-affordable apartment in Manhattan. ALL of Manhattan is gentrified is my take on it. I am sure there are pockets of poverty in Manhattan, but I'll bet they are rapidly shrinking. Gentrification endgame I guess.
Avatar Thu. 11/8/18 3:24pm crateslinger:

You can't get a free standing single family home anywhere in the five boros for less that $500k. Maybe Staten Island. Maybe, and not for long.

It feels kind of odd and confusing to try and live in a city, being a recent art school grad with no real career prospects... Rev I have only ever lived in an America steeped in decline. I'm not old enough to have seen the start. I not too long ago listened to Jimmy Carter's "Crisis of Concise" speech and despite the oritentalist silliness, his forward thinking and dare I say genuine reflection and commenting on what he saw as a problem was so heart breaking to me. I fear it being more like the disintegration of the Balkan States, with richer, more industrious districts doing just OK but sort of isolated, and rural places becoming lawless, crumbling infrastructure, like something out of Children of Men meets Deliverance.

Avatar Thu. 11/8/18 4:28pm Fabio:

@ Polyus: Yes, I saw it and I felt the same way. It's not a "good" movie, with a lot of plot issues and things that just don't work. But I liked Tilda Swinton (always great) and the cinematography and sets and choreography were all excellent, but it left me cold in the end. The big dance satanic ritual scene towards the end was fantastic visually, with the exception of the "monster" demon witch or whatever that fat hideous thing was supoposed to be, but it wasn't scary or even creepy -- which is what you should be getting from Suspiria! and the political asides from radio and TV that were supposed to make some sort of connections -- to what exactly?) were basically useless...
